(as translated by Adele Harth, Interpreter/Transliterator in Accessibility Resource Center) is photographed for the #WeAreChico series Thursday, April 26, 2018 in Chico, Calif. "Going through another person to communicate with someone is a challenge. Before I came to the United States, I hadn't experienced working with an interpreter, so I've been trying to learn how to work with them to express what I think. American Sign Language is my third language, so trying to express clearly to interpreters and have them translate well to a hearing person is a challenge every day. If I didn't have an interpreter, I would miss everything in the classroom. My first language is Taiwanese Sign Language, second is Mandarin, third is American Sign Language and fourth is English. I became deaf when I was 2, and I grew up going to school mainstreamed with hearing kids. I never had an interpreter until I graduated with a BA in Taiwan and came to the United States. When I came here, I experienced people seeing me as if I'm the equal of a hearing person. They don't label me as deaf and therefore not equal, and sometimes I feel like it's too much praise for me. I don't think I'm all that great, because I'm still learning everything."
