This common year-round resident of the deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America is also found in older urban and suburban areas with mature trees and vegetation. The Tufted Titmouse's gray-crested head, rust-colored flanks, black forehead and large eyes make it easily identifiable, even for casual birders. It is a frequent visitor to bird feeders during fall and winter where individuals prefer sunflower seeds and suet, and often cache many of those seeds throughout their territories. This is an active bird, moving along branches, and often searching under them, for arthropods. It is also a vocal species, frequently uttering contact calls and chick-a-dee calls and, in spring and summer, singing its ‘peter-peter-peter' songs.

Tufted Titmice and chickadees are ‘nuclear' species, often joined in winter flocks by a variety of ‘satellite' species. As a ‘nuclear' species, titmice influence the paths that flocks follow, are aggressive mobbers of potential predators, and often take the lead during mobbing events. The calls that titmice utter when mobbing provide information about the presence of predators for heterospecifics as well as conspecifics

During the past 70 years, the range of this species has expanded northward into New England and southern Canada, with climatic warming likely the most important factor, but bird feeders also a factor. The northern distribution of titmice is likely limited by average minimum temperature rather than food availability.

I found this one in Lake Wales, Polk County, Florida.

This is the guy who chased off the juvenile Bald Eagle the other day.

One of our resident Blackbirds has turned a patio table into his private landing strip when arriving for a snack. Only he hasn't yet quiet mastered touching down on a glass top runway. Oh happy days ... :-))

A very beautiful resident bird prized by the photographers due to its beautiful plumage. The one here is a male, but the female is even far more colorful and beautiful. I sighted 2 males and a 3rd one which I could not determine the sex. We were exploring a new area and these birds just flew right from under our feet scaring us for a few moments. They circled around and landed at some distance away.

Outside of its breeding season it is quite hard to spot. Also, the bird times its presence to align with the sowing reason and the post harvest season when the fields are wet and muddy both the times. The bird has a preference to the wet areas where we find them pretty much.

I suspect the male was watching the chicks and hence was trying to distract us by flying away so quickly and openly. It was also flying at eye level height instead of the usual close to ground mode. The males in the species watch the chicks while the polyandrous females leave after the eggs are laid.

Well this was taken last week as a possible for SSC chairs /seats , but it did not get chosen . However , I took it so here it is .

The throne is a carved seat out of a bit of tree trunk and been in the garden now for quite a few years .

So it is not in the woods but just the pathway through the garden and it seems a popular place for the garden residents to gather !!

One of Slimbridge's resident robins seen on top of a fence outside the Peng Observatory on my last visit to the wetlands centre a week ago. Merry Christmas to all flickr members, have an enjoyable one!

" Taking off with a vole only to loose it moments later to the resident female Kestrel ! "

Outnumbering residents, the town of Hanksville, Utah has many vehicles, trailers and boats, often abandoned. This boat was once someone's pride and joy. For some reason, it was stranded in a forsaken trailer park. When I see something like this, I always wonder what the story is. Did the owner buy a new boat and leave the old one to die?

Resident birds of the subcontinent and found throughout the year, but not so common here. This was shot last winter near a dry lake on the outskirts of the city. That lake hosted 1000's of birds including a few species of ducks, godwits, swallows, stints, sandpipers and a variety of other waders. The place had amazing activity and was an excellent place for bird photography.

During one of those days, around 7-8 Spoonbills landed there and were foraging in the shallow lake scooping up the various aquatic creatures like worms, crustaceans, insects etc.. These spoonbills - I suspect - are locally migratory since their sightings are not that regular or predictable. And it is one of those large birds that many of us enjoying sighting and watching.

The box fell down last Autumn and obviously had had Barn Owls.

This year a new box put up in January, pigeons and squirrels had investigated but also this fellow. I have a bushnell trail cam pointed at the box . Lets hope the Tawny stays. Somerset, UK.

Watch this space.

We have resident Spruce Grouse in the woods on our property. We have named this handsome fellow Romeo. For the past two weeks, he has been out courting the Spruce Hens that live on our property and it has been quite entertaining to say the least.

Two nights ago, we came home from town and Romeo was on top of our truck's tonneau cover doing his mating ritual.

When doing his ritual, he spreads his feathers out like the image above, then moves them from side to side. After doing this a few times, he then will peck at the ground or in this case, a branch. His next move is to extend his wings out maybe an inch on each side and have the wingtips pointing towards the ground. He will then run towards the hen and if she is receptive, then he will mate. If not, she will fly off and Romeo will start all over again. Gotta love Romeo!

These Red Avadavats (also known as Strawberry finches) are in their peak breeding season. The males look superb - bright red with white spots on the body and are hard to miss. These are resident finches found throughout the year, but are in their breeding plumage from around june/july till December. Around 10 cms long, they can be seen around bushes and scrubs flying around. I don't think they started nesting yet, but thats due shortly after the rains end.

They nest in small dry bushes dotting the countryside and once the bush is selected, they start collecting nesting materials for the build. We came across a dozen of them on a visit to a grassland and all of them are in prime breeding plumage including the females. They haven't paired yet from what I can see and once that is done, I suppose the nest building begins.

The city of Kyiv, which in historical terms is a sacred city (it is not for nothing that when Mikhail Bulgakov mentioned Kyiv, he always wrote the word "city" with a capital letter), is not perceived as sacred in our everyday life, being simply a place of residence and work. But the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra has preserved a sacred aura for many centuries, similar to that of Jerusalem, Rome, and Mecca. And Kiev residents, if they come to the Lavra, visitors and modern tourists rush to perform an "act of worship" - take a selfie against the backdrop of churches.

Pica pica (Eurasian magpie / Urraca común)

The Eurasian magpie or common magpie (Pica pica) is a resident breeding bird throughout the northern part of the Eurasian continent.

The Eurasian magpie is one of the most intelligent birds, and it is believed to be one of the most intelligent of all non-human animals. The expansion of its nidopallium is approximately the same in its relative size as the brain of chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and humans. It is the only bird known to pass the mirror test, along with very few other non-avian species.

Tuesday was my first day back at work and it all went very well. One of my favorite things to do when I first get to work is to fold all the clean towels that the techs who work overnight launder. That morning I carried several loads of clean, but unfolded towels, out to a counter in the treatment area and then started talking to someone. When I returned to the towels, I found Alexander Hamilton had tunneled his way into the middle of the pile and had fallen asleep.

The Yellow-eared Bulbul is an endemic resident breeder in the highlands of Sri Lanka. This was one of many seen in Horton Plains National Park.

The Pin-tailed whydah (Vidua macroura) is a small songbird with a conspicuous pennant-like tail in breeding males. It is a resident breeding bird in most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.

The pin-tailed whydah is 12 - 13 cm in length, although the breeding male's tail adds another 20 cm to this. The adult male has a black back and crown, and a very long black tail. The wings are dark brown with white patches, and the underparts and the head, apart from the crown, are white. The bill is bright red. The female and non-breeding male have streaked brown upperparts, whitish underparts with buff flanks, and a buff and black face pattern. They lack the long tail extension, but retain the red bill. Immature birds are like the female but plainer and with a greyish bill.

This beautiful male Pin-tailed Whydah was seen singing in a light rain, displaying its breeding plumage and was captured during a photography safari on a game drive in Nairobi National Park, Kenya.

Loading up for Migration, will leave any day now ……

I was tracking the heron but he is a little blurred. He came to live in the park a few years back and gets a lot of attention from those who visit.

Best opportunity I had yet to capture their images, still a ways to go...

We have a couple of jackrabbits that live in our neighborhood and sometimes hop across our property near dawn and dusk. I have to shoot through the window as careful opening of a door sends them bounding away. This one was even reacting a little to the very quiet sound of the shutter from inside a well sound insulated house! Mount Shasta, California
