The "Rice: research to production" course, held for the second time on 19 May-6 June at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), brought together 29 participants from 13 countries across the developed and developing world.

 

The participants included undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from developed countries such as Canada, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and scientists from developing countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mozambique, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation in the United States, the Gatsby Foundation in the United Kingdom, and IRRI, the course also seeks to reverse the one-way traffic of recent decades that has seen thousands of young scientists from the developing world studying and then taking jobs in the developed world.

 

Students from the developed countries, many of whom had never set foot in a rice field before, began to understand the challenges rice farmers face in simply trying to grow enough food to feed themselves and their families.

This is a really interesting pedal. It's actually two complete circuits in one pedal. Designed to yield Neil Young-style sounds, but it can cover quite a bit of ground.

 

OK, so this is how you set it up. It's not like most pedals, so a short tutorial is probably in order. There are two circuits here; a Tube Screamer-style overdrive and a silicon fuzz pedal. The way I set this up is by turning the fuzz ("Si") all the way down first. Now, you have an overdrive pedal. Turn it up until you get about the level of dirt you're looking for. Now, there's a voltage sag adjustment, which has a lightning bolt marking it. This power-dimming control only influences the overdrive. So back down the power until the sag is where you like it. There's a point where the overdrive will start to sputter and spit, which is the, "Neil Threshold," but you can get a lot of different kinds of tones by starving the overdrive. Now that you've got the overdrive set up, crank up the fuzz control until you've got as much fuzz as you want to hear. That's it! That's all there is to it!

Nearly 300 experts working to address the complex illegal wildlife trade (IWT) issue worldwide joined us to discuss how we can collaborate and address research gaps to ensure the best evidence is informing action and policy (www.illegalwildlifetrade.net/iwt18event). A large delegation of the Evidence to Action organisers and presenters were then invited to attend the UK government’s London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade 2018 to further represent research and help close the divide between evidence and policy. A summary of the research evidence on the trade’s scale, impacts and complexity, the remaining evidence gaps and how we can move forward efficiently following the events, can be found in the Briefing Note (osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/35ndz/).

We inoculated our potato fields with the pathogen that causes late blight, the disease that caused the Irish potato famine. Ryan and I walked through the field, which was super muddy. We needed high humidity, so the field was irrigated until 15 minutes before we walked through it. There were >100 rows of 250 feet that needed to get sprayed with the pathogen.

 

This is the equipment we used. Ryan happened to be walking by as I took the shot.
