The Southwest Research Center hosted its annual Agriculture Education Day on Sept. 11, 2014. The center near Mount Vernon operated by the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) welcomed more than 2,100 students from nearly 50 area schools.
Bruce Burdick, superintendent of Hundley-Whaley Research Center in Albany, shared with students from Exeter High School the latest technology in UAVs. Besides showcasing the new gadgets, he explained how they can be used in agriculture such as crop scouting and livestock watch.

The long awaited (well, we waited a long time, in any case) book generated by the Science of Collaboratories project is finally out on MIT press. I'm co-author on chapter 13, "Three Distributed Biomedical Research Centers", along with Teasley, Schleyer & Hemphill.

A female white-naped crane chick, hatched May 23 at the National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center, shown at 5 days old with its adoptive parent. The chick is being raised by its paternal grandparents after its human-imprinted mother displayed inappropriate behavior during breeding and was impregnated through artificial insemination. This two-week-old chick is the most genetically important hatchling in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program. Destruction of its native wetland habitat in northeast China has dramatically decreased white-naped crane populations in the wild to an estimated 5,000. The National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center currently has 10 cranes; there are an additional 60 animals in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program.

Postdoctoral researcher Stacy Zhang holds a collected sediment sample in a lab at the Institute of Marine Sciences on March 30, 2021, in Morehead City. Zhang, a Covenant Scholar who obtained her undergraduate biology degree from UNC, is working on a shoreline restoration project with professors Antonio Rodriguez and Michael Piehler and associate professor Joel Fodre. According to the project team leaders, their goal is to create a new carbon offset for UNC through the creation of a saltmarsh and oyster-reef habitat near the IMS shorefront. They indicate that saltmarshes are “blue carbon” habitats which fix carbon dioxide in excess of respiration and bury carbon in sediments. The oyster-reef acts as a barrier, protecting the saltmarsh from waves and currents. Team leaders said their hope is for the project to serve as an enduring educational tool and demonstration of UNC’s broad vision in the ongoing efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. The IMS is an off-campus research laboratory, teaching, outreach, and service unit of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
