Someone asked to see my old Quiz pinafore again.

This is the left side of my hair in my drinking straw curlers, for someone on Flickr who wanted to see how I get my long hair wound around three inch segments of drinking straws. I'm tilted sideways here (that's my neck in the upper left and shoulder in the lower left). I've got bobby pins, snap clips or pinch clips at each end of every little hair-wrapped straw segment. Those things that caught the flash are rhinestones that I glued to some of my bobby pins --- because I like my hair accessories to be colorful and/or sparkly, and if I can't find what I want then I'll make it myself.

For those who haven't seen it, the result of these air-dried drinking straw curls in my naturally curly hair is this and it stays that way until I wash it. I don't use gel or hairspray or anything like that. Conditioner is what I use.

"How's abouts another beer before we go."

Marianne wanted to see, so here it is.

Probably unsurprisingly, given my love of regular-dresses, I also love swimdresses. I know some fats have negative associations with them, but I think they're swell. I have two Avenue swimdresses I've rotated between for the past year or so, and have been happy with them, but when I saw this anchor-print swimdress on the Just My Size website I could not restrain myself. Anchors! How kitschy. Also, it's navy, which I love. I ordered right away, only to be suspended in backorder-limbo for several weeks. In the end, this worked out okay, since our weather has been dreadfully beach-unfriendly for the past month anyway.

But today, TODAY! Turned out to be a gorgeous beach day. So I got to put on my new suit and enjoy the sunshine for a few hours.

Also, hey, it's me without makeup. My invisible eyebrows betray my natural-blonde-ness.

"...Thunderbird 1 you are clear for launch, change to departure."

Sorry, no lens or camera combo could have made this any better. It's typically not even this clear. The Thunderbirds are about 2 to 3 miles away, and the city behind is probably about 8 miles further.

Contrast was adjusted to increase clarity.

In response to several e-mail requests, here's nearly all of the battle scene found on the reverse side of a Clydesdale Bank one pound note, issued in 1982, and withdrawn in 1988. This was taken using the macro lens test rail shown in a photo posted previously. Here's the setup used, but with the projection lens mounted on the 105mm:

www.flickr.com/photos/61377404@N08/31086567744/in/datepos...

For this larger area image the primary lens on the camera was a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI-S, aperture f/11, focused at infinity, with the objective from a Soligor 450mm f/8 telephoto lens reverse mounted on the 105mm. The Soligor (badly damaged... beyond repair) was bought cheap just for salvaging the objective. Using the Soligor objective required that the stage holding the banknote had to be moved back away from the camera almost to the limit of its travel. Lighting was provided by an overhead fluorescent lamp. Unlike the image produced by the 7 inch Kodak Projection Ektanon in a previous test, the Soligor does produce some softness in the extreme corners of the photo, but not to a degree where it's objectionable.

Although in January we had already traveled a good part of Andalusia photographing the trip organized by PTG Tours, a new journey with this wonderful train crossing the Directo Gallego and saying goodbye to the Rampa de Pajares was something that, no matter how much it cost, we could not miss. And boy did it cost us! Throughout the month of November we had polled our contacts requesting information about this train, but no one knew anything about it. A few days before its theoretical departure date, we consider a Plan B with the Puerto de Pajares as an alternative. It wasn't going to be the same but since we had taken days off from work, something had to be done. The day before the start of the trip we received the news that the charter train was leaving Madrid as planned... but a few hours later we received the rumor that it could be canceled at the last minute. All uncertainties dissipated favorably in the late afternoon when we were already close to the hotel where we were going to spend the first night. The next day, we stood at the entrance to Medina del Campo to take the first photo but as soon as we arrived we were informed that the train was running into a significant delay. When it finally reached us, we were surprised by its low speed and, furthermore, the sound emitted by the locomotives was not very flattering. At the Medinense station the locomotives had to reverse the direction of travel and we took advantage of that circumstance for a second photo in the first meters of the Medina del Campo-Zamora line. The wait became very distressing because some friends who were photographing the train maneuvers told us that "very strange things" were happening. Finally, after accumulating another significant delay, the train made its appearance at very good speed so, after the corresponding photo, we left for Pedralba de la Pradería with the feeling of having lifted an enormous weight off our shoulders. Paradoxically, the delay of the train was very good for us because this was going to be the star photo of a four-day trip and at the theoretical time of the train passing, the position of the sun was not going to be ideal. Our friend Lucas urged us to rush towards the province of Zamora because he anticipated that Pedralba de la Pradería would be crowded with photographers and it would be difficult to park and find a good position. Surprisingly, in the end we were the only photographers who went to Pedralba (consequences of all the uncertainty surrounding the trip) and we were able to move around as we pleased to take this photo at a point that I love and that I thought I had said goodbye definitively a couple of years ago when I photographed one of the last Alvias that circulated on the line.

Joan of Arc was captured by the Burgundians in the spring of 1430 and ransomed to the English after King Charles refused to pay the ransom. Imprisoned, placed on trial, and found guilty of heresy after a lengthy, brutal interrogation by the inquisition. Ultimately, she was condemned for wearing men’s clothing and hastily burned at the stake by the bishop. Chains were brought from her cell to better fix her to the stake and prevent her, whom some believed to be a witch, from taking flight. A paper was rudely placed above her head with the legend “ Heretic Idolatress Apostate Relapsed” An English guard, touched by her plight, took two sticks from the bundle at his feet, tied them together in the form of a cross, and handed it to Joan, who held it close to her chest. She was dragged up chained to the stake, praying aloud constantly.

While the fire was being set, Joan requested a crucifix from the church so that she could gaze into the face of Christ as she died. As the flames leapt up around Joan, a Dominican friar heeded her request, ran to the chapel removed a crucifix, attached it to a pole, and held it up where she could see it. She was heard calling out, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus as she was engulfed in fire. One of King Henry’s secretaries exclaimed, “We are lost! We have burned a saint!”. Joan’s executioner later said that he was damned for having burned “a holy woman”. Joan’s ashes were thrown into the Seine to prevent them from being buried in consecrated ground.

A retrial was held in 1456 where Joan of Arc was declared innocent of the charges brought against her, the sentence null and void, and that a cross be erected at the spot where she had been burned. The following year the, Pope Callixtus excommunicated Bishop Cauchon for his role in the prosecution and condemnation of Joan. Almost 500 years later Joan of Arc was declared a saint by Pope Benedict XV, who called her a “most brilliantly shining light of God”

I don't know the names of all of the estate's roses. Some, like the unnamed floribunda that fronts the cottage have been here for a long while. It flowers recurrently and abundantly — it may be a variety brought in from America post-WWII. Whoever put it there knew what they were doing.

There's the little seedling one of uncertain parentage I cheekily call Belinda's Rose from time to time, after the scullery maid. I think that's her name. She's never about when I am, and I have my suspicions she and the rose have a lot in common.

The witch's roses are an anonymous delight, so I keep them. She left them behind when she flew off, never telling me their name, and never returning.

Cook will venture out to the garden every now and then to consult with the gardener about this and that: what's good now, what's coming on, and so on. This day, as she walked by she mentioned that there were some lovely little buds on the climber by the gate. But you'd need a ladder to get to them.

From my time on the boards of the shearing shed I learnt to never upset the Cook. She's done her time in the kitchen at the shearers' quarters, and if you can believe her, as a classer in the shed. I know better than to be dismissive. What she really meant was if you want your dinner on time, you'd better get me those roses.

They're the little red buds arranged here on Cook's bench with Jude the Obscure. These Autumn buds aren't as big as some of Summer's beauties. But they do alright. Each of those roses is magnificently scented — like roses of old — yet they don't fight; the sum better than the parts.

I commented about her arrangement and she said she was sorry that the Stuart Crystal vase was already taken up with more of Jude's magnificence. After all that, I can't remember what was for dinner on that night!
