"The Water Dragon brings to light what is hidden. Memories and desires that may have long been forgotten and repressed in the Unconscious can emerge by scaring or confusing us with their apparent negativity or destructiveness."

Shadow

In Jungian psychology, the shadow (also known as ego-dystonic complex, repressed id, shadow aspect, or shadow archetype) is an unconscious aspect of the personality that does not correspond with the ego ideal, leading the ego to resist and project the shadow. In short, the shadow is the self's emotional blind spot, projected (as archetypes—or, metaphorical sense-image complexes, personified within the collective unconscious); e.g., trickster.

In this exhibition of portraits we meet; The Ancient, The Beast, The Beautiful, The Bride, The Fairy, The Femme Fatale, The Flower, The Horned, The Innocent and The Mirror.

Some things go on. Pass on. Some things just stay. I used to think it was just my rememory. You know. Some things you forget. Other things you never do”.

~Sethe (The pensive protagonist in Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer prize and National Book award winning novel ‘Beloved'.)

Memory is a messy necessity. On one hand, it curates our past and gives us our identity; on the other, it is a frail feature of our brain that is highly susceptible to time, trauma, and emotions. When something so contradictory and paradoxical mates with a writer of Toni Morrison’s caliber, one expects the birthing of something extraordinary. ‘Beloved’ was the lovechild in this case. It is a fictional recounting of African American life under and after slavery. Based on the life of Margaret Garner, a historical slave woman who killed her girl child to ‘protect’ her from horrors of slavery, this claustrophobic novel does not mince words, leaves blood where it can’t be ignored, and rough handles the core concept of memory. Here, Margaret’s character –Sethe– slits the throat of her unnamed infant girl and then, from the depths of her motherhood, had the word ‘Beloved’ engraved on her tombstone. For the rest of her life, trying to reconcile and heal, Sethe hides from and seeks this painful memory in equal measure. And in this unrest, a new word is coined: ‘rememory’. “History versus memory, and memory versus memorylessness.”, Morrison later defined the word, “Rememory as in recollecting and remembering as in reassembling the members of the body, the family, the population of the past… The effort to both remember and not know...

Read that with me slowly… 'Rememory as in recollecting and remembering as in reassembling the members of the body, the family, the population of the past …' that has been ripped apart. Neither can you dwell on it for too long, nor can you ignore it for a long period of time either. This uncomfortable recollection of repressed memory – it seems– has a paranormal quality to it. In the novel, Sethe says, “Some day you be walking down the road and you hear something or see something going on. So clear. And you think it's you thinking it up. . . But no. It's when you bump into a rememory that belongs to somebody else.” Is it possible to walk into some else’s rememory, as Sethe suggests? Or, perhaps it’s a metaphor to represent the interconnectedness of our collective past and present human experience –especially of trauma– and its subsequent transformative narration to ourselves and others. Our ancestors still tell us their stories, don’t they? Like Sethe and other characters in ‘Beloved’, we are all story-inheritors. But unlike them, why is that we reflect on our inheritance in such seldom?

In her Nobel prize for literature lecture in 1993, Morrison gave us the unforgettable quote about language, “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” I wonder, if Sethe would have disagreed and instead, as our lives’ true measure, cited ‘rememory’.

I can't get out of my bed, think there's magnets in my mattress

Might as well just be a casket for all I care

Oh no, here we go again

The bad thoughts are creeping in

The bad thoughts are creeping in

When I feel crazy, I hide it, then fall apart in private

Where my mirror's the only one who sees my tears

There's a method to my sadness, it's a chemical imbalance

And my head is damaged way beyond repair

I'm a manic depressive, passive aggressive, emotionally repressed

Introverted extroverted, melancholic, alcoholic mess

I wish my inner thoughts were dinner conversation

I wished on every star and every constellation

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Some days, I wish I was dead

Think I'm broken, I can't fix it

It's an intangible sickness, but it's there

Oh no, here we go again

The bad thoughts are creeping in

The bad thoughts are creeping in

So I wrestle my demons 'til I go off the deep end

Where I'm drowning and I can't come up for air

I've tried every medication and I've gone in hibernation

Hiding in my room like a bipolar bear

I'm obsessive, compulsive, and self-destructive

Hey, what did you expect?

Narcissistic and neurotic, I'm just one big ball of stress

I wish my inner thoughts were dinner conversation

I wished on every star and every constellation

I wish that I was calm and wasn't always anxious

The bad thoughts are creeping in

The bad thoughts are creeping in, oh

The bad thoughts are creeping in

The bad thoughts are creeping in, oh

The bad thoughts are creeping in

The bad thoughts are creeping in

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive) (Creeping in)

Oh, manic, oh, manic, oh (I'm a manic depressive)

This is the site of the embarkation of the Mayflower, which carried puritan pilgrims to the Americas in July 1620, so next year marks the 400th anniversary of that famous voyage.

While the pilgrims are often described as fleeing persecution and seeking religious freedom, their idea of what religious freedom meant was rather different from what most people presume. They wanted less freedom for people, and a more austere life that was even more heavily devoted to God and Church. Away with papist ideas, away with fun, begone with Christmas — the pilgrims wanted nothing to do with that decadent lifestyle, so fled England to a new land where they could be repressed to their hearts content.

Although their final departure from England was Southampton, the voyage started here in Rotherhithe, probably on this very spot, which is now known as Cumberland Wharf.

The artwork is a whimsical representation of the ghost of a pilgrim father, William Bradford, the Governor of the New Plymouth Colony

The sculpture was installed in 1991 and created by local artist, Peter McLean

The photograph can be seen as a deep exploration of the subject's inner world. The blurred reflection in the mirror symbolises the unconscious mind and hidden desires, with the intense orange hair representing passion, energy, and possibly repressed emotions. The blurred figure might represent the shadow self, the parts of the psyche that are often hidden or suppressed.

The contrast between the subject's pale skin and the vivid hair symbolises vulnerability and strength, or the contrast between the external persona and internal experiences. The lighting, which casts shadows that emphasise the contours of the subject's back, indicates an exploration of the self and a journey into the depths of one's being.

Chapter I: The Fallible Revelation.

"Somewhere along today's modern prairie of debauchery and forgotten ambition lies the essence of humankind's ego. A fine and convoluted mess of what-ifs and soon to be has-beens. This fact remains the unspoken and sad perennial truth of your reluctant ontological overview on reality, doesn't it? And the real truth is.." The vampire explained before slowly willing herself to emerge rather gracefully from the shadowy depths, which had previously only exposed a luminous pair of sleepless eyes. ".. The moment you set foot down here you became inescapably doomed," the creature finished with the tiniest timbre of melancholy invading her somber explanation.

"I'm sorry to say that I spin no greater comedy upon either of you. Consider yourselves unlucky - curse your specific god, if it helps. It is what it is. And remember - this whole farce is Mother Earth's eternal punchline, and she ought to be afforded that credit."

Before the confused pair had digested the gravity of their situation she pounced at them with an indiscriminate and preternatural speed barely visible to the naked eye. Anguish, screams and finally their whimpering pleas came to an end - and as death passed the vampire by like some nameless vapor, which ultimately turns out to be nothing at all, she obtained some semblance of tranquility.

In regards to the unsuspecting couple who in their ultimate blunder had engaged this darling figure in curious pursuit down into those dank and subterranean maintenance tunnels - yes, it was their unmistakable end. As expected the vampire initially felt little to no remorse during any blood repast. By now it could be surmised and perhaps underlined that such a manipulative being had the intellect of a serial killer and the hunting prowess of a panther.

It was an elementary thing to tow victims into their final vista before the butchery began. This barbarous routine rarely demanded these extravagant mind games, but the vampire was nothing if not self-absorbed and theatrical in nature .. And it kept things somewhat interesting.

Or at least that is what she had been continually telling herself for untold centuries of time. Yes, an ocean of time had probably elapsed by now. Though perhaps within some violently repressed section of where the heart formerly pulsed epiphany and the sting of folly in pure nihilism was finally beginning to take its toll on her. No one knew, and certainly none were alive to speak otherwise.

When I told my partner what I decided to name this photo, he laughed at me because I (admittedly) use that word for everything, including a university paper this past year.

From wikipedia: "Saudade is a unique Galician-Portuguese word that has no immediate translation in English. Saudade describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. It's related to the feelings of longing, yearning.

Saudade has been described as a "...vague and constant desire for something that does not and probably cannot exist ... a turning towards the past or towards the future." A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing. It may also be translated as a deep longing or yearning for something that does not exist or is unattainable."

That resonates so much with me, and I think it fits quite well with this photo.

The “Don’t Touch My Hair” Series is a body of work that looks at both the beauty and objectification of black women and their hair by displaying beautiful, intricate hairstyles. Taking inspiration from West Africa and recreating them from a modern perspective. It uses colour and decoration inspired by my Yoruba culture, whilst framing the women in the photographs both as objects and people. Their faces range from vacant emotions to ones which are expressive. Referencing when black women can express their emotions outwardly and other times when their feelings must be repressed.

The women photographed are Abi Kasim, Precious Beattie and Raihanna Thompson. Hair was done by Rebecca Emmanuel and make-up by Precious Beattie.

"I discovered that my obsession for having each thing in the right place, each subject at the right time, each word in the right style, was not the well-deserved reward of an ordered mind but just the opposite: a complete system of pretense invented by me to hide the disorder of my nature. I discovered that i am not disciplined out of virtue but as a reaction to my negligence, that i appear generous in order to conceal my meanness, that i pass myself as prudent because i am evil-minded,that i am conciliatory in order not to succumb to my repressed rage, that i am punctual only to hide how little i care about other people's time."

G.C Marquez "Memories of My Melancholy Whores"

The Art of Being Well by Dr. Drauzio Varella

If you don't want to be ill… …Speak Your Feelings.

Emotions and feelings that are hidden, repressed, end in illnesses as: gastritis, ulcer, lumbar pains, spinal. With time, the repression of the feelings degenerates to the cancer. Then, we go to a confidante, to share our intimacy, our "secret", our errors! The dialogue, the speech, the word, is a powerful remedy and an excellent therapy!

If you don't want to be ill… …Make Decisions.

The undecided person remains in doubt, in anxiety, in anguish. Indecision accumulates problems, worries and aggressions. Human history is made of decisions To decide is precisely to know to renounce, to know to lose advantages and values to win others. The undecided people are victims of gastric ailments, nervous pains and problems of the skin.

If you don't want to be ill… …Find Solutions

Negative people do not find solutions and they enlarge problems. They prefer lamentation, gossip, pessimism. It is better to light a match that to regret the darkness. A bee is small, but produces one of the sweetest things that exist. We are what we think. The negative thought generates negative energy that is transformed into illness.

If you don't want to be ill… …Don't Live By Appearances.

Who hides reality, pretends, poses and always wants to give the impression of being well. He wants to be seen as perfect, easy-going, etc. but is accumulating tons of weight. A bronze statue with feet of clay. There is nothing worse for the health than to live on appearances and facades. These are people with a lot of varnish and little root. Their destiny is the pharmacy, the hospital and pain.

If you don't want to be ill… …Accept.

The refusal of acceptance and the absence of self-esteem, make us alienate ourselves. Being at one with ourselves is the core of a healthy life. They who do not accept this, become envious, jealous, imitators, ultra-competitive, destructive. Be accepted, accept that you are accepted, accept the criticisms. It is wisdom, good sense and therapy.

If you don't want to be ill… …Trust.

Who does not trust, does not communicate, is not opened, is not related, does not create deep and stable relations, does not know to do true friendships. Without confidence, there is not relationship. Distrust is a lack of faith in you and in faith itself.

If you don't want to be ill… …Do not Live Life Sad.

Good humor. Laughter. Rest. Happiness. These replenish health and bring long life. The happy person has the gift to improve the environment wherever they live. "Good humor saves us from the hands of the doctor." Happiness is health and therapy.

Catharsis (from the Greek κάθαρσις) is the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from strong or repressed emotions. It was originally used metaphorically by Aristotle in the Poetics, to compare the effects of tragedy on the mind of a spectator to the effect of a cathartic on the body, i.e., the purification and cleansing of emotions, particularly those of pity and fear.

The photo was captured in mid-January 2019, during peak flow at Chantara waterfalls in Troodos Mountains, Cyprus. The extraordinary wet season that we are experiencing this year brought back to life all the ephemeral rivers, but also revealed the dead bodies of seven poor women murdered by a serial killer between 2016 and 2018, that were then dumped at an abandoned mineshaft and nearby mine lakes. It’s the first time that such a crime is recorded in Cyprus and shocked the society. What this event has to do with the photo? Well, the suspect is literally “one of us” – a keen photographer and also a member of the Flickr community that no one would have thought of committing such horrible actions. Catharsis is the only word that I could think of as a remedy to these tragic events.

Technical details for those interested: Single shot captured with Nikon D750 and Nikon 14-24 mm f/2.8. Framed at 18 mm and exposed for 1s at f/8 and ISO 100, using a Lee 6-stop ND filter. Special thanks to my good friend Ole Henrik Skjelstad for his valuable editing suggestions.

*Saudade" pronounced: sawˈdadi or sawˈdadʒi in Calee and in Galician: sawˈðaðe; saudades is a unique word of ancient Portuguese origin that has no immediate translation in English. Saudade describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing will never return. It's related to the feelings of longing, yearning. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost child , or a family member who has gone missing for a long time.

Saudade was once described as "the love that remains" after someone is gone. Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure and well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone one's deep love , parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets or places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past. In Portuguese, 'tenho saudade tuas', translates as 'I have saudade of you' meaning 'I miss you', but carries a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have 'saudade' of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future. Explained best I could; painted even harder for there are so many ways to express it; all are good as long as they come from the soul .

The shadow is a Jungian archetype that represents the darker side of the human psyche, containing repressed ideas, weaknesses, and desires. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung believed that the shadow is a part of the unconscious mind that contains things that are unacceptable to society or to one's own morals and values

"It was not witches who burned.

It was women.

Women who were seen as

Too beautiful

Too outspoken

Had too much water in the well (yes, seriously)

Who had a birthmark

Women who were too skilled with herbal medicine

Too loud

Too quite

Too much red in her hair

Women who had a strong nature connection

Women who danced

Women who sung

or anything else, really.

ANY WOMAN WAS AT RISK BURNING IN THE SIXTEEN HUNDREDS

Sisters testified and turned on each other when their babies were held under ice.

Children were tortured to confess their experiences with “witches” by being fake executed in ovens.

Women were held under water and if they float, they were guilty and executed.

If they sunk and drowned they were innocent.

Women were thrown off cliffs.

Women were put in deep holes in the ground.

The start of this madness was years of famine, war between religions and lots of fear. The churches said that witches, demons and the devil did exist and women were nothing but trouble. As we see even today, there is often a scape goat created, and the chaos escalated in Sweden when the Bible became law and everything that did not line up with what the church said became lethal. The Bible fanaticism killed thousands of women.

Everything connected to a women became feared, especially her sexuality.

It became labelled as dark and dangerous and was the core of the witch trials through out the world.

Why do I write this?

Because I think the usage of words are important, especially when we are doing the work to pull these murky, repressed and forgotten about stories to the surface. Because knowing our history is important when we are building the new world. When we are doing the healing work of our lineages and as women. To give the women who were slaughtered a voice, to give them redress and a chance of peace.

It was not witches who burned.

It was women."

Celtic cross inscription at porthaw holy well located near fr hegartys rock In 1711, a fugitive holy man by the name of Friar Seamus (James) Hegarty, was beheaded by English officers in accordance with the Penal Laws, which were implemented in 1698 and repressed the Catholic faith and prohibited their Sacraments.

Fr Hegarty carried out his work in secret, hiding in a small cave in Buncrana, the whereabouts of which was only known to his sister, Mary, who would travel out to him each day with provisions. By night, he would celebrate mass in the countryside, away from prying eyes. While many villagers were aware of his activities and kept a watch out of his behalf, his brother in law, Thomas, had grown suspicious of his wife’s daily excursions and decided to follow her. He reported the hiding place of the valiant priest in return for a £5 reward, and soldiers were dispatched to enact the harsh law.

Some stories suggest that Fr. Hegarty was dragged from the cave, while others say he attempted to escape on horseback with the intention of swimming to safety across Lough Swilly. In both versions, he was captured and beheaded. While Fr Hegarty’s body was buried at the scene, it is said that his severed head was sent to Dublin so that a reward would be paid out for the proven death of a cleric.

According to legend, Fr. Hegarty’s head bounced several times after it was severed from his body, and visitors to the site will note that the patches where his head hit are clear of any vegetation to this day. The rock itself bears the likeness of a cross etched in to the stone. Some believe that this manifested organically, while others might think it was added by someone’s hand, whether spiritual or otherwise.

A luminescent white horse has been seen galloping along the footpath in this area, and sometimes the figure of a man (believed to be the Friar himself) is also seen as it’s rider. The path ventures close to the cliff edge and a local story tells how, in the 1990s, four teenage boys who were riding their quadbikes here one evening, encountered a spectral horse blocking their way. They slammed on their brakes and then witnessed the mighty beast leaping off the cliff and vanishing without a trace. Had the ghost not appeared that evening, there was every chance that one or more of the youngsters could have perished on the rocks below. buncrana county donegal

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IidttSEKVTA

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a German composer, conductor and pianist born in Hamburg exactly 200 years ago. Like Mozart, he would become a child prodigy and would die young.

Also like Mozart, whose sister Maria Anna (Nannerl) was a great musician, Mendelssohn had an elder sister, Fanny, who was a composer but had her talents repressed because she was a woman. She was the author of 466 pieces, some of which were published by Felix under his own name. It was the case of Queen Victoria’s favourite piece, “Italy”, which was Fanny’s, not Felix’s.

Mendelssohn’s most famous piece worldwide is “Wedding March”, from his “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, based on Shakespeare.

Fanny and Felix would both die in the same year, due to strokes.

The Llaima volcano occupies a large part of the Conguillío National Park and on its western flank there are two ski centers. It is one of the most active volcanoes in South America and one of the most volcanoes in the Southern Andes. The altitude of the mountain rises to 3,195 meters above sea level, the volcano has increased its height between 30 and 50 meters after the last eruptions since 1956 to date, the last recorded in 2009. Its western, southwestern and eastern flank present more than 29 km2 of glaciers. The most extensive is the western and southwestern, which reaches an area of 19 km². On the eastern flank, meanwhile, 4 glacial languages cover an area of 10 km².

The volcano presents an almost perfect conical shape although it consists of two summits and about 40 slag cones, being the most prominent north sector chasm and being separated by a portezuelo of approximately 1 km length of the Pichillaima, the southern summit that reaches 2,920 msnm. The northern summit features an open crater 350 m in diameter and more than 300 m deep, which in April 2009 was obstructed with a pyroclastic cone whose height exceeds the edge of its highest peak. This crater has an active fumarole since 1994 with emission of gases and water vapor. A thick layer of pyroclastic material has covered the ice, especially towards the eastern sector, which has partly stopped glacial ablation.

The thaws are drained by some minor rivers and streams radially through the holes of the Captrén and Quepe rivers (tributaries of the Cautín River) and the Allipén in partial form. Of these drainages, the Trufultruful River stands out, which forms a series of lakes repressed by solidified lava such as Lake Verde, Arcoíris and Conguillío.

My childhood (and now adulthood) was filled with odd phobias and beliefs. A long forgotten one resurfaced the other day for no apparent reason. It happened as it often does, sort of like a game of word association. One thought triggers another completely unrelated thought, and so on until some obscure recollection from decades ago remerges from the dark closet of repressed memory. In this case it was utter fear of wearing new shoes. Actually not the wearing of them per se, rather the reaction of other people seeing me in them. Probably a tie-in to a related phobia of not wanting to stand out in any way; literally a congenital desire to blend into the background. In my twisted thinking, new shoes would blow my cover and this was the cause of some high anxiety. As a result I would wear shoes well beyond their service life. Mom would threaten to throw away old shoes if I continued to wear them in public. When ‘new shoe’ day inevitably arrived I was a complete wreck. Even the act of purchasing them was awful. I still recall having to sit on a chair while a shoe salesman pressed my foot into one of those medieval looking measuring contraptions. Then out came the shiny new shoes from a box and onto my feet they went. Never liked the feel of new shoes, the stiffness and the awkwardness they caused me in walking (there was already enough of that as it was). That night I would set about trying to age the shoes by scuffing them up. Anything to erase the look of newness and help ease my transition into the next school day. Sad really, imagining some poor kid, holed up in his bedroom trying to distress his brand new shoes. But such is my life.

That’s a long intro for this photo, but still appropriate. I visited a sunflower field near sundown recently. It’s one of those things that most every photographer dreams of and most of us will shoot sooner or later. And I always wonder how I will interpret a scene that has already been shot by a million others before me. As luck would have it, I arrived at just the right time of day, just before sunset with ideal sky and cloud conditions. The resulting photos were languid and immersed in vibrant color. A lovely photo, but it didn’t quite fit my through-line of dreary beauty. But by toning down the color and brightness a bit, I achieved exactly the look and feel I was going for. In many ways, the original photo was like my new school shoes. Just needed a little distressing before I could feel comfortable wearing them.

What keeps mankind alive?

The fact that millions are daily tortured

Stifled, punished, silenced and oppressed

Mankind can keep alive thanks to its brilliance

In keeping its humanity repressed

And for once you must try not to shriek the facts

Mankind is kept alive by bestial acts

Ok, each shadow represents each of my repressed feeling and is a demon that haunts a my soul. they are repressed into a psychological "bottle" that i can choose to open. (this is all psychological and metaphorical, folks. i'm not crazy x3)

Lishu- lust. she fills my mind with dirty thought and urges.

Crasus- blood thirst. he controls my urges to kill, destroy, burn, blow up, beat up, and completely obliterate everything and everyone around me, calling it fun.

Rovuresu- paranoia. she is the one who controls my psychopath side, making me want to loose all self-control, reminding me of everything depressing that's ever happened to me.

Informal existing light portraiture with an inherent theme of repressed childhood memories.

Staged portrait of a friend and client.

Your body needs to be held and to hold, to be touched and to touch. None of these needs is to be despised, denied, or repressed. But you have to keep searching for your body's deeper need, the need for genuine love. Every time you are able to go beyond the body's superficial desires for love, you are bringing your body home and moving toward integration and unity.

..the beautiful words of Henri Nouwen.

To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be governed is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be placed under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonoured. That is government; that is it's justice; that is it's morality.

This small bracelet charm is probably Victorian and made of ivory.

I know that the ivory trade is something that should be utterly repressed, but that should not lead us to ignore or destroy historical items made of that material.

We must bear in mind that the past is another country and they do things differently there.

The image, titled "Introspection - Midnight," captures a deeply evocative scene that resonates through various artistic and philosophical lenses. In the context of expressionism, the photograph portrays an intense emotional experience rather than physical reality. The use of dark tones and shadows emphasizes inner turmoil or profound introspection. The figure’s hunched posture and the obscured facial features suggest an internal struggle or deep contemplation, aligning with the expressionist emphasis on depicting psychological states.

While impressionism focuses on capturing moments and the effects of light, this photograph leans more toward capturing an emotional rather than a fleeting moment. However, the subtle play of light on the figure's back and the floor introduces an impressionistic element, capturing the transient and ephemeral quality of light in a dark setting.

The image evokes existential themes, particularly through its exploration of solitude and introspection. The figure appears to be in a state of deep reflection, perhaps grappling with existential questions about identity, purpose, or the human condition. The darkness surrounding the figure enhances the sense of isolation, a common theme in existential thought.

The interplay of light and shadow is a significant aspect of this image. The soft, diffused light that illuminates the figure’s back creates a stark contrast with the surrounding darkness, symbolizing perhaps a glimmer of hope or understanding in an otherwise bleak or uncertain environment. The shadows add depth and mystery, enhancing the emotional weight of the scene.

The posture of the figure—hunched over with knees drawn close—conveys vulnerability, introspection, and possibly sorrow. This physical stance speaks volumes about the emotional state of the subject, suggesting a need for self-protection or a moment of profound contemplation. The overall mood of the photograph is somber and introspective. The darkness, coupled with the solitary figure, evokes feelings of melancholy, introspection, and solitude. The light illuminating the figure’s back adds a layer of subtle hope or insight amidst the prevailing darkness.

Despite the somber mood, there is a subtle sensuality in the photograph. The gentle curves of the figure’s back, the soft light highlighting the skin, and the overall intimate setting contribute to a quiet, understated sensuality that speaks to the beauty of the human form in moments of vulnerability. From a Freudian perspective, this image could be interpreted as a visual representation of the unconscious mind. The darkness represents the unknown and the repressed, while the illuminated back of the figure could symbolize the conscious mind’s attempt to bring some of these hidden thoughts and feelings into awareness. The posture may indicate a regression to a more primal state of being, or a retreat into the self to confront internal conflicts.

In summary, "Introspection - Midnight" is a powerful image that utilizes elements of light and shadow to convey deep emotional and psychological states. It speaks to themes of isolation, introspection, and the complexity of the human condition, resonating with various artistic and philosophical traditions.

the behavioral specialist observed that even though conor is 14 years old, he’s Very active and curious...more so than most cats his age. I was like Well ya, he’s a gemini... (this got no response - haha)

after going over his history, it came out that his personality may have been repressed for most of his life, having been in a household with very dominant cats. Gorby was the original boss. he died when conor was 3. next up was madeline and she ruled until a little over a year ago.

i think i told you guys how funny it was to watch conor experiment with begging and demanding things after madeline died. he had never begged in his life! he barely even meowed before. he was super mellow and passive, for as long as I can remember. it was a very big change in his life, to be without a companion (a very bossy demanding companion who demanded everything for the two of them), to all of a sudden needing to express his needs himself. (he’s an expert now, by the way...)

his issues started not long after madeline died so madeline kept entering the conversation. not only was he discovering his own power without her, but he had lost a daily outlet for his aggressions. even though I caught them cuddling often (well, curled up next to each other), and he definitely watched after her when she was deaf, he would also sneak up behind her and knock her to the ground, or punch and cut her in fights, and this happened almost daily.

so, in some respects, I became the new madeline.

the hope is that the aggressiveness will calm down if I give him more outlets to express his energy and offer more options for him to use his mind. He was put on a calming supplement called zylkene and i’ve implemented some new routines and play time. it’s a very big focus in my life right now so you’re bound to see many pictures of him in this project :)

so far the things that have worked the best involve treats. he loves running after treats (how did I give him treats by hand before? How boring!), he loves it when I hide treats. most recently I got a cat puzzle you throw treats into and he super loves that...

it’s been a process. i’m trying. everything was getting better but now it’s getting worse again. there will probably be many ups and downs until we figure out the best plan so i try to stay calm and positive, even when anxiety is flaring up in the background of my mind. this is all new. i just started implementing changes this month.

.....i shot this from outside the window.

The shore-lark soars to his topmost flight,

Sings at the height where morning springs,

What though his voice be lost in the light,

The light comes dropping from his wings.

Mount, my soul, and sing at the height

Of thy clear flight in the light and the air,

Heard or unheard in the night in the light

Sing there! Sing there!

Over the years, my sister and I have both had weird, disturbing, recurring dreams about bathrooms. They're always filthy, especially the toilets, and always inexplicably so.

One theory is that the dreams have to do with some sort of repressed emotion. You know... something that needs to come out, but can't in such an inhospitable environment.

I don't know if there's any truth to that. For what it's worth, I haven't had those dreams in a long time. I'm just attracted to rundown, rotting, mouldering things. The why is unimportant.

Truciolo, Sándor Márai

"(...) we do not love so much what is beautiful, good and virtuous, but rather everything that is repressed, imperfect, restless, and that protests by gnashing his teeth - everything that is not virtue and condescension, but is instead imperfection and rebellion".

Taken as a Christmas present to please his bourgeois wife, the dog Truciolo turns out to be more difficult to manage than expected. This novel is antithetical to "My Dog Tulip" by J.R. Ackerley: there an idyllic story between owner and dog, with Ackerley finding the ideal friend in the dog, here a series of misunderstandings, mistakes and stupid misunderstandings that ruin everything and lead to a sad epilogue. Together with Virginia Woolf's book, "Flush, biography of a dog", "Truciolo" and the aforementioned book by Ackerley are for me an unmissable triad for readers who love dogs ("Truciolo" however is the bitter morsel).

........................................................................

SAUDADE is a unique Galician-Portuguese word that has no immediate translation in English. Saudade describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. It's related to the feelings of longing, yearning. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost 'something' ...

Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone ( one's children, parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets) or something ( places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past) should be there in a particular moment is missing, and the individual feels this absence. In Portuguese, 'tenho saudades tuas', translates as 'I have saudades of you' meaning much more than 'I miss you', carrying a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have 'saudades' of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future...

Catharsis is the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. This is usually done through art forms such as tragedy, drama, dance, and music.

The AIDS Epidemic started in the Late 70’s and 80’s spreading through the United states leaving a trail of death, confusion, and fear while communities watched it all happen on the news. There were many public figures, activists, artists, and allies whose stories were never told and have been forgotten. When we remain silent on issues that have had significant impact on our society, it creates a fear or stigma that keeps us from understanding each other and moving forward. Through Dance and multi-media, The Catharsis Project retells these stories to fight the stigma that silence creates.

This screening will also be a WORLD PREMIER of a new piece of work entitled "Affinity"; which is the start of a tribute to ACT UP and all the work they did for people living with HIV & AIDS, when the government was doing nothing.

Photos have a way of triggering lost memories that might otherwise have remained deeply repressed, likely forever. Happens to me all the time. I quick scroll back through the photos on my phone is all it takes. It's a wonderful mental exercise, especially for aging and often forgetful brains like mine. Gives me a perverse sense of optimism that so many detailed memories remain intact despite the abject failure of my mental retrieval system. Again, absent the photos, I wouldn't even have many of the memories, and certainly not all of the nuance. It's a huge motivator to shoot more photos when I'm out and about, even if the subjects seem trivial in the moment. They might prove much more significant in a year or two in terms of filling in the mental gaps.

In the case of this old carriage barn, I found myself here in the worst possible lighting conditions. I much prefer shooting abandoned buildings under overcast skies. I'm always looking for skies that complement my subjects. But the universe landed me here on a day filled with bright sunshine, and who am I to argue? Somewhere in the middle of the shoot it occurred to me these photos were no longer about the barn, but the shadows being cast upon it by adjacent trees. It's like looking at the negative space rather than an actual object. That realization changed everything. The brilliant sun, which normally creates a sense of cheerfulness, was now conspiring to distort the underlying visual with an ominous mood. Best of all, the old barn was now darkly contextualized in a way that I could not even have imagined when I first approached it. And a rich tapestry of memory encapsulated in a single photo.
