While this may not be the most artistic shot I've ever taken it represents a pretty lucky catch for me. While a South Shore job works their yard in Burnham, IL a 1x1 unit coal train off of UP and bound for NIPSCO at Michigan City with a South Shore crew in the cab rolls by on the main. Catching the NIPSCO train under wire and at a distinctive South Shore location was a winner for me. Fortunately with the 'flying camera' I could adjust to both trains moving to catch a workable shot. An attempt to pictorially represent the concept of sound and, especially, eerie noises echoing through a haunted door or gate…

The shot was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's troop of echoes which came flowing through the door in his poem lines of ‘The Haunted Palace.’

The subject of Black/White as color is debated on the web with no true consensus.) The decal is on a dark rear widow of my MINI which I selectively under exposed to achieve the background.

Iowa Northern Railway train BUWA has IANR 4100, 3809, 3802, and 3803 for power on this December Sunday to make the run from Butler Yard near Shell Rock, Iowa to Bryant Yard in Waterloo. The train had 75 cars out of Butler, but have brought the head 15 into the CN Waterloo Yard for interchange. In the background EJE 667, still in orange, is paused in between it's duties as the yard switch engine, and a few other motors are laying around at the engine facility including EJE 658 in CN paint.

The CN is in the process of purchasing the IANR but is still awaiting STB approval, and so this is perhaps a bit of a look into the future. Meanwhile the past is well represented in this view too, as the Illinois Central Roundhouse here in the background has been present in at least in some form, (it's had stalls added and removed over the years) back to as far as 1901 (and possibly longer, it was hard to pin down a good date for the roundhouse construction from just some quick online research).

The Iowa Northern Railway uses the CN Mainline in Waterloo and Cedar Falls for a few miles from Waterloo West to Cedar Falls Junction as part of an arrangement going back to the 1980s and a highway project that saw the consolidation of some lines in Waterloo to make room for US 218. Normally from what I've seen the interchange work is typically done by the IANR in either direction at some siding tracks just west of Waterloo West and so they don't come into the yard like this. But occasionally when traffic warrants the CN will have the IANR come directly into the "A Yard" here at the Waterloo Terminal to make their setout and pickup as seen here. They would tie onto a cut of cars and shove back out of the yard to the rest of their train waiting on the mainline.

I had gone out after this BUWA even though it was likely to be a cloudy day because IANR 4100 on the point is one of the road's newest units (arrived to the IANR in August 2023 per some online notes, though it's originally a C&O unit) and still looks pretty sharp. But it was a nice bonus to get them making this less-common move, and this angle normally would be a heavily backlit-view if the sun were present.

Although painted to represent a USAAC OA-10 Catalina based in Halesworth, Suffolk in WW2, this is actually an ex Canadian example which served the RCAF as '11005'.

The original 433915 aircraft operated out of Halesworth airfield in the role of air sea rescue during 1945 and on 30th March that year after landing to provide help to of all things another stricken flying boat the aircraft lost use of one engine. With high seas that meant she was stuck just a few miles off the Dutch coast. Whilst bobbing around on the surf on the first night a pair of ME210's strafed the Catalina to such an extent that she was listing and no longer airworthy. Four days later after enduring constant seasickness and regular immersion in freezing sea water the crew were rescued by a launch sent out from Great Yarmouth. A second launch then destroyed and sank the Catalina rather than have her fall into enemy hands.

For the above reasons the preservation society chose to adopt the identity of the sunken sister aircraft. The preserved aircraft is now based at Duxford with Catalina Aircraft Ltd.

The shadow is a Jungian archetype that represents the darker side of the human psyche, containing repressed ideas, weaknesses, and desires. Swiss psychologist Carl Jung believed that the shadow is a part of the unconscious mind that contains things that are unacceptable to society or to one's own morals and values

The Frogmore Cotton Gin (previously known as the Piazza Gin Building) is a two-story frame building constructed sometime before about 1880 (due to the use of square nails), but its exact date cannot be determined. The present equipment is later than the building, but it is impossible to know exactly when it was manufactured and installed. Much of it bears patent dates of 1883 and 1884. The Munger double box press has to have been made and installed after 1890, because it has Birmingham stamped on it, and the company did not open a plant in that city until 1890.

Representing a major technological innovation called "system ginning," the Piazza gin was state-of-the-art for its period. Cotton was sucked from wagons via a circular tin duct into a wooden Munger separator which is high above the surrounding machinery. The suction process was actuated by a fan within the duct system which was powered from the drive shaft on the lower floor. Cotton was being transported through the flow of air, and the purpose of the separator was to remove the excess air and force the cotton into the separator's hopper-like bottom. The cotton fed from the bottom of the separator into a two-tier system of conveyor belts with a wooden housing. The belts swept the cotton along into a pair of Gullett gin stands. The conveyor mechanism made it possible to regulate the amount of cotton going into each stand. Each stand is fabricated of magnolia wood and iron and is a two-stage boxy affair. The upper portion, or feeder, encases a large wooden roller featuring rows of iron spikes. These removed leaves and other foreign objects from the cotton and forced it into the ginning mechanism below. Here a series of circular saw blades with iron ribs between removed the seeds. The teeth of the saw blades literally tore shreds of cotton away from the seeds. The seeds then fell to the floor. The seedless cotton, now called lint, was forced from the two gin stands into a pair of tin battery condensers. The condensers are essentially large ducts that channel the cotton to the baling stage which was centered around a pair of deep wooden boxes mounted on a circular platform set at one end of the gin house. The platform is set flush with the ginning floor and is supported by a central iron post which allows it to rotate. It is almost as wide as the building, and when stationary, one large cotton box is on each side of the building. The box on the south side was fed lint from the condenser via a special feeder known as a tamper which "tamped" the cotton into the box. When the box was full, the platform was rotated 180 degrees, which brought the filled box on top of a screw thread press located in the floor below. It also brought the empty box from the other side of the gin underneath the tamper, for the filling process to begin again. The lint in each successive box was compressed upward into a normal size bale, which once complete, was released from the box using latches. The press was powered from the drive shaft on the ground floor, while the platform itself was rotated manually. A signature feature of the gin building is a pair of large rooftop ventilators (seen painted in red in the photograph above) which extend several feet above the roofline. These functioned to release exhaust from the separator and the tamper.

The Piazza Gin had been abandoned for years in its former location and was moved in 1997 from Rodney, Mississippi to its present location (seen above) on the Frogmore Cotton Plantation. The new setting is historically appropriate because Frogmore is a historic cotton plantation which once had a similar gin. The second floor of the gin building and the ginning/pressing equipment were moved intact. The roof had to be removed for the move, and the first floor structure was removed due to severe deterioration. Its drive shaft was removed intact, as were the steam engine and gristmill. Once on site, the roof and first floor were rebuilt, the drive shaft put back in place, and the steam engine and gristmill positioned where they had been originally.

Early gins are so rare, virtually non-existent, because continuing technological improvements rendered them obsolete. The Piazza cotton gin is of regional significance within the South as an extremely rare surviving historic cotton gin. More specifically, as an example of "system ginning," it represents the remarkable technological improvements made in cotton ginning in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Because of its rarity and significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on January 27, 1999. All of the information above, and much more, was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration and can be viewed here:

The larger team movements of a dragon dance differ from the smaller, more playful motions of a two-person lion dance. Unlike a Western dragon that brings mayhem, a Chinese dragon is a good thing. As a leader at the top of the chain, a dragon drives away lesser evil forces. That retains good fortune and a safe haven for a community.

One more thing. The powerful dragon represented the imperial power of the Emporer, a centralized power of immense proportion, whose privileged purpose was to bring protection, stability, and prosperity to China's folks.

This dramatic image from January 2006 offers a peek inside a cavern of roiling dust and gas where thousands of stars are forming. The image, taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, represents the sharpest view ever taken of this region until this time, called the Orion Nebula. More than 3,000 stars of various sizes appear in this image. Some of them have never been seen in visible light. These stars reside in a dramatic dust-and-gas landscape of plateaus, mountains, and valleys that are reminiscent of the Grand Canyon.

The Orion Nebula is a picture book of star formation, from the massive, young stars that are shaping the nebula to the pillars of dense gas that may be the homes of budding stars. The bright central region is the home of the four heftiest stars in the nebula. The stars are called the Trapezium because they are arranged in a trapezoid pattern. Ultraviolet light unleashed by these stars is carving a cavity in the nebula and disrupting the growth of hundreds of smaller stars. Located near the Trapezium stars are stars still young enough to have disks of material encircling them. These disks are called protoplanetary disks or "proplyds" and are too small to see clearly in this image. The disks are the building blocks of solar systems.

This image represents the western part of the supernova remnant. I have taken this image under not completetly darkened skies. First I took the Ha images, then after 2:00 am (moon was set), I took the OIII data.

For blending channels, I used "Pixelmath" in Pixinsight. This is the "classical" HOO image. H-alpha to red only and OIII to green and blue. The red is coming out best this way, I think. When I take e.g. 30% ha in the green, the red is more orange like.

I also made an artificial luminance image and added the ha channel to the OIII channel. After that, I did my common processing steps (DBE, Deconvolution, Morphological Transformation, HDR,Unsharp mask...).

I am qute happy with the data I have captured in just 3 hours.

SIMULACRUM, the April-May 2025 exhibition by Manoji Yachvili (aka Onceagain) @ Nitroglobus Main hall.

I'm proud to share that Onceagain is back at Nitroglobus, and this time her work is featured in the Main Hall, giving her more space to showcase her stunning art.

I’ve always loved her work—delicate in color yet powerful in emotion, offering a glimpse into her real-life personality. When she mentioned she might leave Second Life after completing her SLEA3 project ("What is Art and What Will I Leave Behind When I Go?"), I asked her to please exhibit at Nitroglobus one last time before departing. Thankfully, she agreed.

Her current exhibition, SIMULACRUM, is one of her most recent projects. It addresses a very timely topic: the rise of AI-generated imagery and her personal opinion about this. It goes without saying that Onceagain created all the art in this exhibition without the use of AI.

Come visit see for yourself AND most of all ENJOY.

dido haas, owner/curator Nitroglobus gallery

As always I am super glad David Silence found time in his busy schedule to create the excellent poster, based on one of Onceagain's images.

Description of the exhibition by the artist:

The simulacrum, borrowed from the Latin simulacrum, was born as an effigy, as a statue that depicts divinities, heroes, illustrious figures (but nothing is more illustrious) and the extension of meaning makes the simulacrum a shadow, a ghost, a reflection, which in essence is not or is no longer that someone or something it represents – imperfect simulation.

Reality no longer exists, it has disappeared, crumbled by the media and modern technologies that propose images that do not refer to reality, that receive meaning only from other images and that are perpetually regenerated, thus remaining increasingly disconnected from what was originally real.

Everything I see has an appearance and the power of appearance, without a faithful external image and therefore devoid of the original vitality.

We are surrounded by empty shells, as I feel now, and perhaps it is time to disappear because nothing of what I see pleases me anymore, including this vain attempt of mine to translate this feeling into images

The clock is installed in a Renaissance arch crossing the Rue du Gros-Horloge. The mechanism is one of the oldest in France, the movement was made in 1389. Construction of the clock was started by Jourdain del Leche who lacked the necessary expertise to finish the task, so the work was completed by Jean de Felain, who became the first to hold the position of governor of the clock.

The clock was originally constructed without a dial, with one revolution of the hour-hand representing twenty-four hours. The movement is cast in wrought iron, and at approximately twice the size of the Wells Cathedral clock, it is perhaps the largest such mechanism still extant.[1] A facade was added in 1529 when the clock was moved to its current position. The mechanism was electrified in the 1920s and it was restored in 1997.

The Renaissance facade represents a golden sun with 24 rays on a starry blue background. The dial measures 2.5 metres in diameter. The phases of the moon are shown in the oculus of the upper part of the dial. It completes a full rotation in 29 days. The week days are shown in an opening at the base of the dial with allegorical subjects for each day of the week. (Wikipedia)

Description

The Indigenous Peoples in Canada are an inspirational example of resilience due to their ability to withstand adversity and persevere through generations of oppressive colonial policies. Historic injustices persist, including the effects of cultural genocide from the residential school system of Canada. Here we symbolize bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples through gathering. Accomplished through the support of the seven grandfather teachings, represented by the seven rings of the installation, that originated with the Anishnabae Peoples, passed down through generations that ensures the survival of all Indigenous Peoples: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth. Orange represents the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, and the reality that the support of non-Indigenous Peoples, as Indigenous Peoples assert rights to self-determination, will strengthen relations and begin to redress the historic wrongs. Orange is displayed in the ropes where the pattern pays homage to the creation of drums, where the ropes were weaved to honour culture. The installations flow towards the lifeguard stand reinforces the strengthening of the relationship and that the protection of Canada hinges on the unity between peoples. We aim to symbolize movement to a new relationship, one based on mutual respect that honours Indigenous treaties and rights. The road forward is long and nonlinear, but we commit to take the journey together.
