Dozens of opposition candidates' supporters march through downtown Minsk

Minsk, 10 December. About 50 supporters of opposition presidential candidates Uladzimir Nyaklyayew and Andrey Sannikaw staged an unsanctioned demonstration through the center of Minsk on December 10.
The demonstrators gathered in the square in front of the Academy of Sciences at around 5 p.m. and stood there for some 35 minutes, displaying signs that demanded additional television airtime for opposition candidates. Uladzimir Kumets, one of the organizers of the demonstration, called on those present to march along Minsk's main thoroughfare, Independence Avenue, to the HUM department store. Police officers in plain clothes warned that the march would be regarded as an unsanctioned mass event. Yawhen Afnahel, an authorized representative of Mr. Sannikaw, replied that there were few places in Minsk where campaign events were banned and that the sidewalks of Independence Avenue were not among them.
Plainclothesmen accompanied the crowd but did not intervene. The demonstrators reached the HUM department store at around 6:20 p.m., joining supporters of Messrs. Nyaklyayew and Sannikaw camped out near its entrance. Speaking through a megaphone, Mr. Afnahel called on voters to gather in downtown Kastrychnitskaya Square on December 19 after the closure of polls to wait for the announcement of official and unofficial election results. He also invited voters to attend a meeting with Messrs. Nyaklyayew and Sannikaw in Liberty Square on December 16.
The demonstrators dispersed with no arrests being made.
