So I was heading home after doing a bunch of front end work on The Goat at a friend's place in North Georgia. I'd already put in about 60 miles of paved twisties when I decided to hit Skyline Drive along the ridge of Talladega Mountain to check the improvement in the front suspension on a dirt road. Quite nice, by the way. But then I heard a knocking/ringing noise that I thought was maybe the steering head rattling loose. When I applied the front brakes, I had none. As it turned out, I lost the bottom caliper bolt, and the top one was very loose, which allowed the caliper to swing up off of the rotor. Having no other alternative, I broke out the giant zip-ties that I've been carrying in my took kit for the last ten years. I was pretty impressed that these held for the last five miles of dirt and the thirteen more miles winding down the mountains into Talladega where I was able to find a suitable replacement bolt to get me home.

The Brum Critical Mass ride included a towable sound system. Alas, the battery died between the owner's house and the ride, so he had to tow it around, but we had no tunes.
There was some attempt to see if something was wrong with it. It had LEDs blinking inside. ooooh.

My friend’s dogs got a hold of her childhood panda bear. I didn’t take a before photo as the damage done to the its face was horrific. You can see were I crochet-repaired his right eye and half his muzzle.
For the eye I drew up the shape of the eye area and the area that needed repair then sewed it in. For the muzzle I blanket stitched the yarn onto the bottom half, crocheted a half-circle, and then sewed the entire face back together.

Qui n’a rien à réparer prend un café, une bière, du vin, ou aide à réparer un objet appartenant à un autre. On peut aussi toujours y trouver des idées à la table de lecture qui propose des ouvrages sur la réparation et le bricolage.

For many years, the residents of Bailey Island, Maine advocated that a bridge be built to connect their island with Orr's Island. The town of Harpswell, Maine, which encompasses both islands, turned down the request. However, when the Maine Legislature drafted a law allowing the state and counties to fund bridge construction, a plan emerged to build such a bridge. A contract was signed in 1926, with construction beginning on the Bailey Island Bridge in 1927 and finishing in 1928. The engineer for the project was Llewelyn N. Edwards, bridge engineer for the Maine State Highway Commission.
Design of the 1,150-foot bridge was complicated by the tides in the area known as Will's Gut. It was decided to build a cribstone bridge using granite slabs from local quarries on the border between Yarmouth, Maine and Pownal, Maine. Granite slabs were considered sufficiently heavy to withstand wind and wave, while the open cribbing allowed the tide to ebb and flow freely without increasing tidal current to any great degree. Some 10,000 tons of granite were used in the project. A concrete road (now part of Route 24) was built on top of the cribstones.
A sidewalk was added in 1951 and guard rails in 1961. On July 19, 1984 the Bailey Island Bridge was recognized as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The Bailey Island Bridge is reported to be the only granite cribstone bridge in the world.
As of March 24, 2009, the bridge is currently undergoing reconstruction to repair cracked or sheered stones. The reconstruction will total eleven million dollars and is scheduled to be complete by 2011.
