Bad photo, sorry. I was taking these while my husband worked, trying not to get in his way.

To take the top off, you need to take out the bolts shown on the previous photo, and take out the hex nuts I mentioned at the very beginning. You can't get the top off otherwise.

Once you've done that, you'll need to sort of lift the front edge of the top a little and slide it toward you. This tips the back edge down and helps you get it out from under the loosened control panel, and it should unhook from this clip. There's a power connector on the right hand side of the control panel that you'll need to unhook from the top. This isn't a job that takes muscle, just some wiggling things about and some finesse. Taping the lid of the washer closed makes it easier to maneuver it without getting smacked in the hands.

(These notes are for my reference. Repairing your appliances can be dangerous. You can hurt yourself or damage your appliance. Be sure you know what you're doing, be careful, and don't blame me if things go wrong.)

A colleague of min has this fantastic Norwegian design icon, a Tandberg Sølvsuper (translated to Silversuper) radio and amplifier. Unfortunately he's been having some problems with it. He told me the audio was "scratchy, then dropped out." It's always hard to tell what's wrong by peoples description, but it sounded like the speaker contacts where loose, or maybe just dirty.

I unscrewed the cabinet, a combination of wood and aluminium. Only four easily accessible screws to get to the components, hurrah. They knew how to make stuff repair friendly back then!

Now the strange thing is that as I poked around I couldn't find anything wrong. The only issue was that only two out of four speaker outputs had audio (but what audio, my god what a quality!). I have a pair of old Bang & Olufsen speakers with the same specs as the Tandberg amp (4-8 ohm), and they sound FANTASTIC when plugging my portable cd player to the input marked PHONO (after pressing down the limiter button). But if I tried connecting it to the TAPE input I got absolutely nothing.

I have a neighbour that has alot of experience repairing electronics, and he pointed out that it could be the cable/contact itself, and sure enough, when measuring the resistance on the white and red phono jacks and matching them to the five pins on the DIN-plug, we found that the middle is ground, but only two of the other four pins got a signal, so no wonder there where only sound in two speakers.

What threw me off at first is that there is actually a little audio in the two speaker outputs that are supposed to be dead, but this is pretty normal in older amplifiers. The audio signal can "bleed" over to other parts of the circuit, usually only noticable if you crank everything up full volume.

Anyways, everything seemed quite fine, but I used a tiny screwdriver to try to scrap off any dirt on the contacts, and that seemed to do the trick, improving the conductivity of the contact = better sound and less scraping.

I also cleaned up all the buttons and knobs on it, as a bonus.

Brought it back and my colleague was really happy with it, he has tested it and it works great.

Sometimes a simple poking is enough. True for making babies AND fixing amplifiers. :)

All done!

This section of the roof on the kitchen building at our ministry site in Tecate, Mexico always takes damage in high winds. I've replace it several (5+?) times over the years. Time to do it again, since there may be rain coming this weekend.

Here, I've replaced all the bad shingles, so hopefully we are waterproof again. I did not replace the broken shingles along the ridge line, since this takes much more work - the ridge cap shingle need to be removed first. And since this area is still waterproof, I saves for for another (rainy) day.

Last Friday the furniture man came to repair my grandmother's bed, which had been damaged in transit. The headboard simply would not stay together! The right rear bedpost kept leaning away from the rest of the bed, causing the headboard and support to fall out of their slots in the bedpost. Judicious and careful application of special glue and an hour or so of clamping all the pieces together solved that problem.

The left front bedpost had also not been installed correctly (which is what precipitated the whole thing, in my view). We discovered, though, that it had sustained damage much earlier.

The furniture man installed a couple L brackets were they weren't intended to go to stabilize it, and I hope that will work.

"Be careful!" the furniture man joked with me. I replied, "Well, I lead a quiet life."

Anybody want to help me break a bed? ;-)

With the screw in place, the disc is secured and the tail of the spring is trapped in the slot. Not wanting to do anything permanent to the camera, I didn't drill and tap a hole for a second screw, so the disc doesn't sit quite flat on the not-quite-flat camera surface; but this is not a functional problem. If the owner finds a good spring, he can revert the camera to its original state without any marks from this repair.

Since the newest photos appear first, you will have to scroll a ways through these photos to see what happened to my Shox as I was wearing them one day. The dangling Shox pod and all.

In the interim, I had tied some wire under the pod to keep it from dragging, but it slipped out from time to time, and then the other side came apart and was dragging the same way.

I wanted a repair that was quick and simple. I thought of adhesives, but I've found that they tend to fail when flexed. So I ended up stringing a wire through the heel knotted under the heel and under the insole inside the shoe.

That kept the heel from flopping under the toebox, but, as you can see from some of these photos, it still shifted side to side. Totally wearable but strange feeling as the pods slipped out one side and then the other.

I realized I could pull the slack of the wire into the sneaker holding the pod and heel more in place, and just bend it over under my foot to keep it in place. I also dispensed with the insoles. I had thought that standing on the knot in the wire would hurt my heels, but I really don't even feel it.

So the first two of these pictures show the modified repair, which so far seems to work. If this doesn't hold up, I'll dispense with the Shox pods and have yet another pair of shoes with negative "lift". I'm sure that will be fine.

The tape deck on this vintage stereo made some awful sounds, so I opened it up to take a look. It is usually just a dirty playhead etc, so I went over the mechanisme with a q-tip and some electrical spray.

There was also what looked like soda on the main circuit board, some brown sticky stuff, probably from a glass that had been placed on top of the stereo and spilled over.

More q-tip-ing and spraying, and a while later I had the great pleasure of listening to the soundtrack from Octopussy, the James Bond movie, on an old cassett tape.

And what a sound these old stereos make!

Few situations are as frustrating as getting your car breakdown far out and about. In addition you will find the hazards of other vehicles driving by, you need to also look for a mechanic so she or he could make repairs for your vehicle. You require to understand more about preventative maintenance, auto repairs and mechanics. Otherwise, these guidelines should assist you to handle car repair problems more competently later on.

Ask the questions you might have in the shop. You need to ask things specific towards the problem which has arisen and the best way to take preventive action moving forward. Preventing problems with your car is a wonderful method for saving money.

Be certain and regularly look at your radiator. Run your vehicle for any bit, switch off the engine and after that open the hood. Never open the radiator on the running car. Find out exactly what the fluid level is (make use of a dipstick), and keep in mind that coolant should have a little bit of water added before entering your radiator.

It may be a whole lot, but if you need to still replace the part, it is really not likely to be a great deal over time.

Knowing where to find the best mechanic for the auto repairs could be tricky. When you are aware the best information, it may be way easier. You will possess a benefit once you know the best things to ask and things to watch out for. Keep these details in your mind, and employ it when you experience car trouble. www.deymercspecialist.com/

Yay!

The power of flickr revealed... After seeing Tommy-toe's toilet repair job, I was inspired to fix our own toilet, which had been leaking for a while.

I received some advice from Tommy-toe and petergibbons949, including a lengthy e-mail from Tommy-toe with detailed instructions.

I'd thought I might get to it this weekend, but was feeling even more lazy than normal and didn't want to go out to get the parts we needed. But then last night, as I was trying to go to sleep, the constant "bloop-bloop-BLOOP" of air bubbles in the tank was about to drive me mad. I figured we needed to just go ahead and get it done.

So we went to Home Depot today to pick up the parts we would need. Based on the advice I'd received, I figured we needed only a new fill valve and a new flapper. (I didn't even know of the existence, let alone the name, of the fill valve until Tommy-toe's helpful notes/e-mails.)

The toilet tank section of the Great Mall Home Depot was a mess. I picked up a fill valve, but then I saw next it to it the "whisper quiet fill valve." I like whisper quiet toilets, so I figured that's what I wanted--but I couldn't find any in the pile of opened boxes and misplaced items. So, figuring we also needed a flapper and could potentially need to replace the other parts, we bought the entire kit (which included the whisper quiet fill valve) for about $20.

The funny thing about Home Depot is that I'm not sure if it makes me feel more manly or less so. On the one hand, I'm at Home Depot looking at all of the tools and, sometimes, thinking of how useful it would be to, say, have a new hammer. On the other, much bigger hand, I realize how totally incompetent I am around anything that requires any kind of physical jiggering. (We did buy a toolbox also, and it might have felt manly walking through the parking lot with that. But Benson carried it out. He did look pretty manly, come to think of it. Though maybe having a conversation about how manly something is isn't too manly. Hmmm...)

When we got home, I started cleaning up and getting ready, when I suddenly realized that it made much more sense for Benson to tackle the replacement. After all, someone needed to document the repair. :) Plus, he's smaller and has smaller hands. But most importantly, he's usually much more handy than me. (He's replaced a couple of flat tires for me. I used to just call AAA for it.)

It was so easy to fix it. We (well, he) followed the directions step by step, replacing only the two parts we thought needed fixing. (The flush valve would have required unbolting the tank from the base, so we figured we'd replace the other ones first.)

Soon enough, everything was in place and we flushed it. Happily, after the flush was done, no more water was trickling into the bowl! Yay!

I find myself going in to check on the toilet every now and then to see if it's decided to act ornery again. So far, so good. The bathroom is eerily quiet now. In fact, I am kind of starting to miss the "bloops."
