A CHILD'S DEATH.

THE CORONER'S INQUEST.

RIDER OF THE JURY.

The Coroner (Mr T. Gresham) held an inquiry at Freeman's Hotel, Freeman's Bay, this morning, into the circumstances atending the death of Lawrence Waters, a three weeks' old child, who died yesterday morning under circumstances necessitating an inquest.

Albert E. Waters, the father of the child, said it appeared to have been apparently healthy enough at birth, but a few days later seemed to develop some throat trouble. About the ninth day after birth Dr. Frost was called in to attend the mother, who was suffering with her chest. The child seemed to be still in fairly good health. It was being fed at the breast. Dr. Frost called again three days later, and the mother's condition was then such that her removal to the Auckland Hospital was ordered by the doctor. Mother and child were taken to the hospital on the Saturday morning about 9.30 o'clock. The child was still being suckled up to the time of the removal. It was at this time 16 days old. The child was not admitted to the hospital, but when he returned home at midday he found the child lying on the bed. There was also a note from Sister Jane, of the Central Mission, advising him to try and get a Mrs Gooch, of Arch Hill, to take the child. He was unable to get Mrs Gooch to take it, but ultimately lnduced a neighbour to take the child. This was about 5 o'clock. On the following Monday evening Dr. Knight was called in and attended to the deceased. As Dr. Knight did not visit the child on Tuesday. Dr. Frost was called in on Tuesday afternoon. The child had then been removed to Nurse Gibson's place.

Nurse Gibson said she saw the child from its birth up till the ninth day. It was then a well nourished, healthy child. The child was still well on Saturday, the 22nd inst., at the time of the mother's removal to the hospital. Witness next saw the child on the Tuesday afternoon. That was the first she heard of the child being ill. At the request of the one who had charge of it. witness took the child to her own home in Sale street about 4.30 that evening. The child was then in a very low condition. It was warm, however, and appeared to have been well cared for. She understood that Dr. Knight had ordered the child to be fed on Nestles condensed milk. Witness also gave it this food, but it was too low to take much. The child died at about 3.20 yesterday morning. In the opinion of witness, had the child been admitted with the mother to the hospital and received breast nourishment, it would have now been alive. She said this after 20 years' experience as a nurse. Until she was called on the Tuesday afternoon, she had been under the impression that the child was admitted with the mother.

To a Juryman: She did not consider that the nature of the mother's illness would I have rendered it inexpedient for her to continue to suckle the child.

Dr. Constance Frost stated that she was called to see the child's mother on the 18th inst., and again on the 21st. The child appeared to be in good health; in fact, it was a fine, well nourished child. The mother was, however, suffering from some temporary trouble in the back, apparently pleurisy, and owing to lack of means for her proper care at her own home, witness ordered her removal to the hospital. Witness rang up the resident physician at the hospital, and asked him if possible to admit the child with the mother, as it was being breast fed and only 14 days old. She informed the hospital authorities there was no one to look after the child at home. The house physician replied that he would do his best to obtain its admission. Assuming the mother was suffering merely from a passing attack of simple pleurisy or other illness of a temporary nature, witness considered it would have been advisable to have allowed so young a child to continue at the breast. In any case, witness considered it would have been more expedient to have admitted the child in the Interest of its welfare. Witness urged its admission, and deduced from its rejection that the rules were against it. Witness was not prepared to say, however, that had the child been admitted it would be still alive. Witness performed a post-mortem, which revealed bronchitis, pleurisy, and pneumonia. The child was not at all emaciated. The cause of death was pleurisy and bronchitia.

To the Coroner: In witness' opinion, pending a diagnosis of the mother by the hospital authorities, the proper thing would have been to have admitted the child with the mother. Jean Naukiville, visiting sister of the Central Mission, who accompanied the mother and child to the hospital in the ambulance, and she saw the manager of the hospital, who informed her that the child could not be admitted. One of the doctors came up, felt the child's pulse, and said that they could not take the child, as it was not ailing. The doctor also gave her to understand that, owing to the mother's feverishness, she would not have been allowed to suckle the child.

The Coroner, in asking the jury for their verdict, deplored the state of things that prohibited the admission of a child to the hospital with its mother without any proper examination to show that such admisison was lnexpedient.

A verdict was returned in accordance with the doctor's evidence.

The jury added a rider expressing their opinion that where a medical practitioner, as in the present instance, has urged upon the authorities at the Auckland District Hospital that a mother and child should together be admitted to the hospital, it is extremely undesirable that the mother should be admitted and the child rejected.
