Remote control

Jaguar Land Rover has revealed some of the prototype technologies that its UK-based research team are developing to deliver autonomous driving in the future.

In Singapore, if you want the bus to stop, you HAVE to flag it down. It will zoom past otherwise.

When you board the bus, you tap your fare card on the little machines, and they tell you how much is left on your card. When you disembark, you tap the machines at the back, and the amount appropriate to how far you traveled is deducted. It's all very efficient. And beepy.

continuing my efforts to explain daily life in singpore, which i felt was lacking from my previous visits.

Some things are better in my head than they are on paper. The real remote, which is new and therefore not familiar is quite good, though.

1/14th Scale Tamiya model RC Tractor Truck

delta-1 (top) and delta-2 (bottom).

delta-1 is a resistor (divider) attenuator. this one is 128db, 8bit, half dB spacing per step.

delta-2 is an 8port in/out selector for stereo systems. left group of 2 are the input section and right group of 2 are the output. you can use as many or as few relays as you want and each one can be in or out; nothing is forced and each port is selectable as in/out on its own.

note the far left clusters of jumpers, all the way to the left; these set the i2c address of the port-expanders. this set of addresses shows the default jumper settings for the LCDuino-1's initial firmware, Volu-Master v1.0.

board blanks and relays are available in the AMB.org audio parts web store.

Mission 24 and Day 51

flying away

My son builds and flies remote-control airplanes and this is one of his planes. I thought it was an 'Edge' - perfect for Mission 24. But I was sadly mistaken. This is an Extra (whatever!). But his brilliant idea was to show it performing a knife-edge maneuver.

This young Padawan has soooooooooo much to learn!

there's another princess in the circuit, one that's not often mentioned,

having defected long ago to pursue her dream of becoming a luchadore.

So, I was thinking about getting a DJI Phantom 2, but decided it was a good idea to practice before buying one - so I got this instead. Still thinking about the Phantom.

My ugpraded version of the 42050 Drag Racer, equipped with 2 Buggy motors and 2 BuWizz units. It's pretty fast and it can do proper wheelies! :) Check the blog post and the videos at bit.ly/42050upgrade

I saw a couple selling these this morning. I wanted to donate four rather than make a purchase.

and didn't intend to post it to flickr. However, it does nicely show the new wall hanging from mom and dad that I put up today as well as some other things. Plus the way the coffee table looks not 24 hours after it was all lovely and clear yesterday.

See the notes!

overview: the amb.org beta-22 in 3channel config, sigma-22 (dual 30v PSU), and mvc-master, a variant of VOLUmaster software for IR (and local button) remote control.

details: amp section is pure class-A with discrete MOSFET output stages (the black heatsinks in a row on all 3 boards). that is called 'beta 22'.

power supply is the similar looking board to the left (sigma-22). dual tracking 30v DC, very low noise.

in front, left (partial hidden) is the LCDuino-1 which uses an arduino cpu and my own mvc-master firmware (motor volume control). it receives IR from any handheld remote (LCDuino1 is a learning receiver) and performs output switching (phones/speakers), motor/direction control and lights on/dark-mode control. blue button is a bulgin brand 'vandal resistant' touch switch; it can be blue, red or off (software control).

volume control on right is custom; I drilled a hole for the red LED and fed a bit of wire thru a hidden hole in the chassis front panel. that wire goes back to the cpu where it blinks or gets turned on/off, at will. the motor runs at 2 speeds for fast/slow control of the volume.

During our Christmas 2014 trip to Oklahoma, I lost my Canon RC-1 wireless remote, which I'd had for nine years and which worked with all my Canon DSLRs. So I replaced it with the Vello FreeWave Plus wireless remote control.

The RC-1 was a simple, one-button remote that used a watch battery. It used infrared and thus required line of sight to the front of the camera. Its range was limited to about 25 feet.

On the other hand, this Vello FreeWave unit uses radio frequencies, and therefore does not require line of sight and has a range of 100m. It can handle singe shot, multi-shot burst, bulb mode, and timer.

Pictured here are the transmitter (bottom), receiver (top left) and connection cable (top right).

Copycat of Caro today! No color for me, just cut.

I like doing copycats, should start planning more.

Does anyone make an all-in-one TV/Tivo/digibox/DVD-R which would only require the use of one remote and a single power source?

this remote is almost as big as the tv that it came with.
