The Avicraft model shop in Bromley, Kent - a real mecca for local model makers and remote control aircraft enthusiasts.

Among the many models I came across during my visit were examples of a WW1 Fokker D.VII, a Japanese Kawasaki Hien from WW2, and a De Havilland Venom, a British jet fighter from the late 1940s. These three, however, were just a fraction of the full selection of complete models occupying pretty much every inch of available space in the shop!

I had to overcome some initial problems with getting the receiver to bind with my DX7 remote control via the Spektrum2PPM board. The folks at 1hoch4 were very fast in updating the firmware after I sent them my remote for debugging (thanks for the support!). Now the hardware is basically complete.

For basic testing, I wrote a small application that reads the values of the PPM-encoded radio channels and converts the throttle values to the appropriate values to drive the motor speed controllers, using Arduino's map() function. I also made another test with the propellers (10x4.5 EPP) attached - this thing is mighty powerful! I could barely hold it in my hand.

The test code uses the ServoDecode library to read the PPM pulse train emitted by the Spektrum2PPM board. As it utilizes timer1 and the ArduIMU is quite limited with regards to output pins, I could not use Arduino's built-in Servo library (which uses the same timer). I resorted to using the ServoTimer2 library to drive the ESCs instead.

In September 2017, we spent 11 days of hiking and packrafting in the unspoiled wilderness of southern Greenland between the magnificent Tasermiut fjord and the remote settlement of Aappilattoq, searching for beautiful landscapes, moods of solitude, and enjoying a true deep north adventure.

Certainly, we were far from being the first to cross these lands, however we hadn't met anyone during our 10-days hike across the pathless terrain; we just saw a few footsteps of previous adventurers in the sand.

No paths, no huts, no GSM signal, no means of civilization; this is a harsh northern landscape that requires enough stamina, experience, mental strength and patience to be crossed over. For those who don't retreat, however, the experience is very rewarding: a unique mix of isolation, exploration and adventure.

It's a wonderful spot, up on Tzoumerka mts in ventral Greece. Away from clouds and tourism, a perfect place for relaxing in nature...

One of my favorite places to photograph or just to see and enjoy is the remote Galpin church. It's a lonely little building, out on the prairie near Fort Peck Lake. Unfortunately when I visited it in January the most distressing thing was not the temperatures in the -20s/-30s but the fact that someone had chosen to build a mcmansion very close by to this place, effectively ruining the peaceful and lonely prairie atmosphere about it. No longer can you pretend that you've stepped back in time to the 30s or 40s. Very sad when someone has to ruin a place by building an ugly mcmanion. But there is a population out near Fort Peck lake that has more money than they know what to do with, so they build huge homes. I'm glad this little place is still standing, but with the ugly huge home nearby I wonder for how much longer it will be there. I guess I will have to enjoy it while it lasts. Anyway, the reason I came out to photograph this place was that I need to work on winter photography. I loathe winter and I see no beauty in it so I've been trying to work on that. As I said before, the temperatures were about -20 or -30 F windchill so it was a miserable day to be out but the light was good. Alas, even after picking one of my favorite subjects to photograph, I still can not see the beauty in winter. Thankfully, spring is only a few months away.

A remote junkyard discovered in Belgium where the owner has amassed an extra-ordinary collection of old vehicles - mostly ex-military and mainly lorries and trucks, many of them from the Cold War era - that are now (2016) rusting and rotting away.

A couple of years ago, on another trip through Belgium, I'd set out to find another pinewood filled with rows of abandoned old cars, near a place called Chatillon, only to find that the entire site had been cleared a few years previously.

The discovery of this this yard - another "autofriedhof" as the Germans would call them - near the border with Luxembourg, was fair compensation for failing to get to Chatillon before everything there was sent to the crusher!
