Fruit cake with cheese and a glass of port ('port wine') at Christmastide is an old tradition in my family. The glass is one of a set that my grandparents used annually for this purpose in the first half of the 20th century. The cake in this picture is not christmas cake as such, it is an Irish tea bread made by me to Delia Smith's recipe.

I believe it was back in the 70's or 80 i last experienced freedom. and when MY children were small.. .. we felt free sometimes... it's almost better not to have tasted it when i think of the times presently :/ and so hard to describe to younger people at times :/.. anyone else ?

We arrived at the Armenian cathedral in the middle of an event commemorating and affirming the Armenian genocide of 1915. I assume the flags represent the countries that have acknowledged the genocide.
A fairly large crowd had gathered to hear the speeches and support the protest against genocide deniers.

Apollo 1 was originally designated AS-204 but following the fire, the astronauts' widows requested that the mission be remembered as Apollo 1 and following missions would be numbered subsequent to the flight that never made it into space.

One World Trade Centre - more commonly refered to as "Freedom Tower" or "Liberty Tower" - will stand at a symbolic 1776 feet when completed, and is part of a complex of buildings and memorials to go up at the site of the World Trade Centre in New York City, NY.
Paddles are not only for initiations. It is also used as a form of disciplinary action among fraternity members, or for "exchange paddle" to settle misunderstandings and among close brods during alumni homecomings.

A mother tells the story of how her son, aged eight on September 11, 2001, vowed to join the US military, and has now enrolled at the US military academy at West Point, to graduate in 2015.
A 250-mile running challenge ‘Run to Remember’ ended on at Manchester’s Sportcity on Friday 4th of April.
Police officers and staff from across the country raised an estimated £100,000 for charity running in the memory of Greater Manchester Police officer Nicola Hughes.
The challenge saw 1,800 officers from run two miles-a-day for 125 days.
Nicola and her colleague PC Fiona Bone were killed while investigating a suspected burglary in Hattersley, Tameside in 2012.
Friday saw hundreds of officers and staff running the final two-mile leg around the Manchester Regional Arena.
Nicola's father Bryn, who organized the challenge said: “It has been fantastic, the turnout and determination has been amazing.
“It has been so overwhelming – at times you cannot describe it. The amount of support we have had has just been overwhelming,
"I wanted to do something positive to remember Nicola by. The biggest motivation is making sure people remember Nicola and remember what sort of person she was."
The money raised will go to the charities Care of Police Survivors, the North West Police Benevolent Fund and Victim Support.
Bryn added: “I want to do something that Nicola would have been proud of me for and I also want to raise money for the three charities that have helped us so much during this time and will probably continue to help us for a great deal longer,"
Bryn’s next challenge is to run a marathon at the North Pole.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.

This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

btw...I saw this fella at the Fest For All, in front of the stage while the band was playing. He's actually surrounded by people, and, although he looks rather sad-sack, seemed to be enjoying himself...just getting into the blues...*+^
“I remember my grandfather giving me 50p to go buy a bar of chocolate. Half an hour later he gave me another 50p, and another and another. He couldn’t remember that he’d given me the money each time so he went on doing it. My grandfather was a minister, part of the Methodist church of Ireland. I was quite close to him. So when I found out he had Alzheimer’s it really shook my faith.
He disappeared over a period of years. He’d get confused and he knew that he knew something but couldn’t quite recall it. He’d get agitated which would get me agitated. It really tested me, and I learnt incredible patience. Towards the end there was almost a sense of peace because he couldn’t remember anything, so he was no longer frustrating himself. One of the last times I saw him was at hospital. I was running late and all the family were already there. When I walked into the room he recognised me immediately and said my name. He hadn’t done that for years. It’s a nice memory to remember him by.”

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd pop in with a Sunday Selfie...I may make this my weekly habit, and still do one every now and then during the week too.
Life has been pretty busy lately. Work is going well overall, we got a new manager at work who I think will be much better to work with than the guy we've had for the last year. The new guy is a bit more of a people person, and he seems to have a good deal of respect for those of us who have paid our dues and put in lots of time at the dealership.
Liina has been busy finishing up some of the wedding photos she did last month, so now I just need to convince her to put some up or let me put them up for her. We are currently working on a website for her through Zenfolio, and I hope to have everything finished on it before she leaves to go see her mom in Europe in 2 weeks.
Speaking of that, I'll definitely be around a bit more during the first week of her trip, as I'll be taking "vacation" time at work and just chillin' out with the dogs & pets at home while she is gone. I should have plenty of time to take pics that week and I plan on doing some urban exploration shooting while I have the time off :)
Hope you guys are all having a great weekend, sorry if I haven't been around much, but I'll try to do some catching up soon :D
