Relocation of observation site and found a big clearing!
LT: 05:42 (5 hours and 38 minutes after C1 and 54 minutes before third contact)
Today I went to central Washington to help with a bighorn sheep capture and relocation project. The sheep were caught with nets fired down from a helicopter. We gave them a bunch of medications, took blood samples, checked their general health, and applied ear tags and radio collars, and then they were transported in trailers to a new location to join a newly established herd.
The orange straps are hobbles -- each one fastens a front foot to a back foot to restrain the sheep. The blindfold simply helps to calm the sheep. We had just finished working with this ewe and I was waiting for the men to come carry her to the trailer. Once she was in the trailer, the hobbles and blindfold were removed.
Bighorns are native to Washington but had been extirpated in the 1930s. Since then, efforts have focused on reestablishing populations.

The Farver School was built in 1868. Originally, the school was located about two miles from its present location. The building was relocated and restored. In 2016, the building housed the local historical society's museum.
These pictures are just a small example of the devastation in and around Tuscaloosa, Alabama right now. Total destruction. Miles long. Miles wide. You see a pile and wonder if it is a house. You stare for a few minutes and still do not know.
It is most interesting to look in these piles and see people's lives, once private, now exposed in the sunshine, laying on the ground.

Relocated and went without internet for nearly a month (longest stretch since student days). Lauren and I occupied the cafe around the corner bi-weekly, nursing beverages while milking the wifi connection.
Our new place is surrounded by these yuppie cafes which all sit empty most of the time. We would choose a new one and drop the obligatory dough for some concotion that would sit on the counter while we write emails or surfed the latest new. '
It was funny how disconnected one feels in the modern age without 24 hour internet access. With everything that was happening in Japan we were in a constantly wondering about updates, etc. The living quarters took on a different vibe though without the constant buzz of the computer. We read more. Went for more bike rides.
Almost 3500 internally displaced people have been successfully relocated from the UN Protection of Civilians site in Juba to a new site within the community in a joint effort between the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and humanitarian agencies.
“This is the first movement of displaced people of this magnitude out of the UN Juba protection site. Almost all of those relocated were women and children,” said the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, David Shearer. “They had expressed a strong desire to leave the UN site and to be reunited with their husbands and other family members. Early indications and, in my discussions with those who moved, is that they are pleased to be back in the wider community.”
The combined effort to relocate the families to an existing site at Mangateen in the central city followed an UNMISS-negotiated end to sporadic fighting between various groups within the UN protection camp over the past few weeks that threatened vulnerable civilians inside. Once a resolution was reached and people expressed a desire to leave, humanitarian agencies and UNMISS worked quickly and cooperatively to establish temporary housing at Mangateen along with clean water, sanitation and health services.
“All those involved in the relocation process realized the seriousness of the situation given the large number of vulnerable women and children being moved. It was a true team effort to carry out the massive logistical task of transporting and supporting these families in a new location within just a few days,” said David Shearer.
The Mangateen site has traditionally been managed by the South Sudan Government’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and it will continue to do so. Humanitarian agencies will provide additional assistance on request.
“I am particularly grateful for the Government’s rapid response to this situation which ensured that people were able to be safely moved and accommodated back in the community,” said David Shearer.
“Hundreds of thousands of people fled to UN protection sites across South Sudan out of fear for their lives during the ongoing conflict. But these camps are not a good long-term option for families,” said David Shearer. “If people have the trust and confidence that the environment is safe enough for them to voluntarily return home, UNMISS is poised to assist them. But providing that confidence in the security situation very much lies with the Government.”

A straight forward, Kanji only Koshin Pillar that was relocated to Shirahata Jinja in Fujisawa City, along the Old Tokaido.
For those interested, one can read about Koshin in many places, but I will give a quick summary that I wrote for another image of mine:
Koshin could be described in English as a "Folk Religion." The core belief is that every person has 3 worms residing in his or her body. These worms keep a record of Bad and Good Deeds for a period of 60 days. On the 60th night, the Day of the Monkey, they leave the person's body to report to Tentei (God), who will then review these deeds and pass a fitting judgment on the person.
There are 3 levels of punishments for those that have been acting badly. If You have Bad Deeds on Your record, You will either become sick, have Your life span shortened or You will Die.
Of course, people don't want any of this to happen, particularly if they've been up to no good. Therefore, to stop the worms from going to Tentei, there are 2 options: First, stay up all night every 60th night so the worms cannot leave Your body (which many people did and some still do, usually partying) or Secondly, protecting Yourself with an image of Shomen-Kongo and the 3 wise monkeys.
Shomen-Kongo is a Deity that protects against disease and of course the 3 wise monkeys don't see, hear or say anything bad about what You've been doing.
The Three Monkeys originated in Japan to replace the three worms and employ a kind of Japanese word play and ideogram. The word for Monkey in Japanese is "Saru (さる)." One ending of old Japanese words that means "not" is the ending "Zaru (ざる)." The Three of them would then be See no Evil, Hear no Evil and Speak no Evil, or 見ざる、聞かざる、言わざる. This also sounds like "Seeing Monkey, Hearing Monkey and Speaking Monkey," however each one is covering his eyes, ears and mouth; accordingly. Thus, a play on words was begun and the Three Wise Monkeys became quite popular until the Meiji Restoration called for a separation of Shinto and Buddhism. This resulted in many Pillars being destroyed. Luckily, there were many believers that hid the Pillars and many have now been collected in groups along roadways and at Jinja (Particularly Hie Jinja, whose messenger is the Monkey) and have enjoyed a kind of revival in belief in some areas.

BAe Harrier GR3 XZ969 being relocated for display at The South Wales Aviation Museum at St Athan South Wales. Ex RAF Germany and RAF Gutersloh aircraft.
This wall was where I originally had all my CD/DVD towers. In order to accommodate the elliptical in the living room, however, I moved the swapped them with the bookshelf/fiber arts materials, so there is slightly more room in that corner for the elliptical to fit so that I can watch the TV while "running."
This relocation solves the problem of where to put more CD towers should I need to acquire any others, since I was running out of room in the existing ones, but there was no more wall space on the opposite wall to put more towers (actually, I already had A-B of the DVDs up on the top of the towers, prior to moving them) -- though I did lessen the magnitude of that problem by, for the very first time ever, culling out DVDs and CDs to sell to a used CD store; I pulled about 8 DVDs and probably two dozen CDs, which made a lot of room. Now they're sitting in a box on the floor because, having never done so before, I have no idea how to go about the business of actually selling them. (Dear Djangos Customer Service: please write back quickly.)
As an added bonus of this rearrangement, the CD towers make a handy place to store the remote while using the trainer!
A history of Rowley station
One of the best known parts of the line, and featuring heavily in the
book, Rowley station would probably be largely forgotten if not for
the relocation of the main station building to Beamish Museum in the 1970’s.
When the Stanhope & Tyne Railroad opened in 1834, there was no station at Rowley. This section of line was operated by horses pulling the wagons, with Dandy Carts used. As the line from the foot of Nanny Mayer’s incline to the Hownes Gill incline ran slightly downhill, loaded wagons would usually run by gravity with the horse at the back in a Dandy Cart, resting before pulling the wagons back uphill
(although they would usually be empty this way).
When the Stockton & Darlington Railway took over the line in 1845,
they created a passenger service, beginning in September 1845 running from Crawleyside (near Stanhope) whilst another service left the Rowley side of Hownes Gill, the carriages joining at Waskerley before proceeding to Crook (where onward travellers could go to Bishop Auckland, Darlington and beyond!), travelling up and down the various inclined planes en-route. After a couple of months, the winter service meant trains started at Waskerley, but from April 1846 trains restarted again from Crawleyside, and from a new sit at Cold Rowley instead of the top of Hownes Gill. A small station was built on the south side of the single track in 1846 at Cold Rowley, later improved in 1853. Although Rowley was, and remains, a small settlement, it was not too far from the growing industrial town of Consett.
An account of the early passenger service on the line was created
based on the notes of guard Thomas Cheeseman and written by William Weaver Tomlinson in his ‘The North Eastern Railway; its rise and development’:
"A trip by the Wear and Derwent branch of the Stockton and Darlington Railway over the elevated tract of moorland lying between Crook and Cold Rowley may have been attended with a certain amount of discomfort, but it was by no means lacking in railway interest. Two composite carriages, fitted up with outside hand brakes, sufficed for the passenger traffic between Crook and Cold Rowley. They were attached to a number of mineral waggons and drawn up Sunnyside incline (1 ¾ miles) by a stationary engine. From the top of the incline the mixed train was hauled by a locomotive engine at a speed limited to 15 miles an hour to Waskerley Park Junction, the line being a single one with one siding or passing-place on an average to every 1,500 yards.
The carriages were then detached and let down Nanny Mayor’s incline (¾ mile), running loose behind two or three loaded waggons. At the foot of the incline they were attached to a mineral train and drawn by a locomotive engine to Cold Rowley. For the return journey the regulations provided that not more than two waggons were to accompany the coaches in going up the Waskerley incline and that in descending the Sunnyside incline the coaches were to run loose behind the train. According to the statement of one of the old guards the practice was to brake the coaches down this incline, without using the rope, right through to the old station at Crook, which was near to Thistle Flat Colliery. There were no signals between Crook and Cold Rowley and no pointsmen. When it was necessary to enter a siding the fireman had to jump off the engine and attend to the switches. No van was provided for the guard, who not infrequently, at week-ends, when the carriages happened to be very full, rode outside on the buffer"
Thomas Cheeseman passed away in 1897, having started his railway
career on the Stanhope & Tyne working between Carr House and Annfield Plain in the early 1840’s. He was made passenger guard in 1847 between Hownes Gill and Crook, the two composite carriages being described as having three compartments each with no brake compartment and luggage placed on top of the carriages. The footbrakes were on each corner and frequently taken down the inclines by Mr Cheeseman without use of the rope. He was later presented with one of his old carriages (described in 1897 as ‘queer old structures that to-day would only be laughed at’), still standing in his garden at the front of Deerness House, Tow Law at the time of Cheeseman’s death however it is not known what became of it in the years since. In 1852 he was made traffic superintendent between Crook, Consett and the limekilns at
Crawleyside, holding the position until retirement in 1894.
At Locomotion Shildon you can see two examples of the carriages used on the line, Stockton & Darlington Railway composite carriages No 31 of 1846 and No 59 of 1847. Featuring a first class compartment in the centre and second class on either side, you can also see the foot-operated brake used by the guard. Whilst it’s not known which routes they worked in service, there’s a possibility they could have been amongst those used on the Wear & Derwent line.
The small station at Cold Rowley, described in 1853 as a 'room', was
enlarged in that year. Rowley had ‘Cold’ dropped from its title in
1868, and this is often erroneously given as the date of construction for the station building since preserved at Beamish, but this came five years later. Following the doubling of the track between Rowley and Hownes Gill, in October 1872 the Darlington Section Works Committee of the NER (the ‘Darlington Section’ was the remains of the S&DR’s control over its area despite having been amalgamated with the NER almost a decade before) decided that the goods depot and loading bank needed to be moved to an adjoining site, and following this in February 1873 the section’s architect William Peachey was asked to prepare a plan for a ‘very small station’ at Rowley – still described as Cold Rowley despite the official title change. Peachey’s plans were approved in March, and a contract signed with William Ridley of Tow Law in May, a surviving plan by Peachey being dated 30 June 1873 and the station likely completed that year. This is the station building that survives today at Beamish Museum.
In 1894, the smaller waiting room at the south side of the station was swept twenty yards away during strong winds described as 'the most violent and destructive experienced in many years'. The following year, a powerful thunderstorm saw one corner of the goods warehouse demolished after it was struck by lightning. Snow meant trains delayed or stuck in snow was a relatively common occurrence, including a notable occasion in 1910 when a passenger train was stuck for several days. At least by then, the previously open waiting area in the centre of the station had been enclosed with the arches filled in with a wood and glass screen, with central doors, done in around 1906.
Another change to the setup at Rowley came in 1914 when the small signal box on the platform was replaced with a larger box nearer the bridge. The change was made owing to the track between Rowley and Hownes Gill being reduced from double to single track and subsequent changes to the operation and signalling apparatus, but the double track between Rowley and Burnhill junction remained.
The First World War saw great changes on the NER. Not only were its men leaving for the armed forces (18,339 NER men served in the war, 34% of staff of military age), women joined the NER in unprecedented numbers too with a workforce of 7,880 women by the end of the war compared to 1,470 at the start, not including the thousand or so employed at the NER managed munitions factory at Darlington North Road. The NER was required to move men, munitions, and all other items necessary for the war effort and was attacked from the sea in coastal bombardments and from the air during Zeppelin airship raids. An assault of a rather different kind occurred at Rowley on 12 June 1915.
Charles Nixon, a resident of Rowley, arrived there on the 1219 train
and promptly threw a stick at stationmaster Pybus who was stood on the platform. He then went into the waiting room where there was a woman and several children present ‘and used such foul language that he was requested to leave the premises’. Nixon then ‘declared that he would fight any ___ about the station, and struck at the stationmaster’ (what he said between ‘any’ and ‘about’ is put as a deliberate gap, as copied here, so it is up to the reader to insert a suitable profanity – presumably it was too shocking to be printed in the newspaper report!).
Porter-signalman Henry Almond went to stationmaster Pybus’s
assistance, Nixon striking Almond several times and then leaving the station. Nixon returned at 1300, entering the office and striking
Pybus on the neck, and when Almond entered shortly after, Nixon struck him several blows again. After being ‘ejected from the premises’, Nixon returned back half an hour later and ‘again abused the complainants’ who sent for the police and again removed Nixon from the station. Clearly determined, Nixon returned yet again at 1545, striking Pybus and Almond, and again was ejected, this time with the assistance of a neighbour who had been sent for by Almond. When Nixon was charged several weeks later at Consett, being prosecuted by the NER, it was said by his defence (who had advised Nixon to plead guilty) that ‘there had been some misunderstanding about an excess ticket, but this did not justify the defendant’s conduct’, adding that ‘Nixon had come into some property, and become addicted to drink, the result being that he had been confined for three months in an asylum’.
Nixon was charged £1 for each case – one for assaulting Pybus and the other for assaulting Almond - and the fees of the prosecuting
solicitor and witnesses were allowed. Rowley station’s lad platform
porter Albert Lawson joined the 17th (North Eastern Railway) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was wounded in late 1917, but not severely.
Whilst the passenger service along the Wear & Derwent Railway provided a vital link to the wider world for the local inhabitants, it was never particularly busy. Economic conditions in the 1930’s saw the LNER passenger services in North West Durham come under the gaze of management, with falling passenger figures linked to a rise in motor bus services in the area. The decision was taken to cease passenger services between Blackhill and Tow Law, thus closing Rowley and Burnhill stations entirely to passengers, from 1 May 1939. Trains from Darlington now terminated at Tow Law. Services in the area were also affected by the closure of passenger stations and service on the Lanchester Valley line, a local newspaper reporting that the closures resulted in upset ‘among residents of North-West Durham at the decision of the London and North-Eastern Railway Company.’
Rowley remained open as a goods station until June 1966 when it closed, the line staying open a few years later until the line from Conset to Burnhill closed in May 1969. Rowley station was rented from British Railways by Frank Atkinson who created Beamish Museum for £1 a year to prevent its demolishment until the site for his planned museum was secured and it was relocated in the 1970's. Its relocation at Beamish mirrors closely its original position at Rowley, with the other relocated railway buildings closely echoing the site of them at Rowley, and the ground landscaped to suit. In particular, the footbridge from the town to the station mirrors that of the A68 road that crossed over the line at Rowley, and the signal box, from Carr House East near Consett, in the same position as the 1914 box at Rowley.

My current cigar cave is not a cave at all. In fact it has no semblance of a structure at all. My smoking area is known as the “Cigar Swing.” But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Like many married cigar smokers I respect my family by not smoking in the house (aka not allowed to smoke in the house). My first area was in the back yard with a portable fire pit and comfortable chair. But that was too close to the back door so I moved to another area which was also quite comfortable. Then my son-in-law deployed to Afghanistan and my daughter and granddaughter moved in. The 2nd smoking area was right below the baby’s window so I had to move again. Now I share a porch swing with a lawnmower, bike and woodbox. There’s no place for my fire pit or protection from the elements.
So whether I’m enjoying a Spanish Rosado in the morning or a Black Label in the evening the enjoyment is tarnished by my inability to fully relax or enjoy the moment with a friend.
My dream for my cave is to build a room (separate from the house) in my new location.
