Goal 7 of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals is: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. There are great parallels to be made with the International Space Station. All our energy is completely carbon free as it comes from these beautiful, large, solar panels. They have been providing all the electricity we need up here for 20 years, but we have a great advantage: no clouds, so they get the full effect of our Sun. However half of our 90-minute orbit around is in the shadow of Earth, so batteries take over for 45 minutes to keep the electricity flowing, and they are recharged when we fly back into sunlight. As energy up here is a limited resource, a list exists where each facility is placed in order of priority. Representatives from the five space agencies that run the International Space Station work together to make the list so if ever power dips the top-priority facilities continue to run. I hear that the discussions around this can be quite lively as nobody wants their facility turned off, but for over 20 years researchers and mission designers have worked it out together and energy is continued to be produced and distributed. Like many things on the Space Station this is a nice example of what needs to be done on Earth, but obviously on a much larger scale and nobody is saying it is easy. Meanwhile after 20 years of service, the solar panels are getting ready for an upgrade with spacewalks planned to install new ones in the Summer. We need to safeguard our future energy to make it sustainable and continuous, just like on Earth.

SU42-534 owned by Polregio climbs with its early morning regional train from Gdynia Główna to Hel. The steep grade up to Mrzezino often often makes the train, hauled by a de facto shunter locomotive, slow down to 20km/h or less.

Each day, Polregio deploys two SM42 or SU42 locomotives for its service between Chojnice, Gdynia and Hel and they are the last regularly running "loco+coaches" regio trains in Poland.

( ´∀`) A gift to Celebrate my Birthday from me too you 🎂 This is my Kettenkrad I’ve been working on for about 2-3 weeks it wasn’t as difficult to build as one may think and it’s very unique from the norm! From its steering wheels used for road wheels too it’s kinda funky solutions to adding mud guards over the front of the tracks! Very enjoyable build overall was happy to get the parts to finished the background from @valiantbricksofficial and using parts purchased at BrickFair Virginia in late July I was able to finish off the mid section!

I can always rely on KitKat to keep my sweatshirts warm!

Despite it being a rotten, old piece of crap, the CSXT 7793 leads CP 687 past Des Plaines at every bit of 5MPH. The crew seemed to not know how to use the ditch lights.

Reliably informed that it is the first sighting in the county(Northants)

Probably the only spot for decent light for a northbound on the Northcoast is right at CPF-241 in Rollinsford, NH where the Conway Branch peels off the Freight Main. The 3 GP38s take 28 empty hoppers back north to Ossipee this past Friday.

Multiple signs on this wall make it difficult to read. At the top there is painted lettering of "Old Reliable" and along the bottom in the same font it reads "For the Generations". The product for which this ad existed is covered by a newer "Bull Durham" painting.

Wouldn't want to overlook the metal "Washington Inn Pepsi Tap" sign. Pepsi on tap? I don't think so. The building that this sign is long gone.

There is a Falstaff Beer wall sign to the left of this ad. Look at the previous photo in my account to view that.

Since moving to the Grand Forks area, there have been three things I can count on while railfanning. One of them is that I will usually catch a train headed to or from Noyes, like this EMD-powered version a year ago. They might not always be headed into the sun but once in a while, they are.

1990's shot out west. Ford LTL, Ford LN and Freightliner with Stuart trailer loads of off-lease GMs. Maybe Chevy show cars.

Creativity has always been of a fickle, often elusive, friend of mine. Work, travel, schedules often conspire to drain my creative energy and prevent me from creating consistently. You can tell by the big time gaps in my uploads here. My posts often occur in bunches with long gaps between them.

I’ve had some time recently and I’ve really enjoyed creating these silly little composite images with my granddaughters. They love seeing themselves in these stories, and I love having this as something we can share. I know that a time will come when they won’t always want to spend time with me and they certainly won’t want to participate in these kinds of projects as they get older, so I’m gonna enjoy the ride as often as I can.

I know that composite images like this aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and many don’t consider them true photography, and that’s fair. I’ve just never wanted to lock myself into one kind of photography.

For those who’ve enjoyed these Halloween images, and provided feedback, I thank you. For those who really don’t enjoy photoshopped images, but have continued to view and follow my work anyway, I also thank you.

I truly appreciate you all!

NS 9474 C44-9W heads east through Duncannon, PA. Norfolk Southern owns more GE C44-9W's than any other type of locomotive (1083 to be exact). They were originally purchased as C40-9W's and recently all were upgraded with an additional 4,000 horses.

P42 #62 departs Glenview on Hiawatha 332 with a Siemens consist in place of a failed Charger.

One of my most unforgettable days was when I hiked up to the incredible mountain hut, Capanna del Forno. I must say that I was incredibly lucky. In Switzerland, a perfectly clear sky is a rare luxury, and when you're limited to weekends for your adventures, the odds drop even further. But every now and then, fortune smiles on you and this was one of those times.

After a solid hike, we finally reached Capanna del Forno. The setting took my breath away. So much so that I found myself speechless for a while. Standing there, surrounded by towering peaks and silence, I couldn’t help but wonder what this place must have looked like when the glacier was at its full glory, and when the hut was first built back in 1889.

As night began to fall, a quiet stillness settled over everything. Normally, I don’t bring my astrophotography gears onto the mountains. They are heavy and cumbersome for a steep ascent. But this day was an exception. The forecast had looked promising, so I packed my H-alpha modified Nikon D850 and the ever-reliable Benro Polaris.

Thank God I did.

Had I left them behind, it would have been a regret I would have carried for a lifetime. The night sky was simply magnificent. A stunning visual experience that felt almost surreal. I can only hope that the images I captured did justice to that moment. With any luck, they will serve as a lasting memory of one of the rarest and most perfect nights I have ever witnessed in the Swiss Alps.

In the process I also made a short film documenting the entire hike along with some useful information and that can be found below.

Is Hiking to Capanna del Forno CAS Worth the Breathtaking Views?

Have a nice weekend.

Hope you will enjoy the picture.

Any suggestions or criticisms are always welcome.

Ophrys insectifera, Karlschütt, Steiermark, Austria. I have found fly orchids mostly while not searching for them. At this place they occur on the same spot every year so I know what to expect.

Tufted titmouse, (Parus bicolor),carolina chickadee, (Parus carolinensis). The chickadee is being chased off by the titmouse from the feeder. Better view at large size.

Another look at one of the most reliable trains on Pan Am's system, SAPPI-4 heading back east from Waterville with the 7-day per week turn job that brings cars out of the mill down to the yard every morning and heads back in the afternoon nearly like clockwork.

The current Hinckley Branch diverges from the freight main at CPF 110 a couple miles east of Waterville and extends a bit over 9 miles compass north (railroad east) to the Sappi Fine Paper mill in the town of Skowhegan.

We chased them the full nearly 10 miles, and here they are crossing Kennebec St. at MP 3.3 in the village of Shawmut. At one time the Maine Central loaded out pulp wood here that was floated down river as far as the dam that was built sometime around 1880. This line is interesting in that it was built through here in 1856 as the 5 ft 6 in broad gauge Somerset and Kennebec Railroad. Once extending more than 18 miles to Skowhegan it was abandoned in 1971 except for the 3 miles from this point south. But four short years later about 7 miles was "an abandoned" to serve the new Scott Paper Somerset Mill that was being built on the very southern edge of the Skowhegan town line north of th village of Hinckley.

With GEs having taken over the Waterville-Northern Maine Junction turns this train is the last bastion of EMDs down east as a pair of company blue dip GP40-2LWs trundle along at a leisurely 10 mph.

I have been reliably informed, by the lady who knows about such matters, that Venice will feature in our 2024 travels. We last visited for a few days in October 2017 and it is one of the few places that we left and said we would definitely return to.

As the weather cools, it's always nice to have something to look forward to.

Taken with my digital Fujifilm X20

It also reminds me that I really should post up some more of my 2017 Venice pics! My attention span varies between that of a goldfish and a puppy, so I probably got distracted and moved on to something else!

Dynamic brakes howl away, as southbound Dakota and Iowa loaded rock train from Dell Rapids twists and turns off the BNSF at Canton, SD, heading to home rails on a sunny September morning. Two pairs made up the headend consist this fine morning, with a set of SD40-2s leading a set of GP39s.

The reliable schedule, along with clean and matching power make this shoreline an enjoyable break from the increasingly filthy, and ever decaying class one/conglomerate shortline operations around the country.

This Cuisinart food processor is over 30 years old, and still alive and kicking.

2025 has been a rather successful year on the train front for us, capturing thousands of images across a wide variety of branches, subdivisions and railroads. We've made so many new friends and I am one blessed man to stand here today and reflect upon it all. On New Years Eve, we photograph our final train as M652 thunders up the Clinchfield, led by the Old Reliable. We waded through the weeds of Dante Yard around ten minutes ahead of the train and watched as the classic display of yellow and grey rattled by on the approach to Sandy Ridge. There's something haunting about the rust and overgrowth that now calls Dante its home. From a bustling coal yard to a quiet crevice of the Clinchfield, the light fades on the last evening of the year while the freight rolls on.
