In the course of the centuries so much has been built, demolished and carpeted at Heeswijk Castle that medieval builders today would have great difficulty recognizing their castle. Heeswijk may be a construction history jumble, it is still a large, imposing and beautifully situated complex that can rightfully be considered as one of the important medieval castles of North Brabant.
To begin with, there is the respectable age of perhaps around 950 years. The history of Heeswijk Castle goes back at least to the first half of the twelfth century, and possibly even further, to the end of the eleventh century. First, a motteburcht arose on this site, that is to say an artificially raised hill, 6 to 7 meters high, between 25 and 30 meters in diameter and surrounded by a moat. A tufa stone reinforcement was built on that hill, probably in the form of a tower.
In the fourteenth century that tower was no longer sufficient. Then, in stages, the construction of the brick late-medieval castle began, of which considerable parts are still standing today.
However, Heeswijk is not only interesting because of its long history. Hein Hundertmark, who investigated the building history of the castle, points out that from that fourteenth-century rebuilding until well into the nineteenth century, Heeswijk was always at the forefront of architectural architecture. The owners and builders constantly led the way in adapting the castle to changing circumstances.
This applies to the ambitious fourteenth and fifteenth century construction phases, whereby the castle was adapted to, among other things, the development of gunpowder guns. But also for the sixteenth and seventeenth-century conversion of a defensible castle into a representative noble residence. All things considered, it is no less true of the romantic dream that inspired Baron Van den Bogaerde of Terbrugge and his sons in the nineteenth century to neo-gothic extensions and additions, including the incorporation of all kinds of building fragments into the exterior facades. Heeswijk also set a trend in this neo-gothic adaptation.
Only after the Second World War was this line of progressiveness broken. For the last owner, the architectural legacy of his nineteenth-century ancestors was an annoying "romantic madness." He wanted the castle to return to a sober medieval aesthetic. It is therefore all the more spicy that the restoration of Heeswijk, which had to bring about this, ended in a castle with a predominantly eighteenth-century appearance.

Constitué d’une dentelle de lettres majuscules en acier blanc, il se détache avec délicatesse sur le ciel généralement d’un bleu profond de la Côte d’Azur, évoquant une silhouette humaine aux formes courbes, assise devant la mer, une jambe repliée contre sa poitrine. Sa face est ouverte, les lettres s’y arrêtent soudainement, comme effacées par la beauté du paysage qu’il contemple.

Made up of a lace of uppercase letters in white steel, it stands out delicately on the sky generally deep blue of the Côte d'Azur, evoking a human figure with curved shapes, sitting in front of the sea, one leg folded against Her chest. Located at the northern end of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz Harbor is a haven for fishing craft and vessels. A harbor light, located at the west jetty, has marked its entrance for forty years. The original light was a box light structure which served from 1964 – 1996. It was replaced by a cylinder nicknamed “the water heater” which was used from 1996 – 1999. From 1999 until May 2002, a simple pipe structure held the light which marked the way into the harbor.
In 1998, the Santa Cruz community, under the leadership of Bill Simpkins and Jim Thoits, proposed replacing the unsightly harbor light with a lighthouse of classic design, adding a little more character to a community renowned for its characters. Fundraising efforts began in earnest, and with the contributions of many people, including a major donation from Charles Walton of Los Gatos, enough money was raised to begin construction of the new lighthouse in 2001.
The lighthouse, designed by Mark Mesiti-Miller and constructed by Devcon Construction, Inc., stands 41 ½ feet tall above the level of the west jetty, and 59 ½ feet above the mean low water mark. It weighs 350,000 pounds and is built to withstand a quarter million pounds of wave energy.
The construction began with a cylindrical inner core which houses electrical equipment and a circular staircase of forty-two steps which lead to the top of the lighthouse. Surrounding the inner core is a network of reinforcement rods, onto which “shotcrete” was blown and then hand-troweled to form the conical shape. These shotcrete walls are 4 ½ feet thick at the base. Finally, a durable weatherproof white finish was applied to the exterior of the lighthouse and a copper roofed lantern room topped it all off.
On June 9, 2002, the new harbor lighthouse was dedicated, and the signal, a green light flashing every four seconds at a focal plane of thirty-six feet, was activated. It is named the Walton Lighthouse, in honor of Mr. Charles Walton’s late brother, Derek, who served in the merchant marines and was lost at sea during World War II.

Mai 2023 konnte besagte Maschine vor dem KLV-Zug DGS 40656 von Episcopia Bihor nach Wanne-Eickel bei Wallersdorf in Niederbayern fotografieren. In der Vergangenheit wurde diese Leistung mit Vectrons von VTG Retrack bespannt. Der hier gezeigte Zug musste aufgrund von Bauarbeiten an diesem Tage einen Umweg über Landshut und München fahren.
The Hungarian company FOXrail received a reinforcement of its own locomotive fleet in the form of 193 966 in the fall of 2022. On May 29, 2023, said machine could be photographed in front of intermodal train DGS 40656 from Episcopia Bihor to Wanne-Eickel near Wallersdorf in Lower Bavaria. Organische Struktur
Die homogen gestaltete Fassade wirkt nicht nur leicht und transparent, sondern umgibt den geschwungenen Baukörper mit einer poetisch-organischen Hülle, die ihm Plastizität verleiht. Dabei erscheint sie nicht ornamental. Sie ist viel mehr als große organische Struktur entworfen, die den Anschein erweckt, als würde sie atmen. Es ging darum, eine „Haut“ als Fassade zu entwickeln, die licht- und luftdurchlässig ist. Die Schuppung steht für das Organ Haut. Assoziationen zur Natur, wie beispielsweise zu Libellenflügeln, sind erwünscht. Das Oberflächenrelief infolge der Auffächerung der Flügel bzw. Schuppen wirkt plastisch und atmungsaktiv. Die Fassadenhaut eignet sich besonders für geschwungene Grundrisskonturen. Ihre poetische Ausstrahlung enthebt das Parkhaus einem reinen Zweckbauniveau.
Konstruktive Umsetzung
Im Zuge der Formfindung musste ein Element gefunden werden, das einerseits konstruktiv und architektonisch die Rundungen der Fassade nachzeichnet, andererseits auch das Erscheinungsbild nach außen unterstreicht. Hierfür wurde eine Konstruktion gewählt, die auf dem Thema von Fischschuppen basiert. Für die Übersetzung dieses Prinzips wurden rund 3.000 lasergeschnittene Paneele mit Randverstärkung aus Lochblech gefertigt, welche über Schraubbolzen mit der darunterliegenden Pfosten-Riegel-Konstruktion aus Metall verbunden wurden. Die kiemenartigen Öffnungen sowie der Lochanteil der Bleche selbst gewährleisten dabei die notwendige, natürliche Durchströmung des Parkhauses mit Luft und zugleich die natürliche Belichtung des Innern. Durch die Überlappung der Bleche entstanden interessante geometrische Muster, die bei Dunkelheit eine sinnliche, zeichenhafte Symbolik entwickeln. Das Befestigungssystem erlaubt eine flexible Montage und Wartung der Paneele. Durch den Einsatz von Gewindestangen war die Montage aus verschiedenen Richtungen möglich. Unterschiedliche Winkel bei identischen Elementen konnten ausgeglichen werden.
organic structure
The homogeneously designed facade not only appears light and transparent, but also surrounds the curved building with a poetic-organic shell that gives it plasticity. It does not appear ornamental. It is designed much more as a large organic structure that appears to breathe. The aim was to develop a "skin" as a facade that is permeable to light and air. The scaling represents the skin organ. Associations with nature, such as dragonfly wings, are encouraged. The surface relief due to the fanning out of the wings or scales has a plastic and breathable effect. The facade skin is particularly suitable for curved floor plan contours. Its poetic charisma lifts the multi-storey car park from a purely functional level.
Constructive implementation
In the course of finding the form, an element had to be found that, on the one hand, structurally and architecturally traces the curves of the facade, and on the other hand underlines the outward appearance. A construction based on the theme of fish scales was chosen for this purpose. For the translation of this principle, around 3,000 laser-cut panels with edge reinforcement were made of perforated sheet metal, which were connected to the underlying metal mullion-transom construction with screw bolts. The gill-like openings and the perforated portion of the sheets themselves ensure the necessary, natural flow of air through the car park and at the same time the natural lighting of the interior. The overlapping of the metal sheets resulted in interesting geometric patterns that develop a sensuous, emblematic symbolism in the dark. The fastening system allows flexible assembly and maintenance of the panels. The use of threaded rods made assembly from different directions possible. Different angles in identical elements could be compensated.

THE CASTLE
The contours of the neo-gothic building rise more than about 330 ft above the river Moselle on an outstanding hill. The silhouette of the towering hill seems to continue in the building which is topped by the slate roof of the massive keep. As for its structure, Cochem Castle belongs to the category of castles protected by height that had to be protected all around. Romanesque fragments found in the well indicate a reinforcement of the castle around 1056.
Around this time or a bit earlier the core of the Romanesque square keep (17ft by 17ft) was built, its walls being up to 12ft thick. At the same time, the keep was also made higher. In the first half of the 14th century, archbishop Balduin of Trier connected the castle and the town by massive walls. Furthermore a chain was installed below the castle to form a removable toll barrier across the river.

The curved viaduct which is located in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands was built during 1897 and opened in 1901, the viaduct which carries a single railway line is made from mass concrete and has no metal reinforcement, which at that time was a feat of Victorian engineering.
There are a total of 21 arches spread out at 15m intervals, and it is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland at 380m in length, with the River Finnan 30m below.
Simpson and Wilson of Glasgow, were the engineers who oversaw the project, while the actual building of the viaduct was undertaken by Robert McAlpine & Sons, who later was nicknamed concrete Bob due to his innovative use of using concrete on mass.
The railway line, which forms part of the West Highland Line runs from Glasgow to Fort William then onwards to Mallaig, considered by many as the world’s most scenic railway journey. The actual viaduct was made even more famous as it has featured in the Harry Potter films. During the summer months a steam train service (The Jacobite) operates a return journey of 84 miles between Fort William, and the fishing port of Mallaig.

Neeltje Jans is an artificial island in the province of Zeeland, halfway between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland in the Eastern Scheldt tidal basin. It was constructed to facilitate the construction of the Oosterscheldedam [Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier], designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea.

Le métier de paludier est l'une des rares professions agricoles qui utilise une technique exempte de mécanisation et d'apport de produits chimiques.
Cette technique de production artisanale permet à la fois de produite un sel de qualité et de préserver un site exceptionnel.
Une passion au fil des saisons
Si le sel se récolte l'été, la récolte se prépare dès l'hiver et le bon fonctionnement d'une saline nécessite un travail tout au long de l'année : seul ou collectivement, le paludier adapte son travail au rythme des saisons.
L'HIVER
Pour protéger les salines du gel et des intempéries, le paludier les recouvre d'eau. Cette saison est entièrement consacrée au curage (rayage) des vasières, à l’entretien des talus (renforcement, coupe de la végétation) et au nettoyage des chenaux d’alimentation et d’évacuation ainsi qu’aux réparations éventuelles nécessaires en cas de dégâts survenus lors des tempêtes.
LE PRINTEMPS
Début mars, il faut vider (algir) les salines et les bassins de l'eau de pluie accumulée, puis évacuer la vase et les algues de chaque bassin tout en reconstituant les digues d’argile (ponts) qui constituent le circuit hydraulique de la saline. C’est aussi l’époque des travaux collectifs de réfection complète (chaussage), tous les 25 ans, d'un groupe d'œillets (lotie).
L'ÉTÉ
C’est la récolte de sel. 50 à 60 œillets sont en moyenne exploités par un paludier (ce qui représente une superficie de 3 à 4 ha) et nécessite de longues journées de travail. La production est cependant très variable en fonction de l’ensoleillement, des vents et de la pluviométrie.
L'AUTOMNE
Une fois le sel « roulé », c'est-à-dire mis à l’abri pour l’hiver, le rythme de travail ralentit jusqu’à mi-novembre. Une période de repos qui peut cependant être interrompue en cas de grande marée pour protéger les salines.
À Guérande, un paludier exploitant produit à lui seul, en moyenne, entre 60 et 90 tonnes de gros sel et de 2 à 3 tonnes de fleur de sel par an ! Mais cette récolte varie considérablement en fonction des conditions climatiques (de 0 à 200 tonnes de gros sel) !
Les outils du paludier
Les outils utilisés dans les marais salants ont peu changé au cours des siècles et sont restés, pour la majorité, en bois.
LE LAS
Muni d’un long manche flexible de 5 mètres de long, cet outil est le plus connu. Il sert à la récolte du gros sel.
LA LOUSSE À FLEUR DE SEL
Historiquement en bois, la lousse à fleur de sel sert à cueillir la fleur de sel à la surface des œillets. Il existe désormais des lousses plus élaborées à partir de matériaux modernes plus légers de qualité alimentaire.
LA BROUETTE
Elle est utilisée pour transporter le sel des ladures au trémet. Elle a remplacé au tout début des années 50 la gède, récipient de bois que les femmes portaient en équilibre sur leur tête avec un coussinet de toile enroulée, la torche. Les brouettes peuvent contenir de 120 à 150Kg de sel.
LA LOUSSE À PONTER
La lousse à ponter, en bois, comparable à la lousse à fleur de sel, se différencie par un manche plus court et plus gros. Elle est utilisée pour la réfection annuelle des ponts.
LE RATEAU À LIMU
Il sert à ratisser le limu, une algue qui pousse dans les marais.
LA CESSE (EN BOIS)
La cesse est une grande écope à bras qui sert à vider l’eau ou à jeter la vase.
LA BOYETTE (OU HOULETTE) (EN TÔLE D’ACIER)
C’est la pelle du paludier utilisée pour certains travaux d'entretien des marais salants.
LE BOUTOUÉ (EN BOIS)
De forme similaire à celle du las, il sert pour repousser la vase des fards et dans les œillets avant la récolte, afin d'assurer une grande propreté des fonds.

A profession - A passion
For centuries, salt workers have been the heirs and guardians of a unique heritage. To be a salt worker is to be a bit of a magician: extract the grain of salt from the drop of water.
The trade of salt worker is one of the rare agricultural professions which uses a technique free from mechanization and the addition of chemicals.
This artisanal production technique allows both to produce quality salt and to preserve an exceptional site.
A passion throughout the seasons
If the salt is harvested in summer, the harvest is prepared in winter and the proper functioning of a saltworks requires work throughout the year: alone or collectively, the salt worker adapts his work to the rhythm of the seasons.
WINTER
To protect the saltworks from frost and bad weather, the salt worker covers them with water. This season is entirely devoted to the cleaning (raking) of mudflats, to the maintenance of the embankments (reinforcement, cutting of vegetation) and to the cleaning of the supply and evacuation channels as well as any repairs necessary in the event of damage. that occurred during storms.
SPRING
At the beginning of March, it is necessary to empty (algir) the saltworks and the basins of the accumulated rainwater, then to evacuate the silt and the algae of each basin while reconstituting the clay dikes (bridges) which constitute the hydraulic circuit of the saline. It is also the time of collective work to complete repair (footwear), every 25 years, of a group of carnations (lotie).
SUMMER
This is the harvest of salt. 50 to 60 carnations are on average exploited by a salt worker (which represents an area of 3 to 4 ha) and requires long working days. Production is however highly variable depending on the amount of sunshine, winds and rainfall.
AUTUMN
Once the salt is "rolled", that is to say, put away for the winter, the pace of work slows down until mid-November. A period of rest which can however be interrupted in the event of a high tide to protect the saltworks.
In Guérande, a salt worker operator alone produces between 60 and 90 tonnes of coarse salt and 2 to 3 tonnes of fleur de sel per year! But this harvest varies considerably depending on weather conditions (from 0 to 200 tonnes of coarse salt)!

THE LAS
With a long flexible handle 5 meters long, this tool is the best known. It is used to harvest coarse salt.
SALT FLOWER LOUSSE
Historically made of wood, the fleur de sel lousse is used to pick the fleur de sel from the surface of carnations. There are now more elaborate pouches made from modern, lighter food grade materials.
WHEELBARROW
It is used to transport the salt from the ladures to the trémet. At the very beginning of the 1950s, it replaced the gède, a wooden container that women carried balanced on their heads with a cushion of rolled-up canvas, the torch. Wheelbarrows can contain 120 to 150Kg of salt.
THE LOUSSE TO PONTE
The wooden pontoon lousse, comparable to the fleur de sel lousse, is distinguished by a shorter and larger handle. It is used for the annual repair of bridges.
THE RAKE IN LIMU
It is used to rake limu, an algae that grows in swamps.
THE CESSE (WOODEN)
The ceasefire is a large handheld scoop that is used to empty the water or throw in the mud.
LA BOYETTE (OR HOULETTE) (IN SHEET STEEL)
It is the salt worker shovel used for some maintenance work in salt marshes.
THE BOUTOUÉ (WOODEN)
Similar in shape to that of las, it is used to repel the mud from the eyeshadows and in the eyelets before harvesting, in order to ensure a great cleanliness of the funds.

Setas de Sevilla ("Mushrooms of Seville") or Las Setas ("The Mushrooms"), initially titled Metropol Parasol, is a wooden structure located at La Encarnación square in the old quarter of Seville, Spain. It was designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer and completed in April 2011. It has dimensions of 150 by 70 metres and an approximate height of 26 metres and claims to be the largest wooden structure in the world. Its appearance, location, delays and cost overruns in construction resulted in much public controversy.
The structure consists of six parasols in the form of giant mushrooms, whose design is inspired by the vaults of the Cathedral of Seville and the ficus trees in the nearby Plaza de Cristo de Burgos. The Setas are organized in four levels. The underground level (Level 0) houses the Antiquarium, where Roman and Moorish remains discovered on site are displayed in a museum. Level 1 (street level) is the Central Market. The roof of Level 1 is the surface of the open-air public plaza, shaded by the wooden parasols above and designed for public events. Levels 2 and 3 are the two stages of the panoramic terraces (including a restaurant), offering a view of the city centre.
From the 19th century a market was located in the plaza, housed in a dedicated building. The building was partially demolished in 1948 in accordance with plans for urban renewal. The market itself remained, however, until 1973, when the rest of the dilapidated building was finally demolished. The land remained dormant until 1990, when the city decided to construct underground parking with space for a market on top. However, in the midst of construction, ruins dating to the Roman and Al-Andalus eras were discovered, and construction was frozen after an expenditure of 14 million euros. In 2004, the city decided to attempt to develop the area again, and opened an international competition to solicit bids.
Construction began on June 26, 2005, with an estimated cost of 50 million euros and a projected completion date in June 2007. However, unknown to the public, the project soon faced difficulties. By May 2007 engineering firm Arup informed the municipal authorities that the structure was technically unfeasible as designed, given that a number of structural assumptions had not been tested and the design appeared to violate the limitations of known materials. The wood used was birch, imported from Finland, because of its straight qualities. Much time was spent developing feasible alternative plans to buttress the structure, which themselves proved impractical because of the added weight. A feasible design using glue as reinforcement was finally settled on only at the beginning of 2009. By some estimates, due to delays, the total cost of the structure approached 100 million euros.

The Gothic-styled church is located on the site of the first Roman Catholic church ever built in Buffalo. The church is laid out in a Latin-cross floor plan and features a 245 ft octagonal Medina sandstone steeple with a Seth Thomas clock. Above the steeple rests a 72 ft pierced spire; the tallest open-work spire ever built completely of stone (without reinforcement) in USA.
Inside the church is a 1903 Kimball Organ, which is located in the choir loft

Yes, plastic can be blingy, too, at least in a blingy shape and topped by something sparkly, like this fun ring made of clear plastic and a purple glass stone. I had considered photographing this ring for other MM themes a few times before, but could never quite make it work – until now.
The setup was fairly simple: I placed the ring on a single hexagon of the shiny mirror tile with the warped surface (that tile no longer exists in its original shape, as I cut the reinforcement fabric apart to obtain single pieces that are easier to use in macro projects). Behind it, I placed the packaging of a recent order, a magnetic ring holder/stand for my phone. That packaging has a nice, iridescent coated pattern printed on the front side that sparkles in different colours depending on the angle of the light source. When I unwrapped the parcel the other day and noticed that pattern, I immediately thought "photo background!" – another item other people throw away but I keep as a photo prop ;)
I tried focus stacking to get all of the ring in focus, but I liked the single shot more because the background looked more organic. And for this scene, I also preferred a little blur on the ring. My light sources were the natural light photo lamp (from above) to illuminate the ring, and my two LED lamps placed to the left and right of the subject to bring out the colours and pattern of the cardboard packaging.

The coast of Almeria is full of small watchtowers. They are a series of watchtowers built in the 16th century on the Mediterranean coasts of Spain to defend them from attacks by Barbary pirates. They are located mainly in Alicante, Murcia, Almería, Granada and Málaga, as well as on the Andalusian Atlantic slope, in the provinces of Cádiz and Huelva. Some of them have their origin in previous constructions, especially Nasrid. In later centuries, some more reinforcement towers were built, as well as some interior towers to communicate the coast with the main cities of the interior. Most of these towers were in use until the 19th century. Nasrid watchtower, built between the 12th and 14th centuries and which would continue to be used as a watchtower during the 16th century.
La costa de Almeria esta llena de pequeñas torres de vigilancia. Son una serie de torres vigía construidas en el siglo XVI en las costas mediterráneas de España para defenderlas de los ataques de los piratas berberiscos. Se sitúan principalmente en Alicante, Murcia, Almería, Granada y Málaga, así como en la vertiente atlántica andaluza, en las provincias de Cádiz y Huelva. Algunas de ellas tienen su origen en construcciones anteriores, especialmente nazaríes. En siglos posteriores se construyeron algunas torres más de refuerzo, así como algunas torres interiores para comunicar la costa con las principales ciudades del interior. La mayoría de estas torres estuvo en uso hasta el siglo XIX.atalaya nazarí, construida entre los siglos XII y XIV y que se seguiría usando como torre de vigilancia durante el siglo XVI.
