Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport.
Designated as KC-30A, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) A330 MRTTs are equipped with both an Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) and two Cobham 905E under-wing refuelling pods. The aircraft are powered by two General Electric CF6-80E engines. Australia initially arranged to procure four aircraft with an option to obtain a fifth; this option for a fifth aircraft was exercised to allow for two simultaneous deployments of two aircraft, the fifth being for contingency coverage. Australian KC-30A are operated by No. 33 Squadron RAAF based at RAAF Base Amberley.[10] Australia's aircraft are configured for 270 passengers plus cargo.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Aaron Simonson (left) and Senior Airman Jason Trexler, both crew chiefs assigned to the 20th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, police their gear while performing hot pit refueling for F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots, Nov. 8, 2012, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. Hot pit refueling is a procedure usually performed in a combat situation to rapidly refuel aircraft while their engines are running, resulting in a speedy refuel to thrust pilots right back into the fight. Refueling specialists, crew chiefs and pilots assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing practice this procedure to keep their skills sharp and aid in the effort to provide combat-ready air power at a moment’s notice. Monarch Butterfly
Brooklyn, NY
Finally, a beautiful Monarch butterfly, presumably embarking back to its Mexican wintering spot. This specimen looks to be in fine form. It’s crazy to me that this is the first real chance I got today all year to even take decent photos of one of these (and not many opportunities either).
If you read my posts you may have noticed I’ve commented on the declining populations of many species of butterfly, the monarch just being one species well known and highly regarded by the public. It may come across as frivolous, but the truth is we hem and haw over the losses of lions and tigers, elephants and whales, etc. and for very good reason. However here we have delightful animals that literally live in our own backyards and the truth is there are things we can easily do to help them!
Butterflies and their caterpillars can only survive off of very specific plants, and they are specific to different kinds of butterflies. There are nectar plants that the adults feed from and host plants, which the caterpillars can only feed from. Many of the problems facing our local wildlife can be traced to the introduction of non-native plants to our area…plants that often are inedible to them. Take the effort to plant nectar and host plants in your own backyard! Call your local parks department and request that they put more effort into hosting valuable native plant species. If you have children, petition their school to plant nectar and host plants on the school grounds instead of fruitlessly landscaping with attractive yet essentially useless vegetation. Every little bit helps!
I've included a graphic list of nectar and host plants as organized by butterfly type. These are plants and butterflies common to the NY area and should work well for much of the Northeast. I borrowed this list from the New York Botanical Garden website and you can see that webpage here: www.nybg.org/…/home-garde…/tips/butterfly-gardens.php
The Native Plant Society of New Jersey also has a more intensive PDF list here: www.npsnj.org/…/Native_Butterfly_Plants_NJNPS_list2.…
