When I was looking over the images of the Lakenheath F-35s taken over the two days I visited in mid May a rather important detail suddenly struck me. The Luneburg radar reflectors had been removed from the five aircraft I saw. The four aerials are normally mounted on the aft fuselage, two above and two below. The upper left attachment point can just be made out in this image forward of the left vertical stabilizer. These are virtually always carried, even when operating in a potential combat theatre like Korea and Eastern Europe and all these airframes had previously been fitted only a few days before these photos. Interesting I have also heard that many at Hill AFB have recently been seen with the aerials removed.

This picture is #7 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Her name is pronounced M-a-r-l-e-e-n-a. I was tentatively trying to spell it and she quickly clarified, "Just like Marlene Dietrich!" I had been waiting for quite a while for a stranger opportunity when Marlene and Tim came upon my little staging area in Mingus Park, Coos Bay, Oregon. They both immediately agreed to participate and were so positive and patient. I was loving how the sun was filtering through a small stand of bamboo and positioned Marlene in front of it with her back to the sun. Tim was holding the reflector with the white side towards her. This really created some beautiful lighting. I love the way she crinkles her nose when she smiles!

With both Tim and Marlene, I tried something I had seen on a YouTube video about taking portraits: I asked them to look down and on my count of 1-2-3 look up into the camera. That resulted in some nice open-eyed looks whereas some of their previous shots had a bit of a eyes-half-closed look. I found it very helpful to watch the videos and see how photographers tell models what to do.

When we were interrupted by some people coming down the path, Marlene explained to them that I was doing an art project called Strangers in the Park, which I thought sounded really good! :) She is originally from Washington but is in Coos Bay for work reasons.

The mirrors were built in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an experimental early warning system for incoming aircraft, developed by William Sansome Tucker. Several were built along the south and east coasts, but the complex at Denge is the best preserved, and are protected as scheduled monuments.

There are three acoustic mirrors in the complex, each consisting of a single concrete hemispherical reflector. The 200 foot mirror is a near vertical, curved wall, 200 feet (60m) long. It is one of only two similar acoustic mirrors in the world, the other being in Magħtab, Malta. The 30 foot mirror is a circular dish, similar to a deeply curved satellite dish, 9m (30 ft) across, supported on concrete buttresses. This mirror still retains the metal microphone pole at its centre. The 20 foot mirror is similar to the 30 foot mirror, with a smaller, shallower dish 6m (20 ft) across. The design is close to that of an acoustic mirror in Kilnsea, East Riding of Yorkshire.

Acoustic mirrors did work and could effectively be used to detect slow moving enemy aircraft before they came into sight. They worked by concentrating sound waves towards a central point, where a microphone would have been located. However, their use was limited as aircraft became faster. Operators also found it difficult to distinguish between aircraft and seagoing vessels. In any case, they quickly became obsolete due to the invention of radar in 1932. The experiment was abandoned, and the mirrors left to decay.

The headlight division at auto manufacturers certainly earns its money.

Do you think we could use this foil as a reflector?

15 x 3-minute, manually off-axis guided exposures at f/4 and ISO 1600. Using more exposures helps reduce digital noise, so I also included 10 x 5-minute exposures taken in 2013.

Amazing reflections at Bow Lake, Jasper National Park, Canada.

The reflection isn't perfect but a strong breeze arrived within a minute after taking this shot, meaning this was the best image I was able to get.

I'll just have to go back one day for a better shot ;-)

An impressive lake with great reflection along the rv. 63 on the way to the Geiranger Fjord (Norway). First time I saw it, a cloudy day but without wind, I was totally impressed, like a breathtaking show out of the blue.

I came back here each day to get the best conditions, I wish I could catch a sunset or sunrise in this place, but unfortunately, not the right period to get the alignment…
