In the inner town of Khiva between the covered bazaar Tim and the Eastern gates Palvan Darvaza the tourists can visit Allakuli Khan Madrasah. Peopletravel Company is pleased to offer the unforgettable trip to Uzbekistan, mainly to Khiva where you will see the most outstanding historical monuments of medieval of Central Asia.

The madrasah was built by order and means of Allakuli Khan in 1834 – 1835. Allakuli Khan, in order to make Khiva one of the picturesque and attractive cities of Asia, implemented large constructive and well-planned works, proceeding from his possibilities. Having demolished decrepit and collapsing old madrasahs made from framework and adobe, he asked skillful masters of those times to build new madrasahs from baked brick.

Allakuli Khan Madrasah was started to build after the constructing of the bazaar Tim. Before the beginning of the construction one part of Ichan Kala wall, bordering upon Khodjamberdiy Madrasah, and several domes of Palvan Darvaza gates were pulled down. The remains of the walls were leveled and the portal of Allakuli Khan Madrasah was erected on this place. This portal is located facing the door way of the opposite Kutlug Murad Inak Madrasah. As a result on the newly formed square the traditional architectural form kosh (twin) madrasah was built. So the main facade of Allakuli Khan Madrasah overlooks the yard of Khodjamberdiy Madrasah.

The specialists mark the architecture of Allakuli Khan Madrasah as the Khorezm style of late medieval. But for the visitors this madrasah is the amazing construction, which astonishes people by its beauty and refinement. In the decor of Allakuli Khan Madrasah there is the painted majolica in black, white, blue tones, covering vertical surfaces, semivaults and over portal constructions.

The colour gamma and ornamental motives of the majolica are various everywhere. Depending on the place the artists and ceramists chose well the scale and type of the print, colour saturation of the pattern. The refined facade part of the portal, saturated with bright majolica impresses especially.

Undoubtedly, Allakuli Khan Madrasah has its memorizable fascination. It is often considered the most beautiful madrasah in Khiva.

Allakuli Khan Madrasah has the right-angled form with 99 cells. The portal is traditionally divided into two zones: the mosque is in the right part, and the large lecture room is in the left part.

Earlier on the first floor there was a library, which supported all students of Khiva with books.

Today the madrasah is the historical museum of medicine after Abu Ali ibn Sino.

The 1932 Marmon Sixteen epitomized luxury and power during the Great Depression. With its advanced V16 engine, producing 200 horsepower, it set new standards in performance and refinement. Its Art Deco styling and lavish interiors made it a symbol of opulence, coveted by elite clientele of the era.

🇫🇷 Oriel et bow window sont devenus des symboles d’élégance et de raffinement, particulièrement prisés dans les demeures bourgeoises et les constructions de prestige.

🇬🇧 Oriel and bow windows have become symbols of elegance and refinement, particularly prized in middle-class residences and prestigious buildings.

Unlike the oriel window, the bow window generally extends from floor to ceiling, forming a continuity with the level of the room it extends. This structure is made up of several identical windows, arranged in an arc to follow the curve of the whole,

Unlike the bow window, an "oriel" is a closed corbelled window incorporating an interior door, which can be likened to a mini veranda (also known as a greenhouse balcony), and is found in Alsace, for example.

Art in station architecture

Artwork Title:

Earth Song

Artist Name:

Fiona Wong (Hong Kong)

Artwork Location:

Sung Wong Toi

Artist's Concept:

Ceramics are guardians of history.

Archaeological finds unearthed at the site of the Sung Wong Toi station has revealed a historical time preserved in the strata of our soil. Among the relics are ceramics dating back to the Song Dynasty, a golden age of Chinese culture.

“Earth Song” pays homage to this period - a pinnacle of cultural refinement. Motifs and compositions from Song Dynasty paintings are given a contemporary treatment in two pairs of ceramic reliefs. Set against backgrounds of changing seasons and times of day, fluttering butterflies and rhythmic tides convey a poetic sensibility, and forge an imaginative link between historical literati and present-day commuters.

The extensive research, preparation and creative process behind the final art pieces are documented in a photographic collage along the corridors. All photographs, like the reliefs, are framed in circles, reminiscent of foot rings of ceramic vessels excavated at the site. These unassuming fragments illustrate natural exquisiteness and manifest the everyday aesthetics of a culture worthy of celebration.

These were developed from a series of five locomotives (2631–2635), introduced in 1902 by Samuel W. Johnson, which had had a 3-cylinder compound arrangement on the Smith system. This had a layout of one high-pressure cylinder inside the frames, and two low-pressure cylinders outside, and utilised Smith's starting arrangement. On the first two locomotives, independent control of high-pressure and low-pressure valve gears was available. From 1905 onwards, Johnson's successor Richard Deeley built an enlarged and simplified version, eliminating all the Smith refinements whilst fitting his own starting arrangement, making the engines simpler to drive. These locomotives were originally numbered 1000–1029, but in the 1907 renumbering scheme the five Smith/Johnson locomotives became 1000–1004 and the Deeley compounds 1005–1034, ten more of these being added in 1908–1909. The original Johnson locomotives were all subsequently renewed as Deeley compounds, including the now-preserved 1000 which was rebuilt and outshopped with a superheater in 1914.

Numbered 1000–1044 by both the Midland and LMS companies, British Railways renumbered the Midland series of compounds 41000–41044 after nationalisation in 1948.

No. 1000 was set aside for preservation after withdrawal and restored in 1959 close to its 1914 condition, painted in Midland maroon livery, running enthusiasts' specials until placed in the temporary Clapham Transport museum. Though steamed since preservation, it is currently a static exhibit at the Barrow Hill Engine Shed at Derbyshire, having been lent by the National Railway Museum in York.

A single shot star trail image of the November 8, 2022 total lunar eclipse was taken with a Minolta SRT-101, a Minolta Rokkor 58 mm f/1.2 lens. Fuji Chrome Provia 100F slide film was used for the exposure. Passing clouds provided diffusion during the early phases, gradually clearing as the moon set behind the trees in totality. Total exposure time was about 2.5 hours. The transparency was scanned with a Nikon Coolscan V with refinement in Lightroom.

Built around 1614 for Etienne Bouhier, Advisor to the Parliament of Burgundy, it is one of the most valuable parliamentary mansions built in the 17th century in France. Majestic entrance porch punctuated by bossages opening onto a courtyard with a sculpted portico. The classical and measured design of the building combines all the decorative refinement of the Italian Renaissance. Passed into the Vogüé family in 1766 and purchased by the City, it now houses the Human Resources Department of the city of Dijon.

Background: Salisbury House & Gardens, Des Moines, IA. Picture recorded at the Salisbury House Concours d’Elegance, September 6, 2012

The Car: Recorded at the British Car Fest, September 12, 2021, Harper Junior College, Palatine, IL

1926→1931 1927 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I

Like the Silver Ghost, Rolls-Royce of America, Inc. produced their US domestic Phantoms from Springfield, Massachusetts. These vary in detail from their English counterparts, but had the same successful engineering under their American bodies. Production began in 1926, one year after the English cars.

Many of the American cars came with bodies produced in house by Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork which unified the Springfield Phantoms somewhat. The purchase of Brewster & Co. in January of 1926 meant that many Phantoms were bodied in Long Island City in one of 26 distinct designs by Brewster’s designer, Carl Beck.

Like the English Phantom, the new model greatly updated the Springfield Silver Ghost chassis and running gear. It was Rolls-Royce of America’s flagship model until the Phantom II was released in 1929. Due to the high costs of factory tooling and the great depression, the Phantom II was produced exclusively in England.

Compared to the Silver Ghost, the single biggest upgrade was made to the engine which was cast in two blocks, each having three cylinders and detachable cylinder heads. With a pushrod, overhead valvetrain, the 7,668 cc unit was powerful enough to move around large cars. The engine’s under square engine could run smoother and a lower rpm with a favorable torque curve.

The reputation of Rolls-Royce had been established by the Silver Ghost; replacing it would be a daunting task. That substitute was the Phantom introduced in 1925. Built as a refinement of the earlier car, they in fact shared the same chassis. To further refine the driving experience, a new state-of-the-art OHV straight 6 engine was developed, along with a revised steering column mounting to reduce road shocks through the steering wheel. The new model continued to be built in both the UK and the US (as the Ghost had been) with manufacture in Derby and Springfield, Massachusetts. American production began in 1926 and continued two years after the model was replaced with the Phantom II in the UK in 1929.

There were a few differences in the cars built in the US, to better suit the American market. They included a shorter 'long wheelbase' model and a three speed rather than four speed transmission. The cars built in Massachusetts boasted the same level of impeccable workmanship, quality of materials and integrity of design and engineering that had established Rolls-Royce from the beginning. To further address American driving conditions, the Springfield cars featured a one-shot lubrication system, disposable oil filter, carburetor air cleaner and thermostatic radiator shutters. The Springfield Phantom enjoyed good sales during the last years of the Roaring Twenties, with about 300 cars delivered in the US in both 1927 and 1928.Power was send to the rear wheels though a torque tube. A complex system of levers and suspension required constant oiling to as many as 50 separate points. The standard chassis was 143.5 inches long and a long wheel base model 150.5 inches. Other upgrades from the Phantom included a disc-type clutch and adjustable radiator shutters.

Throughout production, the Phantom was upgraded in detail such as the cylinder which was cast in aluminum from 1928 onward.

I've always enjoyed seeing aerial views of farmland. The fields tend to layout like a patchwork quilt when viewed from the air. All the same, yet all different, depending on how closely you look at it. You can spot individual fields if you look hard, or just let the entire scene become a mosaic. I get much the same sense as I drive around the countryside, seeing things at eye level. Individual farmhouses and barns come into view then recede. Individually all unique, but collectively it's just rural America. Part of the allure is the "roadside" experience...taking in that which can be sen from a car without actually stopping. There's a bit of disconnect because the experience is mostly just visual, yet it is enriching nonetheless. I've gotten into this weird habit of shooting in what I call 'drive by' mode. The camera is pointing blindly out the side window, and photos are snapped (usually in burst mode) without even a hint at composition or framing. In fact the latest refinement of the technique involves not even looking off to the side. This ensures the results are completely random and spontaneous. And there's that (for me) delightful feeling of being on a boundary line, here the one that separates motion from still life. In this view, a quintessential Ohio farmhouse was captured from side view camera at approximately 60 mph! The gambrel roof is highly suggestive of barn architecture and I wonder if the house might have been converted from one. What I love about shots like this is that every pixel plays a role in telling the story, and not one is wasted. Even the idyllic summer sky was captured in total clarity. Like a photo of summer itself!

**New Ulm Post Office** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 70000287, date listed 4/28/1970

Center St. and Broadway

New Ulm, MN (Brown County)

The New Ulm Post Office building was built in 1909 and is still in use. It is excellently preserved.

The original exterior design and construction of the building are singularly unique. The structure is of alternating courses of deep red rough brick and grey-white terra cotta stone, a manufactured concrete stone. Below the firBt floor, the exterior wad-ls are of brick and granite to the ground level. The unique character of this building results primarily from the unusually steep roof, flanked by the stepped gable and dormer ends. It lacks grace and refinement yet is brutally dramatic.

The building reflects the origins of the founders of New Ulm in 1854. These first settlers came from Europe. They were skilled artisans, expert stone masons and brick workers. In their structures in the vicinity of New Ulm before the turn of the century they adapted various elements of design from their homelands, as well as adding innovations of their own creation. They expressed their individuality in methods of construction; ornamentation, and design. No pure style emerged in their buildings, but a "New Ulm" style is discernible in their work from the 1860's to about 1900, The post office exterior reflects the same freedom in design as well as the predominant background of the settlers. Funds for the Post Office in New Ulm were approved by Congress in 1906, and the site was purchased the same year. Originally the appropriation was for $30,000. (1)

One of the renowned artists, Richard Chavez was born and raised in San Felipe Pueblo, one of the more conservative and traditional Pueblos of New Mexico. As the founder of Chavez Studio, Richard has become known to his collectors as a lapidary artist with deep foundations in refinement of design, dramatic styling, and pristine craftsmanship. Richard is constantly in a process of elevating his craft by seeking out new materials of the highest quality, by experimenting with new polishing techniques to meet his exacting standards, and by constantly refreshing his line of designs. I'm just back home from the incredible Austria Flickr meet-up. It has been a wonderful week within the most perfect surroundings and with so many lovely people. I don't know how to manage to wake up tomorrow and to realize that there aren't 19 photography-addicted people around to have breakfast with and then start a daily adventure through the mountains. I can't remember the last time I was so productive and in love with photography. We have seen so many incredible places during that week and I had the pleasure to meet truly wonderful people.

There are so many photos to come but this photo sums up perfectly how calm and beautiful the nature was and how free I felt.

Ikebana (生け花?, "arranging flowers") is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as kadō (華道?, the "way of flowers"). The tradition dates back to the 7th century when floral offerings were made at altars. Later they were placed in the tokonoma alcove of a home. Ikebana reached its first zenith in the 16th century under the influence of Buddhist teamasters and has grown over the centuries, with over 1000 different schools in Japan and abroad. The best known schools are Ikenobo, Ohara-ryū, and Sōgetsu-ryū.

Kadō is counted as one of the three classical Japanese arts of refinement, along with kōdō for incense appreciation and chadō for tea and the tea ceremony.

Lime rock 2019, a 1962 Mercedes Benz 300D Adenaur W189

The Mercedes-Benz W189 model 300 was a four-door luxury tourer produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1957 and 1962. The company's largest and most prestigious automobile, it was the Maybach of its day – Elegant, powerful, exclusive, and expensive.

Marketed as the Type 300d, it was equal in features and price but superior in performance to the rival Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.[3] Favored by statesmen and business leaders, it offered options such as a glass partition, VHF mobile telephone, and dictation machine.

All but hand-built as the company flagship, the 300d is often identified as an Adenauer after Konrad Adenauer, the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, who employed six custom cabriolet, hardtop saloon, and landaulet versions of the W189 and its precursor W186 series during his 1949-1963 tenure. Among the custom features in these "parade cars" were writing desks, sirens, curtains, dividing partitions, sunroofs, and half-roof "landaulet" configurations.

Technologically advanced, the fuel injected 3.0 L inline-6 "Type 300" was regarded as a "driver's" car, sharing numerous design innovations and mechanical components with the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing", including engine, suspension, and chassis. It was succeeded by the 6 L W100 Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser Mercedes in 1963.

A successor to Mercedes' flagship W186 series final model, the 300c, the enlarged 300d (W189) was introduced in August 1957. Its new chassis code reflected sweeping refinements that included modernized bodywork, pioneering fuel injection, and a unique hardtop configuration transforming it into a pillarless phaeton.

Available as both a saloon and cabriolet, it retained the W186's proven X-frame chassis and was fitted with a more powerful version of its 3.0 L (2996 cc/182 in³) overhead cam, aluminum head M186 straight-6, the M189.

This shared improvements proven in the iconic 300SL "Gull Wing", the fastest production car of its day, including Bosch mechanical direct injection and an innovative diagonal head-to-block joint that allowed for oversized intake and exhaust valves. Output was an even horsepower per cubic inch, 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) at 5500 rpm.

Designed to give reliable service under prolonged hard use, the engine featured deep water jackets, thermostatically controlled oil cooling, copper-lead bearings and a hardened crankshaft. A 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission was standard. With no natural cruising speed, the car could sustain anything up to its maximum speed all day, road conditions permitting.

The combination of a rigid X-shaped ovoid steel tube frame and four-wheel independent suspension provided surprisingly nimble handling. Double wishbones, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar were used up front, and Mercedes' typical double coil spring swing axle in rear. An innovative dashboard-operated rear load-leveling suspension engaged a torsion bar to increase stiffness by one-third when needed, and a pedal-operated central lubrication system kept friction points silent.[3] Brakes were vacuum-assisted hydraulic drum all around, steering recirculating ball. Power steering and Artic-Kar air-conditioning were new options.

An additional 4 inches of wheelbase provided greater rear legroom, equaling that of the long wheelbase model Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud also introduced that year. Removable rear quarter lights allowed an unobstructed view in and out from the front vent window on back, much valued in the model's popular role as a "parade car".

A total of 3,077 300d models (priced at DM 27,000) was produced through March 1962, along with 65 special-order 300d-based Cabriolet Ds (DM 35,500). After some overlap with the smaller, more contemporary styled W112 chassied 300SE that shared its engine, the 300d limousine was ultimately replaced as company flagship in 1963 by the 600 pullman "Grand Mercedes".
