An excursion along the San Luis Central is getting set to leave Monte Vista, CO for a run up the SLC's line. Riders are boarding the makeshift coaches, consisting of some of SLC's reefers.

Train of the Day

2/7/23

GTW eastbound excursion behind 2-8-2 (4070) passes 18th St. on C&WI. Should be 16th Street Tower in right background, with signal bridge on IC Iowa line to the right of that. Bascule bridge is on "St. Charles Air Line." Okay, I'm not sure whether or not that is the 16th Street tower (where the C&WI crossed the NYC/Rock Island tracks out of LaSalle Street Station), but I'm going to let it stand. Someone who has more knowledge of this angle could offer a correction or confirmation. I do know that these tracks, that yard, and those reefers are gone! This area is now, I believe, a nice looking place called "Ping Tom" Park; it is very close to "Chinatown." A lot more pleasant for the average person, but a lot less gritty feel than I was used to seeing in the "Toddlin' Town." I miss it.

"Reefer" A temperature controlled refrigerated van, truck or semi-trailer.

Stacks of refrigerated containers, or reefers waiting at the port of Hampton Roads. The pattern of these stacked containers makes for interesting, almost abstract image.

Benched from the bus

A nice, long block of reefers, filled with Washington state produce (thanks Nick!) heads east on the Union Pacific near Malta, Illinois. The headlights in the distance are those of a stack train that is proceeding nice and slow past it's red signal...

Buque frigorífico "Swan Chacabuco", llegando al puerto de Castellón por la tarde para cargar naranjas con destino a Estados Unidos.

Reefer vessel "Swan Chacabuco" arriving at Castellón port in the afternoon to load oranges for USA.

I finished building these BMR SLRX reefer cars yesterday and I think they are just so neat.

For these I went for the printed parts, and man are those nice. I got a couple decal sheets for the Liberty Bonds scheme as well, but those'll have to wait for some budget before I can get to them.

I really like how they look paired with #2926 on my shelf, as well. Definitely anachronistic with the CE-6 caboose, but I don't mind.

Can't wait to get more cars built.

BNSF's Rochelle based local is doing some industry work around town, preparing a cut of reefer cars for Delmonte on the West side of town.

FATSO

SOLID COLD

BNFE 12423

This is the infamous FATSO Solid Cold from Reefer Madness. It is also the last Solid Cold. It rolled into the scrap yard this morning (3/8/2010). Me and the crew got to bench this before it went to the scrapper. This is a stitched panorama made from 8 original photos.

To all those who made this catch possible, THANK YOU.
