The reef

DSCF0034

Continuing our tourist trip to Cairns on our last full day in Australia we visited the Great Barrier Reef. This shot was taken from a glass bottomed boat taking a tour over the coral. Obviously this was taken through glass so the quality isn't that great but hopefully you still get an impression of the coral and the seabed.

Sometimes it's all a matter of timing. In Palau when the tides are low, very low, in certain areas reefs and beaches can appear, miles from the nearest land. And when the tide rises once again, reef and beach vanish under the surface. This is along German Channel where we pulled up and had lunch between dives. Shortly after taking this an eel swam by in 6 inches of water. Simply an amazing site. We got lucky that the tides were so low that day as they were not expected to be that low again in some time.

The water was choppy so the clarity wasn't the best. But it made for some nice light rays.

Final concurso miss reef (Reñaca)2003

Went to Long Reef this morning, the sun and clouds did not disappoint, the show went on for about 45 min or so. This was one of the weirdest and yet beautiful sunrises that I have ever seen.

From our hotel we went snorkelling on the Mayan Reef. I tried taking some underwater pictures using a camera in what is basically a plastic bag.

This didn't work that well as the pressure of the water on the bag interfered with the autofocus. However for a few pounds it did allow me to get some pictures of our day out, even though they aren't very good

The Eureka Reef Gold Mines consists of a range of mining sites documenting quartz and alluvial gold mining operations carried on from the mid 1850s to 1950s. The focal point of the precinct is the Eureka Reef glory hole and its associated cluster of stamping batteries and habitation sites. This clustering is the best surviving example of early quartz mining technology and settlement recorded in Victoria
