Since Earth Day I've decided to be a little "greener." I always take my plastic bags back to Walmart to recycle, but today I bought 4 reusuable bags and will buy more the next time. I really hate the plastic bags.... especially when they just put a few things in each and you come home with tons of bags. My 4 new bags were stuffed full today and it felt so good!

Upgrading the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery will create more than 40 jobs while improving the facility to reduce operating costs and help protect it and Alberta’s lakes, rivers and streams from disease.

A total of $10.3 million will be invested in a refurbishment that features construction of a new recirculating aquaculture system and upgrades to key operating and mechanical systems. This refurbishment will allow for the reuse of water during operations, which will significantly reduce utility costs and water use.

“Alberta’s government is taking action now to get folks back to work while ensuring our province can continue to grow in the years to come. Stocked fisheries generate more than $166 million in economic activity each year in our province. Investments in provincial fish hatcheries support the significant economic role fishing has in the province – and will get Albertans back to work.” said Premier Jason Kenney, during the announcement at the fish hatchery in Cold Lake, Alberta on Thursday, August 6, 2020. Truscott Brine Lake (Mountain Boomer Lizard)

Located in north Texas, this reservoir is part of the Red River Chloride Control Project, which was designed to reduce chloride contamination in the region.

Many, many, many years ago much of the area that is now north Texas, western Oklahoma, and southwestern Kansas was a large inland sea.

While the saltwater ocean is now gone, the salt remains, and natural springs pump thousands of gallons of saltwater into the area’s rivers and streams.

The challenge of the Red River Chloride Control Project is to significantly reduce the Red River's salinity to make the area’s water usable.

Many assume we remove the salt from the river water, but we don’t. The saltwater is actually diverted to Truscott Brine Lake where it evaporates.

That diversion is a fascinating process that begins more than 20 miles above the lake at a dam site and pump station.

There, an inflatable dam – basically a big rubber bladder – sits on a concrete weir that crosses the river.

During dry times, the dam is inflated to capture saltwater from the springs that flow into the river. The water then travels through a 22-mile pipeline that traverses the rugged and rocky west Texas terrain.

First it's pumped seven miles uphill to the highest elevation. From there, gravity carries the water downhill to an evaporation spray field, where the water is released from the pipeline through 40 spray nozzles. This spray process provides a higher evaporation rate than that which would occur if the water were just allowed to flow out of the pipeline and into the lake. The evaporation field is often a field of rainbows; it’s an unusual, quite alluring sight with haunting sounds.

All the saltwater that doesn’t evaporate at the spray field then makes its way into Truscott Brine Lake. The deep blue water of the lake has more salt content than the ocean. It’s even home to some saltwater fish!

Cambodia is one of the most natural disaster prone countries in Asia. Hazards such as flood, storms and typhoons regularly affect the country during the monsoon season (June to November), which has a significant economic and social impact. To raise awareness and promote disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures, Plan Cambodia oranised a series of events in Srei Snam district, Siem Reap Province.

Participants gathered together to listen to speeches made by children on climate-related disasters and DRR measures followed by a question and answer session. The children, youths, adults and local leaders then took part in a parade along the road through 2 villages in Srei Snam district, Siem Reap. In total 130 people took part in the events with about 1,200 people hearing their messages from their homes.

On this day in 1923, the U.S. Patent Office grants Patent No. 1,475,074 to 46-year-old inventor and newspaperman Garrett Morgan for his three-position traffic signal. Though Morgan's was not the first traffic signal (that one had been installed in London in 1868), it was an important innovation nonetheless: By having a third position besides just "Stop" and "Go," it regulated crossing vehicles more safely than earlier signals had.

Morgan, the child of two former slaves, was born in Kentucky in 1877. When he was just 14 years old, he moved north to Ohio to look for a job. First he worked as a handyman in Cincinnati; next he moved to Cleveland, where he worked as a sewing-machine repairman. In 1907, he opened his own repair shop, and in 1909 he added a garment shop to his operation. The business was an enormous success, and by 1920 Morgan had made enough money to start a newspaper, the Cleveland Call, which became one of the most important black newspapers in the nation.

Flora Badanoy, 39. Flora lives in a small coastal village on the Guiuan peninsula in Eastern Samar – the very first place to be hit by the typhoon. “We were not expecting the typhoon to be that strong,” she says. “We didn’t realise it was a special typhoon. We were warned that there would be a storm surge, but we didn’t know what the words meant.”

The typhoon hit at midnight and lasted for six hours. Flora and her family were taking shelter at a neighbour’s house, which was made of concrete. The roof was blown off, and then the storm surge hit: sea-water crashed in through the window. “I told the children to stay calm,” says Flora, “but one of them fainted in fright.”

Fortunately the water didn’t rise beyond knee level, and the family survived. In the morning, when they went outside, the wreckage was spectacular: palm trees had been snapped in half, fishing boats destroyed, and the village reduced to piles of debris. Power supplies and phone-lines were down. With roads and bridges blocked to the west, it would take days before any aid arrived.

Flora’s own home was almost completely destroyed: only one wooden post remained. The family’s clothes had been swept away and their few remaining possessions were soaked.

After months of living in temporary shelters, life is returning to normal for Flora and her family. Thanks to CORDAID, they have moved into a new home that’s designed to withstand future typhoons.

“I am very thankful to CORDAID to have received a house,” she says. “My next baby is due in September. It will be a new start for the family.”
