Winter time can be a feast for owl shots

& no complaints they are beautiful animals

Photographically though you end up with many many shots that are more or less the same

So it gets to a point where you're looking for something different...

Hopefully these two are that something different

A life long vocation for the flaming owl.. scouring fields for food

After lots of hovering and diving they usually emerge from the long grass with something

The concept of boredom probably never occurs to them., it's a necessity for their survival

But you cant help but wonder if every now and again they think., 'oh no! Not again!!'

Redshift and blueshift are shift in the observed frequency of visible light due to relative motion of the source and the observer.

For redshift, the sources and the observer are relatively moving away from each other, and the Z value is positive.

For Blueshift, the source and the observer are moving towards each other, and the Z value is negative.

The Deer Lick Galaxy, NGC7331, is a spiral galaxy around 40 million light years away in the constellation Pegasus. While most spiral galaxies have spiral arms that rotate in unison, the Deer Lick Galaxy's arms rotate in an opposite direction to the central region, and is probably caused by infalling material. The Deer Lick galaxy is one of the brighter galaxies at magnitude 10.4, and has several smaller galaxies appear close to it. However, these galaxies are roughly 10x farther than NGC7331.

Stephan's Quintet is a grouping of 5 galaxies, one of which is much closer to us at 40 million light years than the other four which lie around 300 million light years. The farther galaxies appear more yellow due to the increased redshift from the expansion of the universe.

M63, the beautiful Sunflower Galaxy in Coma Berenices. Many large clusters of galaxies are visible, including very distant Quasars. I found one to have a redshift of 1.8, which - with a Hubble constant of approx 68 would mean we see back in the past by about 10 billion years.

Takahashi Epsilon 180ED, ASI2600MC, 11 hour exposure.

This spiral galaxy is located in the direction of Coma Berenices. A type II supernova went off in this galaxy some time ago (SN 1941a). Several papers estimate its apparent magnitude was 13 and absolute magnitude to be around 15.7. From this astronomers would estimate this galaxy to be between 20-30 million light years away. Like many nearby spiral galaxies, NGC 4559 displays bright star-forming regions and dust lanes in its expansive arms. There are also a number of background galaxies and galaxy groups in this image. (Note: by using redshift measurements- the galaxy is 35 million light years distant which is not in terrible disagreement with the SN data.) (Text: www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/observers/n4559.html)

The Hickson 93 Galaxy Group, also referred to as Arp 99, can be found in the constellation Pegasus. From the Atlas of Compact Groups of Galaxies (1993), Paul Hickson stated, “This group (Arp 99) consists of an accordant quartet plus a fainter high-redshift galaxy. The bright spiral galaxy has two long plumes which result from tidal interaction. It is a radio and infrared source. The bright elliptical galaxy is also a radio source.”

This grouping is about 265 million light years away, five main galaxies are shown in the image, but only four are thought to be gravitationally bound and strongly interacting. You can see in the image how NGC 7549 is distorted by gravity, slowly pulling away strings of stars and gas.

The particulars on the galaxies shown are:

NGC 7549, magnitude 13.8, barred spiral galaxy.

NGC 7550, magnitude 13.6, lenticular galaxy.

NGC 7547, magnitude 14.7, barred spiral galaxy.

NGC 7553, magnitude 15.3, elliptical galaxy.

NGC 7558, magnitude 16.0, spiral galaxy.

"In vino veritas

Round, round with the glass, boys, as fast as you can,

Since he who don't drink cannot be a true man.

For if truth is in wine, then 'tis all but a whim

To think a man's true when the wine's not in him.

Drink, drink, then, and hold it a maxim divine

That there's virtue in truth, and there's truth in good wine!" (Benjamin Cooke)

Stephan's Quintet is a visual grouping of five galaxies of which four form the first compact galaxy group ever discovered. The group, visible in the constellation Pegasus, was discovered by Édouard Stephan in 1877 at the Marseille Observatory. The group is the most studied of all the compact galaxy groups. Wikipedia

Note 1:

If you are wondering where the five galaxies area and can only count four, the structure in the upper right-hand position which looks like a smiling face is actually composed of two galaxies interacting together - NGC 7318A and NGC 7318B.

Note 2:

Redshift - Stephan's Quintet => Hickson Quartet

NGC 7320, the blue-ish spiral galaxy in the lower left has a redshift of only 790 km/s, while the other four galaxies exhibit a much larger redshift of approx. 6600 km/s. Since galactic redshift is proportional to the distance from Earth, NGC 7320 is actually not part of this grouping but only appears that way. It is located in front of the other four by about 39 million light years from Earth versus the 210-340 million light years of the other four. This has caused some astronomers to call the other four the "Hickson Quartet" rather than Stephan's Quintet.

Just a cool spiral galaxy with some intense tidal disruption going on.

Data from the following proposal is used to create this image:

Establishing HST's Low Redshift Archive of Interacting Systems

All channels: ACS/WFC F606W

North is 32.0° clockwise from up.

The twin galaxies NGC 4496A and NGC 4496B dominate the frame in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Both galaxies lie in the constellation Virgo, but despite appearing side-by-side in this image they are at vastly different distances from both Earth and one another. NGC 4496A is 47 million light-years from Earth while NGC 4496B is 212 million light-years away. The enormous distances between the two galaxies mean that the two are not interacting, and only appear to overlap because of a chance alignment.

Chance galactic alignments such as this provide astronomers with the opportunity to delve into the distribution of dust in these galaxies. Galactic dust – the dark tendrils threading through both NGC 4496A and NGC 4496B – adds to the beauty of astronomical images, but it also complicates astronomers’ observations. Dust in the universe tends to scatter and absorb blue light, making stars seem dimmer and redder in a process called “reddening.” Reddening due to dust is different from redshift, which is due to the expansion of space itself. By carefully measuring how dust in the foreground galaxy affects starlight from the background galaxy, astronomers can map the dust in the foreground galaxy’s spiral arms. The resulting “dust maps” help astronomers calibrate measurements of everything from cosmological distances to the types of stars populating these galaxies.
