Birmingham has some claim to being the "first" redbrick university - as I'm sure most do. Either way, I quite enjoyed just bringing out the redbricks in this otherwise fairly uninteresting photo...

Built in 1860, the former Kildare Street Club was designed by Sir Thomas Newenham Deane (1828-1899), who was born in Cork; his father was also a noted architect and educated at Trinity College Dublin. He joined his father’s practice in 1850 and was made a partner the following year along with Benjamin Woodward. The firm then developed a gothic style based on the naturalistic principles as laid down by John Ruskin. This was to result in the practice playing an important role in the gothic revival in England. Their two most important building were the Museum building at Trinity College (1854-57) and the Oxford Museum (1854-60) in England. They also designed the Kildare Street Club in Dublin – interiors now mainly destroyed. In later years after the death of Woodward, Deane continued to practice as an architect and formed a partnership with his son Thomas Manly Deane (T.M. Deane) in 1878. This practice was responsible for the design and building of the National Library and Museum complex beside Leinster House. He was knighted in 1890.
The Dublin branch of the Alliance Française is the third biggest in Europe and the first established in a non-French speaking country. The branch has more than a century of history, but has existed in its current form for fifty years.
Ideally located at the corner of Nassau and Kildare Street in a listed Irish Heritage site, the Alliance Française Dublin is less than five minutes’ walk from a range of Dublin Bike ranks, bus stops, taxi ranks, Luas and Dart stations. The Alliance Française even has its own café on the premises, which is open to the public: bright and spacious, La Cocotte Café doubles as an exhibition space for an ever-changing array of interesting contemporary artworks, and is the perfect place to stop off while exploring the nearby museums.

The Nave & McCord Mercantile Company was headquartered here and then was replaced by a seed company. Nave & McCord Mercantile Company was established in 1846 under the firm name of Nave & McCord. In 1857, Nave, McCord & Co. began an exclusive wholesale grocery business, and in 1880 incorporated as he Nave & McCord Mercantile Company. Their expanding business required a large facility which was built in 1882 at 310 S. Third Street. The company also operated the "Mokaska Mills", originally a coffee roasting and distributing plant, which soon expanded to the manufacturing of flavoring abstracts, baking powders, ground, spices, and a general line of grocers' and druggists' sundries. The building was designed in 1882 by E.J. Eckel.
This is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore now. Notice again the covered windows. All of these warehouses must be so dark inside, yet they were designed to maximize the light and ventilation.
