Kentwell - a very different experience: a romantic, completely moated, mellow redbrick Tudor mansion in a tranquil parkland setting - but so much more.

A 30+ years Restoration Project

In 1970 Kentwell stood neglected. No-one was prepared to take it on - except Patrick Phillips. He fell for this wonderful House in its magical setting and was not deterred by its condition. Ever since then he has, with his wife and family, sought to bring Kentwell back to life. Their works have taken part of the House and its 15th Century Service Building back to the 16th Century. Elsewhere changes reflect their own preferences. House, Gardens & Farm have an unrivalled ability to captivate the visitor.

Take a glimpse into both the past and present of this unique House. Enjoy its delightful Gardens. You can do this whenever you come but especially if you visit during one of the award-winning Re-Creations of Tudor or WWII Everyday Life and (recently) Victorian life. Kentwell pioneered Tudor domestic Living History Events in the UK, and nearly 30 years on the Re-Creations are as magical as ever.

At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture.

Today the “mansion of labour” in the west of Dortmund is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. The engine house with its famous Jugendstil doorway is already an icon.

The Parish Church of St. John the Divine became redundant about five years ago, and is now used as some kind of youth theatre group, I believe.

The Church opened in 1882, and is Grade 2 listed.

In 1882 the new Parish of St. John The Divine, Gainsborough was formed from the Southern half of the Parish of Holy Trinity. The church, which has been disused for about five years now, is an austere, large redbrick building, apparantly designed to have a tower that was never built. It had attached to it a school that closed during the mid 1970s and a clergy house "Vigilans" to house a company of celibate priests. The interior of the Church was long, spacious with tall arcades, and featured a statue of St. John originally made for an exhibition in Chicago.

The building is Grade C listed (equivalent to Grade II)

Berkeley has a few buildings with fine moulded bricks and terra cotta ornaments. The glossy red on this one is particularly good. It wasn't sandblasted all to crap...

The Kremlin's magnificent redbrick walls form an irregular triangle around Moscow's ancient citadel and are 2,235 meters in length, 19 meters high and up to 6.5 meters thick. They are topped with swallow-tailed crenellations and defended by 18 separate towers, most of which were built at the end of the 15th century by the Italian architects Marco Ruffo, Pietro Antonio Solari and Alevisio Novi. The distinctive jade-green spires of the towers were added in the 17th century and their crowning ruby-red stars in 1937. Each tower has its own name and fascinating history and the Kremlin wall itself tells the intriguing story of Moscow during the 20th century.

In front of the Kremlin walls stands the cubist bulk of Lenin's mausoleum and behind it visitors are led past a mass grave of Bolsheviks who perished during the battle for Moscow in 1917 and the graves of an array of Soviet notables, including those of Lenin's wife Nadezhda Krupskaya and his lover Inessa Armand, the writer Maxim Gorky and the world's first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Beyond them lie the bust-adorned graves of many of the Soviet Union's leaders; Chernenko, Andropov, Brezhnev and Stalin. Notably absent is Krushchev, who died in obscurity and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.

Immigrant Scot, James McWhirter, who once worked for shopkeeper, T. C. Beirnes, ventured into a business of his own. He built and modified an elegant Victorian department store in 1898. It soon came to occupy a one acre block in a prime position of Fortitude Valley. It attracted the Protestant shoppers of the city, while the Catholics continued to shop at Beirnes.

The Uspenski cathedral of Helsinki, which is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is the largest Orthodox cathedral in western Europe. With its golden cumpolas and redbrick façade, the cathedral is one of the clearest symbol of the Russian impact on Finnish history.

The cathedral was designed by Russian architect Alexey Gornostaev and completed in 1868.

For the All New Scavenger Hunt #11 - An interesting wall. I had no problem finding an interesting wall, in fact I found seven of them to snap. This one is very ornate and dates from a century ago. The movie theater closed in March of 1961 and the building has mostly been used as a warehouse since then. It's a shame they destroyed the original entrance. (I wish I could get a shot with no cars or trucks parked in front of it, but that seems to be impossible.)

This is Aberdeen Mansions, a block of flats on Kenton Street in Bloomsbury, just north of the Brunswick Centre.

During the 1950s, Miro Zolan of the Royal Ballet lived here at Number 9. Born Miroslav Zlochovsky in Prague in 1922 and trained in classical ballet from a young age, he narrowly avoided death during the Second World War when the grand piano in his Vienna apartment was blown to smithereens by a bomb dropped from an Allied aircraft.

Sustaining shrapnel injuries to his left leg, Zolan fled via Paris to London, where he was able to resume his professional career as a dancer. He went on to work closely with the Royal Ballet's founder Ninette de Valois, who invited Zolan and his wife Sandra Vane to Tehran to help establish the Iranian National Ballet Company. The Islamic Revolution of 1979 put an end to the Iranian National Ballet, but in 2002 it was recreated in exile in Sweden as Les Ballet Persans.

Zolan died in Cricklewood, North London, in 2010.
