Papier und Maschinenstickerei auf Zeitungspapier (SZ vom 30.9. 2016)

These are some of Hanover’s most famous daughters, the Nanas. The word means ‘girls’, and the joyfully dancing figures are the work of sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle. Although French, the artist had a strong connection to Hanover, and was made an honorary citizen in 2000.

On Saturday mornings, the flea market opens under and around them, along the Leine River banks. The Nanas were created by French artist Niki de Sant Phalle in the 1960s and have been in Hannover since 1974. The Nanas are meant to emphasize feminism and women's rights, so they are very... rounded. These "everywomen" are named Sophie, Caroline, and Charlotte (I'm not sure which is which). They also sport some cool psychedelic outfits. While the Nanas were controversial when they first arrived, now they are some of the most loved landmarks of Hannover.

Hinda Kremer Nathan, October 21, 1919 to October 3, 2010

Our friend, Hinda, the quilter, passed away October 3, 2010. She would have been 91 on October 21. She had moved from The Regency to a board and care, and when her daughter was emptying her apartment she gave, at Hinda's request, one of Hinda's thimbles to each of the three of us who were her Scrabble partners. She was a dear woman, a strong spirit, and we all still miss her very much three years later.
