As we drove home from blueberry picking I saw this hawk perched on a sign. These photos are taken from through the rolled down car windows and then from outside the car. The hawk had no fear of us and let me get within 20 feet. The backlight from sunset was extremely strong. At the junction of Rt 100 and 14, Newport Center, Vermont.

These are the best photos of the hawk that was originally backlit on the road sign. I got too close and he flew off to this phone wire. He allowed me to get pretty close again.

L 22" WS 4'2" most common large hawk. head, back and wings dark brown upper chest white, lower chest band of blackish streaks, white thighs. tail pale orange below bring rufous above.
