Red-tailed hawk in flight

Beaver County Alberta

This red tailed hawk gave me a glare as he preened during a snowfall. If only it hadn’t been so dark; he let me get pretty close.

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, PA

Coyote Hills Regional Park, Fremont California

This juvenile was perched in a tree right next to the trail at Shoreline. We watched so many people walking by stopping right under the hawk to take photos with their phones and it was not fazed at all...too bad it was an overcast day because this was a nice photo opportunity.

I was surprised when this Red-tail spotted me and didn't take off for the great blue yonder, but instead for another branch on the edge of the woods. While I was shooting I noticed him looking upwards at one point and he started flapping. I didn't even notice the action until I reviewed my photos and was completely astonished to find this hawk had come under attack by another Red-tail. Awesome action, but was dismayed to find the focus was not on target. Oh well...what are the chances of getting a do-over on this?

After several visits, I finally got all four of these Redtailed Hawk chicks visible, looking at me and not scratching or blinking.

We got some really nice looks at this young one. You can see one red tail feather peeking out. Soon enough it will molt into adult plumage and have a full on red tail.

There are many color variations and subspecies of this widespread hawk. This one looked a little different than the ones I usually see here. It looks very much like the illustration in my Sibley guide described as the Southwestern subspecies that occurs in Arizona, New Mexico and adjacent arid regions which also according to Sibley blends with western Canadian color morphs. These are described as "intergrades" The flight shot in the comment box also matches the under-side flight shot illustration in the Sibley guide.

I have also added my first capture of a Broad-winged Hawk. This is not a particularly good shot, but it is a first capture and clearly shows (through the leaves) the two wide dark tail bands typical of an adult. This crow-sized raptor is smallest of the buteos in North America. Unlike their larger cousins, the Red-tailed Hawk and Swainson's Hawk that we see most often here in central Alberta, they will forage deep in the forest canopy. They eat small mammals like voles, Chipmunks, and squirrels as well as small birds and a wide variety of insects. We don't see them often sitting on fence posts by open fields or soaring. I found this one in the forest at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre east of Edmonton.

This guy came screaming in and scared off the little Green Herons

This young hawk has been hanging around my house for the past week. A young red tailed, I believe. The weather has been dreary and the light poor, unsuitable for photography with my 200mm lens. I've been trying for days, getting only tiny dark images at the top of trees. But this morning, it must have heard me grumbling while it was sitting in the top of a tall walnut tree, because it flew down to a low, rotted poplar branch just long enough for me to run out into the street and snap half a dozen exposures against the pine branches behind it, before returning to its original, high perch out of range. It's been hanging around so much even the crows have quit harassing it.

Through the winter I saw many Red-tailed Hawks, now they are much less common. This was the first one I had seen for a while.

Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) over Kelowna Rec Field, Kelowna, BC.

While I was doing my extended shoot with Kessie, this Red-tail appeared 'out of nowhere' and took a spit overhead. Worth a try, I thought. Not as sharp in the white wing feathers as one might want, perhaps, I wanted to capture the whole colour pattern at least....

One of a pair that has been at Meadowbrook park.

I posted two flying Hawk shots this evening - this Red-tailed Hawk and a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk.

Beaver County, Alberta.

Obliging immature Red-Tailed Hawk posed for me in a tree not far from the road, then flew to a similarly close tree with different lighting angle. Very kind of it, especially since I'm still learning how to hold that new camera steady at higher zooms. (Yes, they are very commonly found but they’re still gorgeous.)
