This has been a good year for the Red Spotted Purples in my area. This series are all from a single outing following a dry streambed at Broughtons Wildlife Education Area on 24 Aug 2018. Dry or damp stream beds seem to be a favorite habitat for many late summer butterflies and the Red Spotted Purples definitely enjoy this habitat. The photos are both natural light and flash fill. You may note that on a butterfly like these with wings that tend to polarize light depending on your viewing angle that the flash produces different colors than the natural light view and i have included both.
