Seaman Recruit Jacob Schmitzerle is a three-gallon blood donor and will continue donating blood while serving in the U.S. Navy. His grandfather, retired Army Cpl. Esquiel B. Leos, served in the Army during the Korean War and required a blood transfusion after being injured in battle.

Recruiters from the Mechanicsburg RS hosted an Educator’s Breakfast Sept. 30 at the Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, Pa. This breakfast was a part of the weeklong events of the Harrisburg Battalion’s Army Rivalry Tour for the football game Red Land at Cedar Cliff on Oct. Army Rivalry Tour provides local recruiting stations with leads, and develops and cultivates espirt de corps within the school’s student body and staff. It also gives the community an added motivation to attend the game to support their high school’s football team. It can also provide recruiters the opportunity to recognize the weekly winners of the battalion-sponsored Army Iron Man and Army Coach Competitions. The Emancipation Proclamation included a provision opening enlistment in the military to African American men. More than 185,000 black volunteers took up the call and fought to liberate those still held in slavery.
“Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters U.S.,” wrote abolitionist Frederick Douglass, “let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder, and bullets in his pocket, and there is no power on the earth or under the earth which can deny that he has earned the right of citizenship in the United States.”
