Under the willow the willow

I heard the butcher-bird sing,

Come out you fine young fellow

From under your mother's wing.

I'll show you the magic garden

That hangs in the beamy air,

The way of the Lynx and the angry Sphinx

And the fun of the freezing fair.

Lie down lie down with my daughter

Beneath the Arabian tree,

Gaze on your face in the water

Forget the scribbling sea.

Your pillow the nine bright shiners.

Your bed the spilling sand,

But the terrible toy of my lily-white boy

Is the gun in his innocent hand.

You must take off your clothes for the Doctor

And stand as straight as a pin

His hand of stone on your white breast-bone

Where the bullets all go in.

They'll dress you in lawn and linen

And fill you with Plymouth gin,

O the devil may wear a rose in his hair

I'll wear my fine doe-skin.

My mother weeps as I leave her

But I tell her it won't be long,

The murderers wail in Wandsworth Gaol

But I shoot a more popular song.

Down in the enemy country

Under the enemy tree

There lies a lad whose heart has gone bad

Waiting for me, for me.

He says I have no culture

And that when I've stormed the pass

I shall fall on the farm with a smoking arm

And ravish his bonny lass.

Under the willow the willow

Death spreads her dripping wings

And caught in the snare of the bleeding air

The butcher bird sings, sings, sings.

“Bah! He wasn’t so tough, I could take him with one hand behind my back,” grunted one of the dragon soldiers as he tore into a fish. The man to his left coughed and laughed as he guzzled down his ale. “Sure you could. Did you know who that was? That was THE Grogkarn of the northern wastes. He could tear your limbs off, he could. I heard him grumbled he traveled all the way from Garheim to meet with Drakk, so you know the rumors of his prowess must be true.”

“Bah!” the first soldier responded with a dismissive wave and he too drank his ale. The others chuckled and continued to eat their dinner.

The soldiers were guarding a sea fort gifted to Drakk by the Baron himself. It served as one of Drakk’s outposts, a study for his magics, a prison, and a vault for some of his treasures. Today it served as a meeting spot for some of the Badland’s most infamous mercenaries--Drakk was recruiting.

Commander Ester, lieutenant of the Baron and liaison to Drakk, stood in the antechamber along with two grey robed monks and three strangers. One was leaning against the stairwell, a middle aged man with graying hair and wrinkles with a permanent scowl on his face. He wore leather armor and had various weapons strapped all over along with an impressive collection of vials filled with poisons and swirling vapors strapped to his belt. Another stood boldly in front of the fireplace, warming his hands and grinning an evil smile. Large for a hobgoblin, he wore dark armor with ancient runes, no doubt looted from some forgotten temple. The third man stood frowning in front of Commander Ester. He dwarfed the other men in the chamber. His muscles tensed and his bold mustache bristled as he spoke to the Commander.

“Please, gentleman, wait your turn,” the Commander pleaded to those assembled. “The Sorcerer will speak to you soon.”

“I have not traveled all the way from Garhiem to wait in this blasted room!” Roared the half-giant. The hobgoblin regarded his gloves as he spoke up, “Yes indeed. My boys waiting outside the walls are not the most patient sort.” The assassin merely continued to lean, his scowl deepening.

Behind the large doors Drakk sat behind his desk and regarded his first interviewee. A bald man with a dark beard, he wore black decorated silk robes and carried a staff. He could sense the magic flowing off the man, and knew the reputation of the illusionist was not one of exaggeration. “Nozif the Illusionist, welcome. I’ll get to the point, the Baron has sent out a rallying cry to bolster our numbers. I personally desire only the best money can buy to join my list of allies, and so here you are. What do you say?”

Nozif inclined his head as a token of respect. “Word of your power and ambition reaches even my ears Drakk the Dragon Sorcerer. I would be honored to be considered your ally.”

“Excellent, I will be in touch my friend.” With another nod, Nozif walked back to the doors to exit the chamber. “Three more to go…” Drakk muttered to himself.

Just then, the door slid open, and Lt. Harrow stepped into the quarters. He was all too casual, a smirk playing on his lips. “You settling in okay, Julana? I hear the nights can be rough for new arrivals.”

She forced a smile, trying to keep her tone steady. “I’m managing, sir.”

He leaned against the sink, his eyes lingering a moment too long. “If you need any... guidance, I’d be happy to show you to the security wing.”

Great, just what I need.

“No, thank you, sir,” she replied, keeping her voice firm. “I can find my way.”

He chuckled, brushing it off. “Alright then, just remember, I’m around if you need anything.”

As he stepped back, she felt a shiver of relief mixed with unease. The night shift was already off to a questionable start.

Alright. One night at a time. Just get through it. Can’t screw this up. I need this job.

Meet two of Wigan’s newest recruits. James Booth and Stacey Whitehouse will become PCs next month.

The first recruits to join GMP in five years are finishing their training by visiting their new patches.

In a few weeks’ time 100 new officers will be attested at a ceremony in Salford before becoming fully operational officers within neighbourhood policing teams across Greater Manchester.

The new recruits are being officially introduced to the areas that they will be policing, getting to know the local area, meeting community groups and attending briefings to learn from officers who already work there.

The 100 are all former GMP employees having previously been either Police Community Support Officers (PCSO), Special Constables, apprentices or police staff.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling, said: “The introduction of these 100 new officers is part of our commitment to neighbourhood policing across Greater Manchester.

“Many of these recruits will be building upon their experience as former PCSOs or Special Constables and will therefore already have established the skills necessary to succeed in neighbourhood policing.

“The recruits join GMP as we make full use of the latest technology, including smartphones and tablets, which will allow frontline officers to spend more time out policing in the community.

“Through the ongoing recruitment we continue with our commitment to make sure that Greater Manchester Police is representative of the people and communities in which we serve.”

Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said: “For the first time in five years we will see a significant number of new police officers patrolling our streets, which is good news for the communities of Greater Manchester.

“Local people have told me that they want a strong and sustainable police service keeping them and their homes safe. Despite ongoing government cuts to policing, I am determined to deliver that, working with the Chief Constable to drive forward new recruitment to bolster local policing.“

500 new officers will join the Force this year but the total number of overall officers will be maintained at current levels.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Loeffler, a Company Commander at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, N.J., provides motivational instruction to Seaman Recruit Tyler Clendenen Friday, Aug. 28, 2015. Part of the process of basic military training is to induce high levels of stress in order to ensure that a recruit can later perform his or her job in the fleet where handling stress appropriately could mean the difference between life and death. The recruit seated on a box in the centre of the photograph is slicing a chunk from a loaf of Kommißbrot, a dark type of bread, baked from rye and other flours and known for its long shelf life. During the war, sawdust was sometimes added to compensate for shortages of flour.

1834 Frigate Vernon Recruitment Poster - National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle

It seems that not everybody wants to be

in the "Army of Me"...

I think this is the new male firefox - and he looks younger than the 2 females by far. He was sharing the exhibit with the younger of the 2 females - and the elder female Khaya was nowhere in sight. I don't know the names yet of the two younger firefoxes.
