My boy has not wanted any attention since his surgery a few days ago. He has been unusually sedate and sedated and hasn't eaten more than a nibble. We are going to visit the vet today to follow up the dental surgery and make sure things are going as expected. Happy Caturday!
The village of Glenridding was devastated by the flooding in December, not once but, twice. The Beck (a small stream taking water from the adjacent mountains) was incapable of handling the volume of water and, it's banks were breached in many places. The village was effectively cut off from civilisation . Fortunately, the spirit of the village is strong and, it is springing back to some semblance of normality.
Efforts and pain. Then it comes out the serenity.

I discovered a new use for my iPad apps this weekend. I've got one of my mixed media watercolour and pastel works pinned to my wall. It's been there for years and the watercolour has faded. So I took a photo of it to see what the iPad apps could do to recover some of the colour and textures of the original. I used Snapseed and Afterlight, and I think they did a good job. Recovered a lot of the colour and life of the watercolour. The pastel is a bit heavy-handed - but the result is closer to what I painted many years ago ;o)
Here my Prince is recovering from his hip surgery (March 2011) (see note).
Right now (November 2011) the leg is amputated because the same hip-bone went upwards his spine. A spinal nerve got blocked and his leg was partly paralysed. He couldn't walk normal anymore, was in terrible pains, so the only thing we could do was to amputate it.
â™± Alfie was 2 and a 1/2 year here.
He was very angry yesterday after surgery... and sick. Right now he is sleeping, a healing sleep I hope. His left leg has to become very strong to carry his body. So sorry Alfie but let's go for a new start. No way back.
"Let's stay together
Loving you whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
'Cause being around you is all I see
It's why I want us to
stay together....."

Brilliant sunrise light illuminates fresh snow at Oregon's Crater Lake.
This is an image I've been waiting years to make. Since first arriving in Oregon a few years back, Crater Lake has been one of my favorite locations, and I've gotten to know it quite well through my many visits - so I knew exactly what I was looking for. When I saw two new feet of snow in the forecast, I adjusted my plans to be here and shoot the day after. For Crater Lake, two feet is a laughable amount, given that it typically receives closer to 50 feet of snowfall per year - but it was enough to make it appealing in an otherwise dismal winter for snow levels here in the Pacific Northwest.
Winter here is beautiful, but it presents its challenges: one can only drive as far as Rim Village on the south rim, and all the best spots that allow one to really incorporate Wizard Island are found on the west rim. This means snowshoeing for miles is a necessity. This wouldn't be such a huge deal, except the best light is at sunrise - meaning you're either camping overnight in the snow, or getting up at 4am.
I chose the latter option, and for the entire second half of the two-hour trek, the sky was already burning pink and red. This motivated me to get the hike done quicker, and I arrived at the end of the red stages of sunrise, as the light started to become orange. Given that the snowpack was 10+ feet lower than it should have been this time of year, my planned compositions weren't 100% ideal, since it was tougher to get above the trees - but I think I still made it work. I always get asked why I don't include the rest of the lake on the left in shots from this area - well, for one, it's rather empty; two, there's a rock wall and some fairly unappealing trees just out of frame to the left; and three, I'd be unable to nail down the composition in-camera (I tend to avoid panos/stitches for this reason).
I chose this particular spot/composition because of the clear views of Mount Scott and Garfield Peak, the elevation above (and proximity to) Wizard Island, the foreground snowdrifts, and the space to allow the trees to cast shadows on the snow. This is the closest spot that I knew would satisfy these requirements, and it was 6 miles round trip. I'm not one to regale my audience with exaggerated tales of the difficulty involved in getting a shot, but 6 miles snowshoeing with frequent elevation change feels more like 15 miles backpacking in the summer - and I had to do it on 2 hours of sleep. Worth the nausea and soreness the next day!
A bit of tech info: this is mostly a single exposure, with some of the brightest highlights around the sun recovered from a darker bracketed exposure. The sunstar/flare is natural - I've found shooting Nikon's newer lenses at f/11 to f/16 will often produce more interesting results than the "traditional" f/22 sunstar.
from hospital. Seven days later, I can at last get socks on my feet, which means I can also dress again! Yay!

Northbound traffic is still flowing along Hoddle Street in Clifton Hill as crews prepare SSR locomotive P16 to separate Metro Trains X'Trapolis motor car 854M from derailed trailer car 1627T and rear motor car 853M. Leading set 17M-1309T-18M was hauled by P16 & P17 to Victoria Park earlier in the evening, and travelled back to the city under its own power. 14/7/25
Our cat just had surgery for a tumour in the back, successfully removed.
Would he still be well disposed towards the rabbit ?
This little bird is a Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata), the most common Warbler in the US, although I have only seen one a few times at my home in New Hampshire. The little guy crashed into one of my windows, which is not uncommon here since I live at the top of a hill. With all the predators around, my dog Casey and I watched the bird until it was strong enough to fly away on its own, about 20 minutes. I'm sure Casey was sorry to see her new friend go :-)
The natural habitat at Pella East is slowly recovering after getting flushed downstream. Boulder County eventually reopened Pella Crossing Park at Hygiene after the flood a decade ago. Who thought that a flood plain with multiple gravel pits, a river bottom and ditches would ever flood in the age of (whisper) global warming... Pruett and his Petroleum Parade is watching me and reporting to Sessions on his special Bat Phone. We have met the enemy and they are all liars and scum artists.
This all started when I delivered a couple of the tomato plants to Ronnie in Hygiene. He related that the park on the other side of the railroad tracks, had reopened. It's been some time since I wandered the area so this time I checked out Sunset pond at Pella and found this natural pond side habitat. The Pella story is a tale of two different days as can be seen in the sky.
Pella was an original St. Vrain river ford settlement, like Longmont, that long disappeared unlike Longmont. Now, there apparently are several prairie castle owners who prefer this flood plain. Hygiene eventually sprung up north of old Pella. I earlier visited the park's east side on North 75th Street south of Hygiene. Any trek out here is pleasant. Boulder County volunteers were almost seeding some damaged area. The county already stood the flood damaged out house back up. HA.
