I spent my Saturday taking photos at "Camp Courage", an annual day camp for children who have dealt with cancer in some form in their lives or the lives of someone they love.
Neeake, aka Fred Shaw, is a story teller and a descended of the Shawnee Nation.
Fred spent some time telling stories about the Shawnee Nation, about the interconnectedness of the world, nature and all people.
The stories he holds as a sacred trust are of the balance of all life and the gift that each life is to the other. They are "bibadinsawawachitah," the proper way to walk upon the earth.
He spent some time explaining the paint on his face.
The black line down his nose and chin tell that he is a story teller.
The green lines on his left cheek are a representation between the great fight between man and his brother the bear and a symbol of peace and nature.
The white dots on his right cheek represent spoken peace. The dots represent the broken line of peace, not peace, peace, not peace. The dots reach to his ears, meaning that if you speak peace enough, an ear will eventually hear it, even if it is your own.
The black dot on his forhead shows that he is a warrior, and in connection with the white dots, mean that he is a man of peace, not because he is weak or has been defeated, but because he has chosen that path.
It was amazing to see about 30 kids ranging from about 14 to 5 engrossed for nearly 45 minutes while Neeake spoke about nature, and his people.
Neeake is a great man and one that more people should hear.
