These guys are apparently part of 'Operation Reconnect' - an operation attempting to shine a spotlight on families torn apart by the Church of Scientology.

On the 2nd Thursday of every August, Victoria General Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) hosts an annual reunion party for ‘graduates’ of the NICU. The NICU provides highly-specialized medical and nursing care to approximately 600 babies each year. The annual reunion gives families and the staff who cared for these infants the opportunity to reconnect and celebrate.

We celebrated the life and times of our old pal Steve Gano in Big Sur with a couple dozen close friends and colleagues. Steve was a gentleman and a scholar, who inspired many of us to create new forms of 'casual multimedia.' I worked closely with Steve at the Apple Multimedia Lab, where we developed many pioneering projects in the late eighties, such as the Visual Almanac and Life Story. He was a wonderful partner, who had a knack for bringing ideas to life through thoughtful designs and prototypes, and was as comfortable with the arts and sciences as he was with technology development. He thought like a journalist, searching for truth in all our projects, and holding us up to a high standard by focusing on the deeper meaning and impact of our products.

He left too soon and we will miss him. For his memorial, I created a video tribute retracing his life story through photos and movie clips that paint a sketchy portrait of an exceptional man. We will miss Steve, but are grateful to have spent so many good years with him. His memorial brought many of us back together, and I hope that we will stay in touch and keep working with each other along the path that he helped pave for all of us.

It’s been a while.

After three days of relentless heat, these alien-like figurines caught the golden spill of evening sunlight as it poured into my studio. With the heat dome pressing in from outside, I took the chance to dust off an older camera body and reconnect with the fundamentals—working with what I have, where I am.

These small, colorful plastic figures—part sci-fi, part abstraction—became my subjects. They sat patiently on shelves and my workbench, offering shape, texture, and playful strangeness under the changing light. For several evenings I returned, chasing the way sunlight moved across the studio, trying to capture something honest: light, color, surface, moment.

In a way, this project isn’t just about photography. It’s about returning to old habits—some good, some complicated—and rediscovering the skills and curiosity that first drew me to this medium.

I've been part of this Flickr community since 2005. Over the past two decades, many of my creative paths have been shaped by what I’ve shared and discovered here. This small set of images is a step back toward that—toward making, toward seeing, and toward reconnecting.
