Our lunch table. It was a table was found after it had been soaked in water and had cracked. Claude, a furniture artist, saved it by using wood joints throughout the whole piece to keep the table from splitting further. This one section shows an interesting "zipper" effect to the technique he applied.

Eva Bande is a grassroots organiser and is currently spearheading a land reclamation movement in Sulawesi where farmers rehabilitate unauthorised plantations into forests and organic farms. This has allowed them to not only preserve the last remaining forests but also build sustainable business around agricultural produce. The money that they earn by selling food is used to run a school for the children.

There'll surely be another event next year, so get in early.

Wood is a very versatile material that provides beauty and strength. Nowadays, wooden products such as furniture are largely obtained by unsustainable logging operations which could make the forests go bald and would have a negative impact to the environment. Already, this is happening. One of the best ways to go green is using reclaimed wood furniture.

As the TranzAlpine train approached Greymouth there was a steam-train engine reclaimaton project going on alongside the train line. In days gone by the steam-train engines were just pushed over the side of the hill when they were no longer in use. This project was reclaiming those old trains.

Photochallenge 281 - STRETCH

Bahrain is a generally flat and consisting of a low desert plain rising gently to a low central escarpment. A total area of 665 km2 (257 sq mi). Bahrain does not share a land boundary with another country but does have a 161 km (100 mi) coastline and claims a further 22 km (12 nmi) of territorial sea and a 24 km (13 nmi) contiguous zone.......With these....The Government of the Kingdom Of Bahrain opted to STRETCH its land area by doing continuous Land Reclaimation...a kind of an educational challenge for today.

Before Twitter and Facebook, activists used the streets as a public forum to express their creativity and organize for political goals, with their messages wheatpasted right onto lampposts and walls. It was the era of 'xerocracy,' and the entire city were gallery walls. Nowhere was this form of expression more prevalent than the East Village. From posters expressing stark opposition to building demolitions, to stencils addressing the AIDS epidemic and more, such expressions of conscience and conflict were everywhere. In this panel discussion we heard from some of the artists of that time, who are still creating today, including Seth Tobocman, Anton van Dalen, Tamara Wyndham and Kristin Reed.
