Russian Ridge, Santa Cruz Mountains, California

A succession of ridge lines recedes into the distance as the sun is setting. These ridges are the product of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates sliding stickily past one another for a few million years. The nominal boundary line is the San Andreas Fault, about a mile or so directly behind us.

Tried to capture the light on the sea from the sun behind some clouds. It was late afternoon and the light had been rather dramatic. Not sure that this does it justice!

This morning I watched

a mushroom

eat a stump.

I ate the mushroom

and the stump ate time.

10,000 years ago

became now

as ice receded

leaving kettles

hovering above till.

Eventually the spores

showed me two things-

-our star was aging out

-eventually and aging out

are meaningless.

Just names.

I photographed these ridges on a hazy day from Changling, the tomb of the Ming Emperor Yongle (1360-1424) and Empress Renxiaowen (1362-1407). The tomb lies in the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2000 as "Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties" some 45 km north-northwest of Beijing, China.

Changling, and the Forbidden City in Beijing, were both built between 1406 and 1420 on the orders of Emperor Yongle.

Jökulsárlón (Iceland) 20210716

Jökulsárlón (literally "glacial river lagoon") is a large glacial lake in the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of the melting of the glaciers. It is now 1.5 km away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2. In 2009 it was reported to be the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 284 m, as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s.

The lake can be seen from Route 1 between Höfn and Skaftafell. It appears as "a ghostly procession of luminous blue icebergs".

Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies: A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Batman Begins, as well as the reality TV series The Amazing Race. In 1991, Iceland issued a postage stamp, with a face value of 26 kronurs, depicting Jökulsárlón.

The tongue of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is a major attraction for tourists.

Rust, decay, and graffiti on an abandoned railroad bridge, behind a chain link fence. The bridge, now part of a hiking and biking trail, is being scheduled for cleaning and repainting, so the little scene above will no longer remain, part of a receding past.

The receding water during the beginning low tide rendered it safe to get close to the rocks and capture the dynamics of the moving water. Not long before, massive waves came in at this place. The image shows one of the rock formations extending into the sea which were visible from above in the image which I have shared right before this one.

Black Rock Desert in Winter, Gerlach, Nevada.

It was still a bit breezy, but some areas around the playa had layers of fog until the sun began to warm things up. The sun had been up just long enough to highlight this range, with the mountains behind me keeping the playa in shade. It was one heck of an amazingly quiet morning and as far as I could see, I was the only one there.

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!

Standing in receding floodwaters at a Crystal Springs Pond, my first northern lights' reflections shot.

This period of skies dark enough to see stars/northern lights + open (not frozen) water is so brief, I was excited about this opportunity.

Night sky is still pretty bright at 11:40 pm.

the tide whispers secrets as it recedes, leaving behind a mirror for the sky on the sands of palma. a lone wanderer, a silhouette against the canvas of twilight, is caught mid-stride, his reflection a perfect twin below. the horizon blurs the sea into the heavens, while the last rays of the sun play hide and seek with the clouds. it's a moment suspended, a dance between light and shadow, where time seems to pause for a breath, and the world is reflected in a single, thoughtful step.

Well, you can't expect sunny weather EVERY day.

East side of RMNP on Trail Ridge Road

The daylight recedes in unison, this room

Buries the hours like death, in motion

Nobody else can pull me out

The fields of elation, quiet and loamy

Your name is a sin I breathe, like oxygen

Caught in the careless arms of lust, again

Nobody else can pull me out

The fields of elation, quiet and loamy

And nobody else can pull me out

And the fields of elation, quiet and loamy

And nobody else can pull me out

And the fields of elation, quiet and loamy

I'm losing my faith in our lives apart

Really loving this new look I put on my alt today.

A receding tide left my local beach covered in pools, this morning and the sunrise was the best I've seen for some time. Sandsend, looking towards Whitby with water and early light.

Iguazu Falls, Iguazú Falls, Iguassu Falls, or Iguaçu Falls (Spanish: Cataratas del Iguazú [kataˈɾatas ðel iɣwaˈsu]; Guarani: Chororo Yguasu [ɕoɾoɾo ɨɣʷasu]; Portuguese: Cataratas do Iguaçu [kataˈɾatɐʒ du iɡwaˈsu]) are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The Iguazu River rises near the city of Curitiba. For most of its course, the river flows through Brazil, however, most of the falls are on the Argentine side. Below its confluence with the San Antonio River, the Iguazu River forms the boundary between Argentina and Brazil.

The name "Iguazu" comes from the Guarani or Tupi words "y" [ɨ], meaning "water", and "ûasú "[waˈsu], meaning "big". Legend has it that a deity planned to marry a beautiful woman named Naipí, who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In a rage, the deity sliced the river, creating the waterfalls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall. The first European to record the existence of the falls was the Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541.

Iguazu Falls are located where the Iguazu River tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau, 23 kilometres (14 mi) upriver from the Iguazu's confluence with the Paraná River.Numerous islands along the 2.7-kilometre-long (1.7 mi) edge divide the falls into many separate waterfalls and cataracts, varying between 60 to 82 metres (197 to 269 ft) high. The number of these smaller waterfalls fluctuates from 150 to 300, depending on the water level. Approximately half of the river's flow falls into a long and narrow chasm called the Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese). The Devil's Throat is U-shaped, 82 metres high, 150 m wide, and 700 m long (269×492×2,297 ft). Placenames have been given also to many other smaller falls, such as San Martín Falls, Bossetti Falls, and many others.

About 900 metres (2,950 ft) of the 2.7-kilometre (1.7 mi) length does not have water flowing over it. The edge of the basalt cap recedes by 3 mm (0.1 in) per year. The water of the lower Iguazu collects in a canyon that drains into the Paraná River, a short distance downstream from the Itaipu Dam. The junction of the water flows marks the border between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. There are points in the cities of Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, and Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, which have access to the Iguazu River, where the borders of all three nations may be seen, a popular tourist attraction for visitors to the three cities.

The Iguazu Falls are arranged in a way that resembles a reversed letter "J". The border between Brazil and Argentina runs through the Devil's Throat. On the right bank is the Brazilian territory, which has just over 20% of the jumps of these falls, and the left side jumps are Argentine, which make up almost 80% of the falls.

We watched these two polar bears (Ursus maritimus) come together for 5 minutes and then walk away in opposite directions across the ice in Svalbard. We wondered if they were siblings briefly reunited and what their future will hold as the ice recedes more each year.

Luskentyre Beach, with it huge expanses of golden sands, is one on the largest and most spectacular beaches in the UK. As the tide receeded, I photographed a serpentine stream of water flowing across the sands to the sea, Isle of Harris, Scotland.
