Christopher L. Barrett, Executive Director, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute/Professor of Computer Science, Virginia Tech. Dr. Barrett’s talk entitled “Massively Interactive Systems: Thinking and Deciding in the Age of Big Data"
Abstract: This talk discusses advanced computationally assisted reasoning about large interaction-dominated systems. Current questions in science, from the biochemical foundations of life to the scale of the world economy, involve details of huge numbers and levels of intricate interactions. Subtle indirect causal connections and vastly extended definitions of system boundaries dominate the immediate future of scientific research. Beyond sheer numbers of details and interactions, the systems are variously layered and structured in ways perhaps best described as networks. Interactions include, and often co-create, these morphological and dynamical features, which can interact in their own right. Such “massively interacting” systems are characterized by, among other things, large amounts of data and branching behaviors. Although the amount of associated data is large, the systems do not even begin to explore their entire phase spaces. Their study is characterized by advanced computational methods. Major methodological revisions seem to be indicated.
Heretofore unavailable and rapidly growing basic source data and increasingly powerful computing resources drive complex system science toward unprecedented detail and scale. There is no obvious reason for this direction in science to change. The cost of acquiring data has historically dominated scientific costs and shaped the research environment in terms of approaches and even questions. In the several years, as the costs of social data, biological data and physical data have plummeted on a per-unit basis and as the volume of data is growing exponentially, the cost drivers for scientific research have clearly shifted from data generation to storage and analytical computation-based methods. The research environment is rapidly being reshaped by this change and, in particular, the social and bio–sciences are revolutionized by it. Moreover, the study of socially– and biologically–coupled systems (e.g., societal infrastructures and infectious disease public health policy analysis) is in flux as computation-based methods begin to greatly expand the scope of traditional problems in revolutionary ways.
How does this situation serve to guide the development of “information portal technology” for complex system science and for decision support? An example of an approach to detailed computational analysis of social and behavioral interaction with physical and infrastructure effects in the immediate aftermath of a devastating disaster will be described in this context.

Levi turns math and physics upside down, revealing how physics can simplify proofs and lead to quicker solutions and new theorems, and how physical solutions can illustrate why results are true in ways lengthy mathematical calculations never can. Did you know it's possible to derive the Pythagorean theorem by spinning a fish tank filled with water? Or that soap film holds the key to determining the cheapest container for a given volume? Or that the line of best fit for a data set can be found using a mechanical contraption made from a rod and springs?
Mrs. Flores' 5th grade class tried their hand at Breakout. Mrs. Payleitner, Media Specialist at Frederick created three sets of locked boxes that contained clues, puzzles, and mysteries that had to be solved in order to unlock the main box that housed the treasure. Teams had to work together to decipher codes, find clues, and use logic to unlock each aspect of the game. Clues were based on the book Holes by Louis Sachar. Team Blue was the first to open all of the locks and claim their treasure - a Frederick Feather.

If you’ve never used a professional video studio before, the process can be a little mysterious.
Things move fast when you work with us, and our clients sometimes aren’t sure of the reasoning behind some of our processes. This is often a concern when it comes time to storyboard your video; clients sometimes aren’t sure what exactly a storyboard is, what it’s for, or why we build them.
You see, great pieces of work, whether they’re blog posts or animations, don’t jump straight out of our brains and onto the screen. Instead, everything we produce starts life as a simple idea scribbled on a bit of paper. Over time, our production process adds more detail to this idea until it evolves into a brilliant product ready for delivery.
We turn up the ‘fidelity’ – or quality – of our output slowly so you have a tonne of chances to offer your own suggestions and critiques. By making changes at low-fidelity stages, we waste less time on amendments at the time-intensive stages and get the product to you faster.
Let’s explore how this process works:
Storyboarding phase
Your storyboard is essentially a hand-drawn breakdown of your finished video. We use it to map each shot in your animation and create a wireframe of everything we will need to animate. You won’t see colour or any significant design work here, but you will get a complete picture of your animation story, the voiceover, and how all the pieces will fit together. If there’s anything you don’t like at this point we can change it quickly, meaning our production process is much faster.
Here’s an example of a storyboard we produced for AXIS Computing:
Illustrations phase
Once we have your storyboard, we increase the fidelity with a digital illustration. This will showcase all your brand colours, character models, and high-quality graphics. Think of your illustrations panel as a still version of your final video. This phase is the perfect time to make any colour or graphic amendments. Want to change the colour on your protagonist’s jacket? Not sure about the font we’ve chosen? Now is the time to tell us. This is also the ideal time to check whether your video is on brand.
Now here’s AXIS again, but with complete illustrations:
Animation phase
Once we’ve finalised the illustration panels with you, we bring everything to life in the animation phase. This is the most time intensive part of the process, so it’s important we get everything right in the previous phases. Changing the colour on a hat is much quicker when it’s a simple illustration and not a digital animation. As long as everything is present and correct in your illustration phase, however, our animation process will be nice and fast.
The final Axis video is in production, so we’ll update this blog once it’s ready (it’s looking great though)!
Delivery
And there you have it! One beautifully animated story that you can use in any number of marketing situations. We can deliver it to you in a range of digital formats – just let us know what you prefer.
If you’d like to hear more about our production process, simply drop us a quick email today.

The intention of this course series seeks to provide an insight into classical Aristotelian logic in order to strengthen critical reasoning/rhetoric skills amongst the activist community. This course allowed for individuals to better represent themselves and the struggles they support in interviews, and will better allow for participants to hold-their-own in media interviews and in conversation amongst detractors from causes actively supported by Peace House/Affiliates.
Each course will be structured into a two-hour block containing two parts: theory and application. The first hour will contain teachings from varying works of antiquity, from Aristotle's Logic to the Socratic dialogues and orations from Cicero & other distinguished rhetoricians. From here, theoretical knowledge will be applied in addressing/critiquing potent arguments through the history of philosophy, from Descartes Cogito Ergo Sum to Immanuel Kant's metaphysical theory. The second one-hour block will deal with the application of technique acquired in the aforementioned block. Through consensus, we will decide which topic those in attendance would like to address, and will allow for a demonstration of informal logic and constructive criticism relative to the presentation of said argument (Note: if it is felt that there should be scheduled topics by course attendees, methodology for topic selection is subject to change).
-Presentation One: Introduction to Logic/Rhetoric: Presentation One will address one-third of Aristotle's triangle-of-rhetoric: Logos
1) Layman's Logic vs. Logic as a Math/theoretical science (If everyone has opinions and they're all equally valid, why does debate exist?) -This section will cover the distinction between logic and Logic, as well as an introduction to the syllogistic form/ overview of the structure of argument. The distinction between Formal and Informal Logic will be made.
2) Logic in Practice; a reading of Plato's Euthyphro.
-A group reading of Euthyphro will demonstrate how to address an opponent's argument on an opponent's terms. This will further explain the structure of argument and how many disputes remain unresolved due to axiomatic non-concessions.
-Follow-Up to Presentation One; Debate using per-determined axioms
as mentioned in days 19 and 20, i was in a wedding this weekend. this gave me reasoning power to do something nice for myself and get my nails done. i ALSO had my first pedicure. now normally, i do my own, but after having a "professional" do it, i think i may be addicted. this was not only my first, but also my first this summer, as i've not bothered with anything but a quick trim here or there... this morning, while playing dress up/studio, i HAD to take a moment to document just how nice my well manicured feet looked in my heels (which i don't wear enough of)... i probably sat around in my dress and heels today for about a half hour before returning them to the closet...at one point, i almost broke out in song, as i felt like natalie wood in west side story... (hums "i feel pretty" ) the dancing part wouldn't have happened though. i'm lucky to be able to walk in heels...

1. My reasoning behind this photo is, I have a huge passion for cars, I love to take photos of cars, build cars, and attend meets.
This Photo works because of the sunset in the background behind the car.
I chose to take this photo because I have a huge interest in cars.
2. My brother drove me to an empty school parking lot then he positioned the car in the right direction and I took the photos.
The principle I used in this photo is, lining the sunset up with the top grid in the photo, and positioning the car in the right position direction so there is enough balance.
Next time I could use a tripod.
My biggest strength is the sunset/color of the sky in the background.
