I know. I'm hardly original in my choice of subject for today. I'd bet there were at least a million cemetery pics posted but this one has some different reasoning than it being a Halloween theme.
The first, and least important, reason is that I finally got off my ass and found a decent circular polarizer for my 28-135mm lens. Nice timing, right? I go out and buy this after all of the fall color is gone. No, I'm not always a smart man.
The second reason for it is because MK and I found this little graveyard in a nearby state park and didn't expect to see anything like it there. I was on the look out for raptors and other local birds when we noticed this headstone from the road. There was really no choice but to swap out my 400mm for my 28-135mm and go wander through this place.
The final, and most important, reason for posting this is that this location was the epitome of why MK and I have both always wanted to be cremated and have our ashes scattered - neglect. This is also an example of why I believe Ryanne wanted to be laid to rest through cremation and distribution as well.
This small graveyard is very old, at least by US standards. The most recent grave we could find was some time in the 1890's but it is also seemingly forgotten. In most cases, the headstones have fallen and the prairie grass has overtaken them. This does not look like a place of peaceful rest and honor for the dead but more a purgatory of forgotten internment. As I walked amongst the markers for the dead, I realized that this felt more like a place where earthly remains have been imprisoned as opposed to a location where they were set free.
Another sad fact that I noticed in this community of the dead is that most of those buried here were children - many under the age of three. Those born into 19th century central Illinois farm families had to be made of sturdy stuff and it was a miracle for any of them to reach adulthood. Life here at that time was rarely easy and not for the weak of resolve or constitution.
There were a number of locations where parents were buried next to the graves of their children. Often, there was quite a gap between the passing of a child and the death of the parents. I'm sure that those parents would understand how MK and I feel that something is missing every day since Ryanne's death. I'm almost sure that they would envy us for having had the amount of time with her that we did along with the fact that we have grown up in a world where it is just expected that your kids will outlive you. That was hardly the case some 160 years ago.
So there you have it. No tricks, no treats, and no celebration of ghouls and goblins. Just another dose of reality from me, Mr Sunshine. I hope you all had a lot of fun with this holiday. Sorry if I was a bit of wet blanket about it but celebrating a night when the dead supposedly walk the Earth really doesn't do anything for me anymore.

Abstract: This talk discusses advanced computationally assisted reasoning about large interaction-dominated systems. Current questions in science, from the biochemical foundations of life to the scale of the world economy, involve details of huge numbers and levels of intricate interactions. Subtle indirect causal connections and vastly extended definitions of system boundaries dominate the immediate future of scientific research. Beyond sheer numbers of details and interactions, the systems are variously layered and structured in ways perhaps best described as networks. Interactions include, and often co-create, these morphological and dynamical features, which can interact in their own right. Such “massively interacting” systems are characterized by, among other things, large amounts of data and branching behaviors. Although the amount of associated data is large, the systems do not even begin to explore their entire phase spaces. Their study is characterized by advanced computational methods. Major methodological revisions seem to be indicated.
Heretofore unavailable and rapidly growing basic source data and increasingly powerful computing resources drive complex system science toward unprecedented detail and scale. There is no obvious reason for this direction in science to change. The cost of acquiring data has historically dominated scientific costs and shaped the research environment in terms of approaches and even questions. In the several years, as the costs of social data, biological data and physical data have plummeted on a per-unit basis and as the volume of data is growing exponentially, the cost drivers for scientific research have clearly shifted from data generation to storage and analytical computation-based methods. The research environment is rapidly being reshaped by this change and, in particular, the social and bio–sciences are revolutionized by it. Moreover, the study of socially– and biologically–coupled systems (e.g., societal infrastructures and infectious disease public health policy analysis) is in flux as computation-based methods begin to greatly expand the scope of traditional problems in revolutionary ways.
How does this situation serve to guide the development of “information portal technology” for complex system science and for decision support? An example of an approach to detailed computational analysis of social and behavioral interaction with physical and infrastructure effects in the immediate aftermath of a devastating disaster will be described in this context.

Art vs. Commerce is a tedious subject, and ultimately the time talking about them as mutually exclusive opposites is better spent doing either one of the two.
Yet Adrian Shaughnessy recently wrote: "Digital may be about to become the new design orthodoxy, but it is ironic that, at the same time, digital groups are demonstrating that it is also possible to create art-based projects that make the answer to the question, 'Can art be design?', an unqualified 'yes'. Well, at least a maybe."
So is there a middle way, can you still think like an artist when by definition you create work to sell a product, for a client and to a budget? And while there are plenty of clients who see beyond their immediate sales targets and know how to build their brand with a more artistic approach, the question remains: Does it actually work?
Looking at their successes and failures from the past 8 years, Hi-ReS! Creative Director Florian Schmitt and Nanika Founder Andreas Müller try to find some answers to this question. Or at least some more questions worth asking.
Hi-ReS! was founded in 1999 by Alexandra Jugovic and Florian Schmitt, both graduates of Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach/Germany, after they moved to London.
With their original work rooted in graphic design, fine art, product design, film and music, they eventually decided to combine all these separate disciplines in one medium and started to experiment with Flash. Their first self-initiated online project, soulbath.com, garnered worldwide attention, culminating in a prominent piece in the New York Times, and led to commercial work. Their global client-base today includes Diesel, Nokia, ABC, SONY, Channel4, Warner Brothers, Playstation, Bacardi, MTV as well as artists such as Beck, Massive Attack and Goldfrapp.
Their first monograph 'Amantes sunt Amentes' is released in October 2007 by renowned German publisher Die Gestalten.
Nanika (Japanese for 'something (else)') was founded in 2005 by Florian Schmitt and Andreas Müller, who had been Rich Media Director at Hi-ReS! since 2000. Apart from Andreas' contributions to various award winning projects while at Hi-ReS!, in 2005 he was awarded the Tokyo Type Directors Club Grand Prix for his piece “For All Seasons”, the first, and so far only interactive piece to receive the Grand Prix.
Nanika was formed with the aim of exploring projects that allow interaction beyond the browser and beyond traditional input and output. Nanika recently completed interactive installations for the Sony-style shop in Omotesando, Tokyo, the Herman Miller showroom in Chicago, Channel 4's headquarters and NOKIA’s first flagship store in Moscow, New York, Chicago, Hong Kong and Helsinki and they continue to develop interactive content for NOKIA flagship stores all over the globe.

Bebe Rexha is beyond excited to be nominated for a Grammy award this year, Best New Artist. However, she’s having some major problems with designers who refuse to dress her for the event.
Their reasoning? She’s “too big.” [insert middle finger here]
Apparently her dress size — 6 or 8 — is too large for top designers to want to put their tag on.
“I’m sorry, I had to get this off my chest,” Bebe shares in the video below. “If you don’t like my fashion style or my music that’s one thing. But don’t say you can’t dress someone that isn’t a runway size.”
For the record, runway models typically wear size 00 – 4, which should not be the expectation for every woman walking the red carpet. To think body image is more important to some designers than talent or character is absolutely not surprising, but it’s infuriating nonetheless.

Mrs. Flores' 5th grade class tried their hand at Breakout. Mrs. Payleitner, Media Specialist at Frederick created three sets of locked boxes that contained clues, puzzles, and mysteries that had to be solved in order to unlock the main box that housed the treasure. Teams had to work together to decipher codes, find clues, and use logic to unlock each aspect of the game. Clues were based on the book Holes by Louis Sachar. Team Blue was the first to open all of the locks and claim their treasure - a Frederick Feather.

On a cloudy, muggy morning, three staff sergeants and one sergeant kicked off the four-day competition for RDECOM Noncommissioned Officer of the Year with the Army Physical Fitness Test.
Twenty Soldiers, led by Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Agueda, gathered at Lauderick Creek Training Site as the four participants began the competition with a land-navigation course through the woods of APG. They had three hours to plot grids and find select points using only a compass, pencil and map.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
When I first drew Daniel being lowered into the lions’ den I decided to draw the opening in the ceiling of a cave, rather than at the side of a cave, reasoning that the lions were less likely to escape that way! Continuing with the logic, the large stone seen in this picture has been rolled across the opening above the den’s aperture, sealing off access to the cave. I have drawn green ribbon crossing the stone and tied to bronze loops on the square den aperture. You can see large blobs of pink/red wax at the intersections of the ribbons, which have been stamped with the royal seal (a metal and wood hand stamp, seen in the king’s hand) and the seals of his nobles (seen in the hands of the nobleman in pink, and the one in green).
The point of stamping the royal and noble seals into wax was to provide a means of determining whether or not the stone had been moved during the night. If someone had wanted to free Daniel they would have had to break the wax seals and removed the green ribbons so that the stone could be moved and Daniel rescued. In this situation the wax seals provided an effective anti-tampering device. The same technique was employed by Pontius Pilate in first century Jerusalem to secure the tomb of Jesus the Christ (see Matthew 27:66)

I appreciate much not only those who have a good eye in what they capture, but also their artistic editing, I'm a poor editor,maybe just a lazy or non inspired one. I'll only edit level of exposure these days. Not to say that won't change, we'll see.That being said, some photos you look at and like them as is...for whatever reason. But then you start thinking, and next thing is you're fiddling...or editing. There's clearly many ways a photograph can look good, but...while reasoning is part of photo taking and editing, emotion, how you feel about a photograph, has the final say in my opinion. Reasoning is certainly part of the process for sure,clearly, in fact its vital. But its also very much so about how I 'feel' about my photo or your photo. I don't care how brilliant your or my photo is technically. If I'm not moved or affected in some way emotionally, I don't care about the technical quality of any photograph. It is at this place where reasoning becomes and must be merely a bystander, whatever role it has played now awaits what the emotional judgement will be about the photo. This is and always will be the final word on a photo. Overplaying reasoning when its role is finished is to move out of what art is ultimately about, an expression of something in us that is beyond reasoning that comes from the heart, the core of what we are. I used to adamantly think I had no artistic anything in me. Then I started noticing things in myself that contradicted that. To learn how to get out of you what you feel in you is interesting, complicated, fun,satisfying,frustrating,perplexing, mystifying,mystical,glorious,hard,easy, joyous, tedious,etc. I find as I'm sure others have too, my life and what I am going thru, have gone thru, and anticipate going thru, both helps and hinders my attempts to get what I feel inside artistically out. Sometimes it feels easy whether you get something good or not, but then just as much it can also not feel easy, even when you feel you have got something that at the very least means something to you if to no one else. It is quite interesting.There is no way to move the difficult or challenging parts of ones life out of the way completely in order to be just free to express without hindrance. That is fantasy and just not how things works. Art must happen in the midst of the good and bad, the easy and the hard. It is simply the way it is. That being said I've fought that useless battle often myself. Anyway, this photo is unedited ( on my part, however Fuji has programmed its camera to do independent in house editing apart from my permission), I was going to do a change in exposure,then I thought,why? The interesting thing my mind goes to here is,who am I doing a photo for,me...or others? The right answer should be:me But the truth is I'm well aware that often it's not for me first I am doing it for but others. I think I understand better than ever why that is a major big time mistake when it comes to art. My conclusion is that I must like my photo,be there few or be there many views. If I don't
like or believe in my photo, then few views will not satify, but will bother me; while at the same time many views will also not satisfy me either, and I would feel strangely bothered in spite of many views. Why? It's simple, the only thing that will satisfy is the art, not the few or many views. if you like your photo,your art, you dont care about the views, instead you care about this wonderful effect the magic of capturing a moment is having on your soul. To heck with views, they are not what art is about. Thats true for me and for anyone else. One thing I like about photographers is their generosity to appreciate the work of others. But another thing I dont like about photographers is their competitive meanness and arrogance. Its not different than life in any other way, To think photography is different is to be naive,sorry to say. All that being as it is, I kinda like photography and other photographers and their work are my personal number one inspiration in my own modest attempt at this art form.

Thoughts tumble, feelings twirl, my mind is in turmoil as I walk at pace and talk out loud to myself like a mumbling buffoon. It's early morning, seven o'clock and fortunately there are few people around to deem me crazy, other than a handful of lycra clad joggers with asses like two small children fighting in a potato sack, and a guy being walked by his Rottweiller against the backdrop of the dramatic shoreline.
It's crazy to think this way, though think it I do, as I stride with purpose, reasoning and cogitating her ever word, spoken from behind those luscious red painted lips that are so adept at seducing me to the very knees of my heart. I should be stronger than this, I should resist and retreat, lick my wounds and count my blessings but I cannot get the thought of her out of my stupid mind. The way that she holds her cigarette until the burning embers await the inevitability of their free-fall towards the ground and oblivion, a moment that plays out like a scene from a classic black and white film in my mind as I dote on her every word, fawn with the best of them, fall victim to her womanly ways and prey to the addiction she creates within my soul.
I come to a standstill beneath the rotting metal struts and ageing wooden rafters of the old nineteenth century pier, and if ever there were a metaphor for my worthless carcass, then I've surely stumbled upon it this morning by chance or circumstance. The reflection in the mill pond water shouts 'old man' and 'fool', as my grey hairs scream like florescent beacons in the early morning light. What the hell am I doing? She's no more than a child, less than half my age, why, I could be her father for God's sake! .
Common sense, a touch of dignity, a little rationalization wouldn't come a miss right now. Away from her I can be sensible, adult, think this mess through and compose myself. A man of my age, a wife and two children, a mortgage and two dogs, my life settled and ordered, happiness and love. But fuck, she's so beautiful! A word, a glance, a flutter of those eyelids and I am putty in her hands as she smiles at my weakness, laughs at my inadequacies and foibles, mocks my animal instinct. Hate me, for I deserve it, slap me, for I'm not worthy, in my heart of heart I know I'm wrong, but God damn it, I'm flesh and blood, I'm a red blooded man, there is a fire burning within that has so seldom been stoked these past years of monotonous fatherhood, tiresome marriage. The shoreline mocks me with tidal surges that kiss my shoes and have me running like a fool to dryer patches. The pier, like me, has seen better days, as my eyes are drawn to the corridor covered by a thin veil of see mist on the horizon where the metal and wood blends as one, and part of me wishes that an ancient and beautiful queen would rise from the water, gracefully floating on a cushion of air towards me as she imparts her words of wisdom on this foolish man's ears. Pull yourself together man,this is Southend on Sea at seven in the morning, not a scene from a David Cronenberg film! I have the desire to walk into the water, follow the light, walk that corridor and see where fate takes me. My life is a mess, my memories candy floss and my hormones sent back in a time machine to my youth in the mid seventies when love was free and responsibility a word not yet fully formed in my personal vocabulary. I walk the beach alone and afraid of myself, uncertain of my future, afraid of what I might become, what I might already have turned into. A monster, a pervert, a leach. It's a rare thing for me to be really mad. The beyond-reasoning-with-me kind of rage that makes a person say things like, "I'm going to tear your fuc*#&$ head off" . In this case, it's actually a nasty, un-neutered cat in my neighborhood whose head I'm after.

Does anyone ever get to see me when I'm this person of flat-out, fuming anger? Rarely. I do my best to contain my frustrations and speak with eloquence when I'm upset. I hope my neighbor will be open to hearing what I have to say and will do something about his cat otherwise he could very well see a crazed woman (like the one we see in today's SP) standing on his front porch.

Blue Beanie Day started in 2007. I don't know the reasoning behind the
choice of the blue beanie as a symbol, but I imagine that
1) the beanie is because beanie are associated with geeks, and geeks
are the ones who most need to know about and support web
accessibility; and
2) blue because blue beanies are really easy to find, and probably
geekier than most of the other colors. Geek camouflage, if you will.
And besides, rainbow beanies are the province of the autism spectrum
disorder support community.
Now, I could very easily be wrong (since I was making up all of the
reasoning) so hopefully Doug or Jeffrey or someone will come by and

I was thinking of the year my son was first diagnosed with Asperger's
and all his sensory issues. We (the school and me) got him his first
computer and taught him the accessibility commands so he could makes
things easy for HIM to read! What a world of difference it made. We
did still have the occasional website where the accessibility commands
he used couldn't change things the way he needed, which really
irritated him, but luckily they were few.

A five-dimensional space is a space with five dimensions. If interpreted physically, that is one more than the usual three spatial dimensions and the fourth dimension of time used in relativistic physics.[1] It is an abstraction which occurs frequently in mathematics, where it is a legitimate construct. In physics and mathematics, a sequence of N numbers can be understood to represent a location in an N-dimensional space. Whether or not the universe is five-dimensional is a topic of debate.
Physics[edit]
Much of the early work on five-dimensional space was in an attempt to develop a theory that unifies the four fundamental interactions in nature: strong and weak nuclear forces, gravity and electromagnetism. German mathematician Theodor Kaluza and Swedish physicist Oskar Klein independently developed the Kaluza–Klein theory in 1921, which used the fifth dimension to unify gravity with electromagnetic force. Although their approaches were later found to be at least partially inaccurate, the concept provided a basis for further research over the past century.[1]
To explain why this dimension would not be directly observable, Klein suggested that the fifth dimension would be rolled up into a tiny, compact loop on the order of 10-33 centimeters.[1] Under his reasoning, he envisioned light as a disturbance caused by rippling in the higher dimension just beyond human perception, similar to how fish in a pond can only see shadows of ripples across the surface of the water caused by raindrops.[2] While not detectable, it would indirectly imply a connection between seemingly unrelated forces. The Kaluza–Klein theory experienced a revival in the 1970s due to the emergence of superstring theory and supergravity: the concept that reality is composed of vibrating strands of energy, a postulate only mathematically viable in ten dimensions or more. Superstring theory then evolved into a more generalized approach known as M-theory. M-theory suggested a potentially observable extra dimension in addition to the ten essential dimensions which would allow for the existence of superstrings. The other 10 dimensions are compacted, or "rolled up", to a size below the subatomic level.[1][2] The Kaluza–Klein theory today is seen as essentially a gauge theory, with the gauge being the circle group.[citation needed]
The fifth dimension is difficult to directly observe, though the Large Hadron Collider provides an opportunity to record indirect evidence of its existence.[1] Physicists theorize that collisions of subatomic particles in turn produce new particles as a result of the collision, including a graviton that escapes from the fourth dimension, or brane, leaking off into a five-dimensional bulk.[3] M-theory would explain the weakness of gravity relative to the other fundamental forces of nature, as can be seen, for example, when using a magnet to lift a pin off a table — the magnet is able to overcome the gravitational pull of the entire earth with ease.[1]
Mathematical approaches were developed in the early 20th century that viewed the fifth dimension as a theoretical construct. These theories make reference to Hilbert space, a concept that postulates an infinite number of mathematical dimensions to allow for a limitless number of quantum states. Einstein, Bergmann and Bargmann later tried to extend the four-dimensional spacetime of general relativity into an extra physical dimension to incorporate electromagnetism, though they were unsuccessful.[1] In their 1938 paper, Einstein and Bergmann were among the first to introduce the modern viewpoint that a four-dimensional theory, which coincides with Einstein-Maxwell theory at long distances, is derived from a five-dimensional theory with complete symmetry in all five dimensions. They suggested that electromagnetism resulted from a gravitational field that is “polarized” in the fifth dimension.[4]
The main novelty of Einstein and Bergmann was to seriously consider the fifth dimension as a physical entity, rather than an excuse to combine the metric tensor and electromagnetic potential. But they then reneged, modifying the theory to break its five-dimensional symmetry. Their reasoning, as suggested by Edward Witten, was that the more symmetric version of the theory predicted the existence of a new long range field, one that was both massless and scalar, which would have required a fundamental modification to Einstein's theory of general relativity.[5] Minkowski space and Maxwell's equations in vacuum can be embedded in a five-dimensional Riemann curvature tensor.[citation needed]
In 1993, the physicist Gerard 't Hooft put forward the holographic principle, which explains that the information about an extra dimension is visible as a curvature in a spacetime with one fewer dimension. For example, holograms are three-dimensional pictures placed on a two-dimensional surface, which gives the image a curvature when the observer moves. Similarly, in general relativity, the fourth dimension is manifested in observable three dimensions as the curvature path of a moving infinitesimal (test) particle. 'T Hooft has speculated that the fifth dimension is really the spacetime fabric.[citation needed]
Five-dimensional geometry[edit]
According to Klein’s definition, "a geometry is the study of the invariant properties of a spacetime, under transformations within itself." Therefore, the geometry of the 5th dimension studies the invariant properties of such space-time, as we move within it, expressed in formal equations.[6]

The 5-simplex of the simplex family, {3,3,3,3}, with 6 vertices, 15 edges, 20 faces (each an equilateral triangle), 15 cells (each a regular tetrahedron), and 6 hypercells (each a 5-cell).
The 5-cube of the hypercube family, {4,3,3,3}, with 32 vertices, 80 edges, 80 faces (each a square), 40 cells (each a cube), and 10 hypercells (each a tesseract).
The 5-orthoplex of the cross polytope family, {3,3,3,4}, with 10 vertices, 40 edges, 80 faces (each a triangle), 80 cells (each a tetrahedron), and 32 hypercells (each a 5-cell).
An important uniform 5-polytope is the 5-demicube, h{4,3,3,3} has half the vertices of the 5-cube (16), bounded by alternating 5-cell and 16-cell hypercells. It and has a doubled symmetry from its symmetric Coxeter diagram. Its 40 vertices represent the kissing number of the lattice and the highest for dimension 5.[8]

While studying historical photographers, I thought it would be interesting to blog about innovative and more recent photographers, such as Erik Johansson. I watched a Ted Talks video of Johansson explaining his reasoning and originality that came from his photography background. What attracted me to his unique work was his technique and use of Photoshop to manipulate his images. I have a passion for photography and digital design; therefor I knew I would love his work. Erik Johansson explains that he believed originally that photography was primarily being “at the right palace at the right time”: luck. He continues to explain that he wanted to take photography to the next level and make the “process start as you press the trigger”, rather than it ending. He aims for a strong level of photo-realism in his work. Johansson takes into consideration lighting, colors, and perspective in order to create the desired illusion and of how we see the world. He experiments with multiple photos having the same type of light, perspective, and photographic defects in order to create a seamless illusion. In this particular image, he explains that this one photo is made up of many different photographs each originally planned out in a sketch. He concludes the presentation by saying, “all the tools are out there and the only thing that limits us is our imagination”. A photograph is able to capture emotions, perspective, expression and more. After watching this video it broadened my perspective on the vast capabilities that photography possesses.
