You'll have to forgive me some brevity tonight. It's been a busy work week and my reservoir of "steam" so to speak is lower than I thought it was when I first thought to sit down for a post. Which is ok, because I don't have much to say about this image anyway.
The most interesting tidbit to share is that this was shot using an expired roll of Fuji Reala. I think the expiration date was 2008-09. But it may have been as old as 2003. Needless to say that in my line of work at the camera store I get asked a lot about film expiration dates. And suffice it to say my advice is generally don't worry about it. In the scope that most photographers ask (as in "oh no this roll of film expired 3 months ago, is it still ok to shoot?") expiration dates matter fairly little. It is not til a roll of film reaches many years, if not decades, that you need to really take considerations. If anything, storage and environment make much more of an impact on the life and health of a roll of film. Your roll's expiration date may be two years in the future, but bake it in a car on a summer afternoon for several hours and it can easily look worse than a roll of film that expired a decade previously but was kept in a cool, dry place.
Of course, you never know for certain when using expired film of unknown origins, so it wasn't like I knew this roll of Reala would turn out as well as it did. I used to really enjoy shooting this film, but that was before Kodak Ektar came along.

Was recently out and about town reminding myself that this is a city of many bridges, several of which even I sometimes take for granted. A good example is the Vista Bridge, aka the Vista Avenue Viaduct. I made this image as I was exploring some of the slightly hidden trails that wind through this area and was glad to find just this right spot to stand where these elements all kind of lined up to make an interesting view of this part of the city. I definitely got some assistance from my Reality So Subtle pinhole camera of course and its skewed way of seeing things. But that is what teamwork is all about.

For me, photography is an emotional endeavor. In my "day life" I am a pretty rational, analytical and logical person.
At least I try to be.
Once upon a time I went to school to become an engineer. Someone who was far more into astrology than I am (not saying much) described me as triple vulcan. I do love to think and analyze things, situations and people. It is not that I am unemotional, I just value analytical and rational thought in such times over emotional thought.
But that changes when I get out into the world with a camera. As I said above, photography is an emotional activity for me. I try to photograph based on feeling rather than reason, emotions as opposed to logic. Sure, some analysis is necessary, I still meter and do the requisite math to calculate the long exposures I am fond of, but I get that work done as quickly as I can and it is only a means to an end. I don't aim to make photos that represent technical achievement or superb rational execution. I like to try to make photos that reflect how I felt in a certain moment and that usually involves photos that contain some sense of the wonder I see and feel about the world when I am out in it as a photographer.
Perhaps that is why I have taken so well to pinhole. Pinhole photography is less about analysis than it is about intuition, it is less about documentation than it is about a slightly ethereal memory of a being somewhere. With pinhole it is easy to dream, and dreams tend to be driven by emotion.
Anyway, the genesis for tonight's reflection came about due to a discussion I was having regarding the supreme court and the difference between looking at the situation rationally versus emotionally. I was arguing the rational perspective, unsurprisingly. Then I sit down at the computer and start editing and looking at images and realized that they showed a very different version of me looking at the world and I found that interesting.
