I sometimes wonder what fall would be like if chlorophyll did not lend its green color to the leaves of trees year round, and instead of a brief window of yellows, oranges, reds, and purples, we had a year of such color. I wonder how long it would take us to grow accustomed to the brilliance of that color. Then I try to imagine a world where the leaves are yellow or red most of the year and turn a brilliant green in the fall and how much different our perceptions might be if what was considered normal became the exceptional. I like such thought experiments. I feel like it helps keep my mind a bit more limber and open, and to help stave off the inevitable "Take it for granted" attitude that can so gradually set in.

Had that itch for a hike in the Gorge the other day. Drove out to do Elowah but the trail to that falls is still closed. Then thought I would double back along the Historic Highway and stop at some of the falls along the way, but that was closed well east of Multnomah and Horsetail Falls. So had to hop back on I-84 only to be reminded that there is no westbound exit for Angel's Rest (and the western portion of the Historic Highway) and there was a line of traffic for the Multnomah Falls parking lot all the way out onto the freeway itself. So after a very circuitous route finally managed to get to the one waterfall it seemed like I was destined to be able to visit. Which was fine, Latourell is a beautiful falls. Figuring I might as well make the effort worth it, I did the hike up to Upper Latourell. I have always enjoyed this passing side view of the Latourell though, so I stopped briefly to make this image. And as is so often the case, a passing hiker was carrying a Pentax ME Super, so I made a new acquaintance while I was making this pinhole image.

Laying in the road with a pinhole camera directly in front of you may not be the best thing to do on busy roads but here in the fens it’s not so bad. Made a darkroom print from the negative.

I really want to go back here. Ever visit a spot and come away feeling a little incomplete, like you left a bit of yourself behind? Yeah, that is me and Colchuck Lake. My mind has already erased the grueling nature of that hike up (at least with all the camera gear) and just remembers that chill air, those still, cold waters, and the magnificent peaks.
