Today's #ResidentofEIU is Madisyn Garner from Assumption, Illinois. Madisyn is a Speech Pathology Major and a Resident Assistant in Weller Hall.

Madisyn (pictured in the center) is a third-generation EIU Panther! She is pictured with her mother, two brothers, and grandmother.

Her brother, Spencer Garner, graduated in 2017 and studied Sports management. Her mother, Kathy Barnes, studied Family Services and graduated in 1994. Her grandmother, Lynne Kaye Bilyeu, studied Elementary Education and graduated in 1967. Her younger brother, Keaton, just moved into Weller Hall to start his college career at EIU!

It seems like Madisyn was a perfect fit for Weller Hall. Her grandmother lived one door down from where Madisyn lives now as an RA.

Outside of her RA position in Weller Hall, Madisyn is extremely involved on campus with EIU NRHH, the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Madisyn does have some advice for legacy students at EIU: "Look for the legacy scholarship that EIU offers because some great benefits can come from being a legacy family. Also to keep the tradition alive and to let people know that your family also went here and people will see just how promising and great of a university this is and if they are looking for somewhere to go to college, they just might consider coming to this amazing university."

When asked why she loves living on campus, Madisyn had this to say: "I love living on campus. It is convenient and it gives me the opportunity to experience the amazing community this university has to offer. If it weren't for the people I'm surrounded by every academic year, I would not have chosen to be an RA and be involved in everything I'm involved in."

We are so proud of Madisyn and all of her incredible accomplishments. She truly is EIU!

Say hello to DreQuan Green, our #ResidentOfEIU for the week!

DreQuan is from Cario, Illinois and is majoring in Computer Science. He is a Senior who is involved with Ford Hall Council. He is also involved with the “Alternative Television and Film Club (Alt-TV)” and works with the Art Department in Doudna.

DreQuan says living on campus and getting involved helped him feel more connected to EIU. “When I first came to EIU my freshman year, I only knew my roommate who I went to high school with. Being on campus allowed me to be updated on events at campus easier, connect with members of the hall, and be involved with my hall council. That has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people and have amazing experiences that helped me grow. Since I am a computer science major, I appreciate the quick and easy access to EIU’s resources to help me complete assignments for class. Also since I live at Ford Hall, it makes getting to work at Doudna a lot easier.”

DreQuan wants to share this advice for #FuturePanthers “Make sure you make time for yourself, both physically and mentally. College can be stressful at times, so make sure you are staying healthy, while of course, keeping up with your school work. A happy and healthy Panther is the one of best kinds of Panther.”

We are proud of DreQuan and all of his great work on campus! Also, this photo of DreQuan is at our Student Leadership Banquet hosted by EIU RHA and EIU NRHH where DreQuan represented Ford Hall when Ford won the Educational Program of the Year Award titled “Don’t “Dis” Their Abilities.” Great work!

It’s #ResidentofEIU!

Cadence is a junior from Cary, Illinois. She is studying elementary education with the early childhood enhancement and hopes to brighten the minds of young children by becoming a 1st or 2nd grade teacher!

Cadence is involved in Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. Last semester, she was in charge of planning the Alumni Breakfast. She also works at the University Court Office as one of their Desk Assistants. “Becoming involved on campus has helped me meet new people and make new friends, and not just people that are in my major. I have friends that are completely different majors from me, and it can be refreshing spending time with them and hearing about their fields. In addition, being involved has helped me step out of my shell.” She also advises #FuturePanthers to get involved as soon as possible, for it allows you further your skills and knowledge for future purposes.

Cadence did not have a hard time deciding to go to #EIU three years ago. It all came down to how excited she got for all the opportunities she could do through Eastern. This made Eastern stand out from other universities. “And I still am happy that I picked EIU, especially since I've met amazing people that have helped me through tough times.”

When asked why she decided to live on campus, this was what Cadence had to say. “Living on campus helped me to make friends with my floor mates, and try new things. it was a great way to meet people freshman year when I didn't know anybody. When I lived in the dorms, I loved being able to just walk down the hall and go to my friends' rooms to hang out. Now that I live at University Court, I love that it gives me an experience of living in an apartment, without everything that comes with living off campus.”

Meet Steven Connor!

Steven is a transfer student from Wheaton, Illinois and majors in Marketing with a minor in Communications!

He currently serves as the Social Media Chair for Ford Hall's Hall Council and is a member of the Eastern Illinois University American Marketing Association. He has previously been a member of the Entrepreneurship Club and did volunteer work for EIU's mobile food pantry. He currently volunteers at the local Ashmore Outreach Care Center.

Steven said, “My involvement on campus has made me a lot more outgoing and has taught me a few skills like organization, promptness, and respect for others. Eventually you're going to have to interact with others on a common goal in the "real world" and doing so earlier can only make that transition easier. Plus, many businesses hire students that are involved in these accredited organizations, so why wouldn't you?”

He likes living on campus because it has allowed him to create many different relationships that he wouldn't have had the chance to create otherwise.

When asked what advice he would give future Panthers he said, “Be true to yourself & attempt to push yourself out your comfort zone. EIU will allow you to see a new aspect of your life through involvement. Many people try to redefine themselves that they truly aren't in college and trying to manage that can be very defeating. I know my first professor made it a mandatory piece of curriculum to get involved in a club of some sort, and even though at first, it was uncomfortable to speak to all these random new people. Making those relationships and feeling like you're a part of something is something I can't stress enough because it can create that feeling of unity.”

Steven, we are so proud to have you as a Panther! You have made EIU a better place & have helped many people along the way.

We are so happy Shannon chose to live on campus - She has been a great asset to housing at EIU!
