This is one of four leaves (Ref 157, 160, 164 and 220) that are all from the same Book of hours.
A calendar leaf for the month of August from a Book of Hours that was produced in Paris c.1480-1490. There are panel borders on the recto and verso of the leaf the recto one of which includes two miniatures.
The "Labour of the Month" is a fine miniature depicting “the threshing of the corn” after the harvest, one of the standard labours of the month for August. It shows a rustic, with long brown hair, dressed in a long sleeved pink smock over a blue sleeved shirt, grey trousers, brown hat and black shoes. He is shown inside a building with a dirt floor, a closed door and a window. He is stood, brandishing a flail over corn laid out on the floor, with a bale of corn stood against the wall under the window. Very effective use is made of liquid gold highlighting.
The miniature is 52mm x 28mm (2 1/10ins. x 1 1/10ins.) in size and is surrounded by a liquid gold frame and outlined in red. Between this miniature and that of the zodiac sign is a decorated liquid gold bar.
The Zodiac sign is a fine miniature depicting “Virgo”, the zodiac sign for the month. Virgo is shown with long, brown, hair wearing a long dark violet dress and holding a large golden palm. She is shown in a landscaped area of pale green and very pale pink with two pale blue streams running through the middle. The landscape rises to distant blue hills, surmounted by two villages, and a paler blue sky. There are several small green or blue bushes.
The miniature is 47mm x 27mm (1 8/10ins. x 1 1/10ins.) in size and is surrounded by a frame in liquid gold and red.
The size of the leaf is 183mm x 127mm (7 2/10ins. x 5ins.).
PROVENANCE: -
The style is typical of manuscript illumination in Paris from the last two decades of the 15th century by the Master of Jacques de Besançon. Whilst the miniatures cannot be firmly attributed to the Master himself, they are certainly by a person within his circle.
GENERAL COMMENTS: -
This is a magnificent leaf with miniatures and illumination of the highest quality and in superb condition, there being no flaking of the paint in either the large initial or the miniatures. There are however two small holes in the vellum that just touch upon the inside bottom corner of the borders.
