While camping along the Strzelecki Track in remote South Australia, we saw a large number of Black Kites (Milvus migrans) soaring above us, as they do while hunting for food. As we watched, an Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) arrived among the kites and began attacking them one by one, pushing them to rise higher and head further north and east. After showing the kites who was boss, the raven descended, flying above our heads and perched in a dead tree several hundred metres away. Given the condition of the tail feathers, I doubt this was the raven's maiden 'dogfight'.
Common ravens (Corvus corax) are one of the most ubiquitous birds on Earth, inhabiting nearly all of the northern hemisphere.
As one of the most clever members of the clever order of corvids, ravens are renown for their intelligence in a number of different cultures. The Navajo/ Diné include them in numerous legends as tricksters. Many of their stories involve both ravens and coyotes, with ravens often getting the best of coyotes, out "clevering" them. The dark color of ravens is thought to represent magic and transformation. Ravens are often bearers of spiritual messages.
This raven was keeping track on all 2 visitors to the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, with the headquarter building behind it.
there are ravens everywhere on the beach today, as lots of things that didn’t survive yesterday’s storm have washed up… nearest to our driveway is a dead eider duck, resulting in big clouds of ravens, but you can see another group of them rather out on the beach (left side of the frame) as well...

Ravens are well without color but one of the smartest birds on the planet with some great feather patterns.

Ravens are the largest of the Corvid family, and extremely intelligent, able to solve problems no other animal species can solve, except for humans. Scavengers, they are known to have called wolves to the site of dead animals in order for the wolves to open the carcasses making it easier for the ravens to feed. At times, they will pretend to cache food to misdirect other ravens from the actual food cache location!
This is just a Raven
So don’t cry craven
He landed on my Table
On top of a black Label
He begged for Food
But was not rude
He took some Crumbs
Right from my Thumbs
Then flew away
Without Delay

This raven joined me when I enjoyed my coffee near the polar bear enclosure.

A family of Little Ravens has been visiting my garden to enjoy one of the birdbaths in many ways: to bathe, to drink, and to dunk bread. This is their offspring drying its feathers.

I was surprised to get this close as they are usually a little nervous around people. I tried to identify it but still not sure. My guess is raven.
Ravens scare people, they always have, they're black and they're big, and all the world has stories about them. They're also remarkably intelligent and playful.
This is Ellie the White-necked raven, originally from East and Southern Africa, who I met at the @syracusezoo yesterday. When I walked up with the camera, she just silently watched me, but then I put the camera down and talked to her, "Hi!", and played "hide and seek" by looking at her from two sides of his enclosure divider, she decided that it was time to play. She turned her head upside down to look at me, so I turned my head around too. She puffed herself up, and opened her wings and squawked at me (for a raven that's more of a "woow" sounding croak) so I repeated it back. We talked for probably ten minutes with her bobbing and dancing on her branch.....
Took a little oxygen last night before dinner and saw this. Sun is going down so early now. We're under a snow fall watch this morning. 20 cm maybe. Based on my minor aches and pains, it feels like a heavy snow. Bring it...

A young Forest Raven protests as a group of pilfering Silver Gulls make another attempt to abscond with it's meal.
Still young and already a big bird. This one was intrerested in my lunch. I knew he (or she) was around, i get daily visits from this intelligent bird, so i brought my camera and telezoom with me. The bird blinked at me ;-)
The Raven at Sunset. It was beautiful there yesterday evening on the Wexford walking trails at The Raven Curracloe.
