Built in 1894-95, this Beaux Arts-style ten-story skyscraper was designed by Edward B. Green and William S. Wicks for Robert G. Dun and Company, a business credit rating agency. The building was the first skyscraper in Buffalo, and was clad in orange-brown buff brick with decorative terra cotta trim, one-over-one windows, decorative brick window trim, decorative surrounds at the first floor entry doors on the Pearl Street facade with transoms featuring roman lattice motif, two-story curtain walls with metal spandrels on the first and second floors of the Pearl Street facade, oxeye windows above the entry doors, a rusticated third floor brick exterior, a series of large arched recessed bays with triple windows topped with arched windows between the fourth and seventh floors on the building’s principal facades, with metal spandrel panels and pilasters, two elliptical oxeye windows on the seventh floor of the Pearl Street facade, flanking the central arched window, multiple small cornices, and a red brick scar left where the cornice at the top of the building was removed in the late 20th Century. The building is listed as a historic landmark by the City of Buffalo, and saw its exterior and common spaces mostly restored in the 1980s, though the cornice remains missing.
Der Frühling kündigt sich an, als 151 058 und 151 043 mit dem Andernacher Stahlzug am Abzw. Tiefenbroich vorbeifahren. Von hier geht es ins romantische Angertal, bekannt von den Kalkzügen mit der Baureihe 221 und 232. Die Doppeltraktion 151 wird mit dem "Andernacher" weiter über die Ratinger Westbahn in Richtung Opladen fahren.
Deze zesasser is een uniek exemplaar. Het onderstel is van de voormalige OHE-Lok 2000 91. Twee Caterpillar-Motoren met een vermogen van 1.672 kW.
Auf dem Ratinger Abschnitt der Linie 712 (heute: U 72) fungiert die Kreisverkehrsgesellschaft Mettmann als Bestellerin des Nahverkehrsangebotes der Rheinbahn. Dies wurde zeitweise auch durch Schilder kenntlich gemacht. Den kleinen Fahrgästen, die jahreszeitlich für den Ausflug zurecht gemacht sind und in Ratingen-Felderhof auf die nächste Bahn in die niederbergische Stadt warten, dürftes dies herzlich egal sein. Derweil eilt NF8U Nr. 3338 in Richtugn Düsseldorf durch die winterlich verzauberte Landschaft.
Ebenfalls am 21.7.23 wurden wegen einer Störung einige Fern- und Regionalverkehre zwischen Düsseldorf und Duisburg spontan über die Ratinger Westbahn umgeleitet. Das Foto vom Velaro Tz 710 „Ansbach“ mit der Wolkenfront, entstand dann wirklich im aller letzten Licht und eigentlich nur zur Dokumentation.

Also on July 21, 2023, due to a disruption, some long-distance and regional services between Düsseldorf and Duisburg were spontaneously redirected via the Ratinger Westbahn. The photo of the Velaro Tz 710 “Ansbach” with the cloud front was actually taken in the last light and actually only for documentation.

Wachtend in de late middagzon op toestemming, om even verder linksaf richting Flandersbach te mogen vertrekken, voor een nieuwe lading kalk.
Met een lading lange rails (waarschijnlijk van het Voestalpine depot In Duisburg Entenfang), richting Düsseldorf. De trein moet hier net als alle anderen even later stoppen voor het signaal bij de overweg. Waren problemen en steeds pas na 5-10 minuten ging de overweg dicht en kon de trein vertrekken.

Met een lading nieuwe kalk uit Flandersbach richting de hoogovens van ThysenKrupp in Duisburg. Door de open wascosa wagens stuift het flink. Zo'n laagje kalk is goed voor veel planten langs het spoor, die het dan ook vaak opvallend goed doen, zoals de Buddleja (vlinderstuik) en de bramenstruiken.
Op een vroege ochtend rijdt Beacon Rail 185 596 door Lintorf met VTG Ketels beladen met stookolie, richting Duisburg.

Op de lijn tussen Duisburg en Düsseldorf kan wel vaker een rariteit langs komen wat je niet echt verwacht dan. In dit geval was het een kleine eenling die er passeerde , in de ochtend had deze Schienenbus 798 752 en Köf dieseltje ergens heen gebracht en is dan in de middag retour gereden. Waar de schienenbus de Köf heen heeft gebracht is mij niet bekend verder. De Schienenbus 798 752 is dan hier op de retour weg waar hij de 3 Nederlandse fotografen passeert in Ratingen naar de richting van Düsseldorf. Waar deze oude gediende verder naar toe ging is me verder ook onbekend gebleven.
Thyssenkrupp rijden veel door het Ruhrgebied met hun eigen locs. Bij Lintorf zien we 543 met Tadns vorr kalk vervoer.

I've more or less finished my first piece for the paper (as mentioned previously, I've decided to pull back from flickr and photography while I concentrate more on writing), so am taking a brief break from writing to process a photo from my winter trip to the Southwest. Kind of at random, this photo popped up as I was searching through the possibilities.
The title, BTW, comes from a silly Jerry Lewis movie from the sixties, essentially turning "Cinderella" into a male character.
For anyone interested, what I've written over the past few days follows. I wish I could have inserted more specific examples to back my assertions, but space simply would not allow it. I have not titled it as the newspaper usually does that.
A recent poll found that 45% of Americans still approve of President Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. This leads one to ask, if his actions were so exemplary, how is it that in spite of the fact we knew weeks in advance that this terrible disease was coming—a luxury China did not have—we now have almost four times as many cases as any other country, with more deaths—soon to be many more? If his response was worthy of approval, how is it that the outcome of that response is presently far, far worse than in any other country in the world? China, in spite of not having any warning, now has the disease under a measure of control, as does South Korea. We had a month to prepare and did virtually nothing.
For weeks, Trump ignored the intelligence community's dire warnings, consistently downplayed the seriousness of what we were facing and did nothing to bolster our preparedness. Trump's nonstop minimizing of the problem (“It's very mild” “It's going to disappear . . . like a miracle”) and misinformation (“Anyone who wants a test can get a test”) dissuaded many from taking the situation seriously, but it was the inexcusable failure to act that was the gravest problem. The single positive action taken by the President before the pandemic began to spread like wildfire was closing off travel from China—but even that was handled incompetently as there was no systematic effort to screen or quarantine the thousands of American citizens returning from that country.
Unfortunately, this administration continues to demonstrate incompetence every single day. And everyday, though his messaging of late has cleaved closer to reality, Trump continues to give out false and misleading information, all the while bragging about his ratings and patting himself on the back for his miserable performance. And as for responsibility for failures?—“I don't take any responsibility at all”—because of course he doesn't.
Except he is the president of the United States. He is responsible—responsible for the criminally bad mismanagement, the chaos, the abysmally slow response and the numerous failures. Yes, there are others who can share some of the blame, but the buck stops at his desk. Tens of thousands are going to die that shouldn't have. He is responsible for that which makes him guilty of nothing less than negligent homicide—10,000 times over.
And now we know the consequences of electing someone who is unqualified by every conceivable metric to the most important office on Earth. Perhaps one hard-earned positive will emerge from this disaster—that in the future, we will approach our right to vote not as an exercise in expressing frustration, but as a sacred duty--a duty to ferret out the candidate most dedicated to the advancement of our nation and all humanity . . . not merely themselves.
151 126-0 (DB) heads towards Ratingen Lintorf with EZ 51542 Oberhausen Osterfeld Mitte - Gremberg (+14).
The consist is DB Samms (steel sheets), DB Habbillns vans, DB Rs flats (aluminium blocks), empty CFL Reps steel flats, VTG Uacs (UN 3077), DB Eaos box wagons, CZ-CDC & SBB Res, DB Falns, DB Sns (black small diameter pipes) & various tanks including GATX Zacs (UN 1993)
Deze locs kwamen vanaf 1966 in dienst als V90 (1964/65 voorserie). Ze worden dan ook de komende jaren vervangen.
De huidige BR 294 kreeg wel een nieuwe motor en ook afstandsbediening: Ab 1995 wurden in großer Zahl Lokomotiven der Baureihe 290 mit einer anderen Art Funkfernsteuerung von Krauss-Maffei (KM) ausgerüstet. Bei ihr kann der nun „Lokrangierführer“ (Lrf) genannte Lokführer die Lok über ein um den Oberkörper gehängtes, vor dem Bauch getragenes Fernsteuerbediengerät (FBG) bedienen. Dies ermöglichte die Einsparung von Rangierpersonal und wurde zuvor schon bei den kleineren Rangierloks der Baureihen V 60 und Köf III angewandt. Die so umgebauten Loks der Baureihe 290 werden ab Umbau als Baureihe 294 bezeichnet.

"I did what is now called the multi-engine rating on one in the early 1950s. Like most Miles aircraft, the Gemini was quite nice to fly but it was no Twin Comanche! I can't remember all the figures but with the Cirrus Minor engines of 90 hp each (some later production airframes were fitted with Gipsy Major 10s having 145hp), performance was less than electrifying and often bordered on the marginal at MTOW which was around 3,000 lb. You had to keep your wits about you. Even at the time, there was a silly joke about not noticing an engine failure on take-off as 90 hp was so little it wouldn't be missed.
Cruising speed was a reasonable 115 kt or thereabouts and the range was exceptional for those days - over 900 miles if you could lean the mixture a bit. With the short nose, (the integral landing light was considered rather sexy) cockpit visibility was excellent but forward vision in rain was somewhat impaired without the prop there to blow the stuff away. This left the side windows a bit obscured which was a pain as you needed to be able to see out to read the fuel gauges mounted on top of the wings. Tanks were behind the wheel well and engine; all in what at the time was a very swish, streamlined nacelle. It now looks rather quaint but was effective in reducing cabin noise which was quite low.
The main gear went up/down on an hydraulic system and it was a real feat to pump the gear up whilst maintaining a steady climb; a bit like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time if you know what I mean, so you had to pay attention to the throttle friction nuts. A go-around was a nightmare! The rudders were unusually powerful and often could be used to counter an incipient ground loop without use of brakes. Oh! I could ramble on for hours... If you are able to wangle a ride in one, go for it!
A very interesting aircraft by today's standards but I should be very wary of buying one. The wood framing with plywood covering was light and worked well in 1947 but I imagine that present maintenance costs would be stratospheric. Spares would be a nightmare, particularly in the case of the Blackburn engine and when I was tempted to take the plunge with one going cheap at Rochester in the 1960s, there was some suspicion attached to the quality of horses used to make the glue....
