We were very pleased to have found this species. H. parclitella differs from other members of the Homaloptera ocellata group in possessing only 2 large saddle blotches on the body, 1 posterior to head, 1 covering dorsal fin base (saddle blotches posterior to head and below dorsal fin maybe continuous on flank), rarely with 1 saddle blotch between dorsal fin and caudal fin; base of caudal dark; 5 simple, 12-13 branched pectoral fin rays; 75-77 lateral line scales.

Coregonus lavaretus, known as the Powan in Scotland is one of the rarest Scottish freshwater fish. According to Scottish Natural Heritage, natural populations occur in only two lochs, Loch Lomond and Loch Eck. fish from these populations have been transplanted to other lochs in order to establish populations as part of a conservation effort. the Powan is under threat from the Ruffe, an invasive species which eats Powan eggs. the Powan is on the IUCN red list of threatened species and is a protected species under British law.

Went down to Rosemarkie beach yesterday to catch a shot of the sunrise and ended up encountering this rare sunfish. Contacted Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme and they uplifted the fish. They confirmed that they would carry out an examination to determine the cause of death. Then the fish would be handed over to the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh. They estimated the weight to be 100kg.
