The painted stork is a colorful, large waterbird found in marshlands. Recognized by pink tints on the wings and back and a finely checkered panel on the inner wing. It nests colonially in trees, often along with other waterbirds. The birds remain close to their breeding ground and do not migrate much. Their diet consists of fish, frogs, snails, crustaceans, snakes, lizards, young turtles, crocodile hatchlings, hatchlings of large lizards, insects, etc. Bare forehead helps the stork to dig deep into mud without fouling any feathers.

A.k.a. Marsh Crocodile

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is known for attracting migratory and resident birds. I was waiting near these rocks for some storks to land and was nearly dozing off due to the warm weather. After I came out of my slomber, I was surprised to see this crocodile instead, getting comfortable on the rocks!

Left: Asian Openbill, Anastomus oscitans. The stork is whiter than the spoonbill. Wide gap between upper and lower mandibles and pink legs are characteristics.

Right: Eurasian Spoonbill, Platalea leucorodia. The multicolored neck and the yellow breast patch of breeding plumage show up nicely in this pose.

Captured from a rowing boat. Luckily both birds were in the same focal plane.

Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, KA, India..

Taken at Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Srirangapatna..

Equipment used: Nikon D90, Nikkor AF-S VR 70-300mm lens, handheld, continuous frame advance

Other data: Aperture priority @ f/8, Auto ISO - ISO 360, Shutter speed 1/800 sec, focal length 230mm, exposure composition EV -0.7

This was the next photograph after the “As I swoop down” image. Since the camera was about doing about 4 fps this must have been around ¼ of a sec later. By then the pelican had moved closer so I should have zoomed out a bit but didn’t unfortunately. Hence, the wing got clipped a bit but I managed to capture the beak as it skimmed the water. Should have been a great photo without the wing clipped but then I am no Arthur Morris!

I think the D90 + 70-300 though being a consumer body + lens combo tracked the subject admirably well! I am convinced this combo can take much better images than what I am capable of!

Many a holy river and not so holy ones have Shiva statues built in the waterways. Haridwar has one on the Ganges and further down that holy river you spot occasional concrete iconographic visages of Shiva with his Trident, damroo, snake, yoga danda and matted hair.

This particular piece of masonry and paint work is not the most aesthetic in figurative terms and it would appear that the artist ran short of concrete to give Shiva atrophied arms and stunted legs. Maybe too much on the neck did that. The depiction of a lady, Ganga, ensconced in the matted strands of hair is unique here. So is the motorcycle, but then that is the framing :)

Cauvery river has been a hot bed of disputes between Karnataka and Tamilnadu states in India over sharing of waters. Not such a holy way to share water with riots just a few weeks ago. More will happen in the short term as the rains in the catchment areas of the river have been poor and sharing becomes acute. Let us wait and see how that flows out.

This was shot near the entrance to the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary near Mysore.
