The Adelaide-Melbourne main line takes a path through the Belair National Park. This is one of several tunnels in the park.
I'm very pleased with this "posed" shot. I waited patiently as this rail walked between one side of the marsh and the other over this cement barrier.
counted 5 chicks, so mom and dad were busy through the marsh collecting food for the tiny fledglings....Virginia rail

At long last, I can cross another lifer off the list! Thrilled to see this buff banded rail briefly appearing from the tussocks of grass very near our accommodation in the caravan park at Halls Gap. It was very dull, hence the high ISO, but happy to get any shot of these good looking birds. They are not exactly a rare bird. I have just never found myself in the right place at the right time.
he water rail (Rallus aquaticus) is a bird of the rail family which breeds in well-vegetated wetlands across Europe, Asia and North Africa. Northern and eastern populations are migratory, but this species is a permanent resident in the warmer parts of its breeding range. (wikipedia)
After looking at a rare (for us) Elegent Tern at Surfside I decided to spend some time around the salt marshes on Surfside, TX and came across this Clapper Rail who was hunting Fiddler Crabs. During his hunt he walked so close to me that I needed to use my 100-400mm lens to be able to fit his whole body in the photo. It is such a neat feeling when a bird will carry on with its daily activities seemingly unaffected by our presence.

This looks like a Virginia or a clapper Rail (?). They remind me of a chicken but that is not to say they aren't a wonderful bird. They have very interesting color and they communicate with multiple sounds. They don't seem to be seen a lot. At least not locally. Taken in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve
