I saw A LOT of RS series diesels this trip and today we'll look at a sampling starting with this fine example at the Railroad Museum of New England's yard in Thomaston Connecticut. This operation is more formally known by their operating branch's name, the Naugatuck Railroad. Thanks Orion!

I remember a magazine article from 40 years ago referring to the state of New York as the Alco Empire. A quick search and it was Railfan & Railroad's March 1982 issue. I probably ran across it in or around 1998 as part of one of the massive boxes of back issues I bought at train shows around the Hudson Valley. I still have many of those back issues in my library.

As has been documented amazingly little has changed. New York is still ground zero for Alco power. Although some roads can be grouped together via family affiliation (LAL & GVT roads) there are still at least 12 Alco operators in the state I can think of off the top of my head. Only one is a recent convert though, the Arcade & Attica.

This RS3 has spent the majority of it's life in New York. Born as a D&H locomotive, famous for it's run in bicentennial paint that lasted long into it's tourist hauling days on the Tioga Central and then painted into the NKP gloss black of the Blabey system before being sold to the Arcade & Attica last year to replace the use of their iconic orange centercabs in freight service.

Seen here the now ARA 114 is switching the sole freight customer at North Java.

Burlington Northern Railroad Class ARS-3 4056 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in January 1952 as SP&S 71 (c/n 79594), retired in April 1980. Alco's internal model designation was E1662, Alco's marketing people called it RS-3, and BN stencilled the frame ARS-3.

A comment from S. L. Dixon offers the following: That white stuff all over the walkways and the top is Mount Saint Helen's ash, which blew on May 18, 1980, and Vancouver Washington, and Portland, Oregon, got hit with some serious ashfall.

Burlington Northern Railroad Class ARS-3 4056 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1952 as Spokane Portland & Seattle 71 (c/n 79594), it became BN 4056 and was retired in April 1980. This shows evidence of a water-cooled turbocharger.

Beginning in 1953, the trouble prone GE RD-1 air-cooled turbocharger (which GE developed during WWII for P38 aircraft) was replaced by a water-cooled GE RD-3 turbocharger, and in 1954 by Alco's own design, the Model 510. The water-cooled turbocharger was mounted with the cylindrical casing facing the free end of the prime mover. The RD-1 was mounted oriented lengthwise. The external difference was in the exhaust stack. The air cooled turbo stack was oriented lengthwise to the hood, the water-cooled turbo stack was mounted crosswise to the hood, as seen here. Many RS3's were retrofitted with the water cooled turbocharger during their operational lives.

After over two and a half decades of local and mainline service in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, CNJ RS3 1541 has been banished to Conrail's Altoona dead line. The Alco will be given a reprieve via the DeWitt Geep program, emerging from Juniata shops as Conrail RS3m 9909 a year and a half after this photo was taken.

A early arriving 911 at Sault Ste. Marie Ont had 8428 trailing a GP35 and C424. Apparently no one wanted to lead on 912 with an RS3 so the old Alco has already been repositioned to trail again when 912 heads out a little after midnight.
