We'll go from orange leader on the 'sabber to orange leader at a more populated location, the beautiful hamlet of Cambridge, NY.

Last fall Mr. Twombly and I made out like bandits following a full round trip on the Battenkill. The southbound spent time playing with clouds but as usual with a ten mph train it was possible to find gaps. I think the next day was 2102 in the rain at Tamaqua Tunnel. In fact this was part of the epic 46 hour run I've brought up a couple times.

Also, this was the time they took a while to leave the banana and the six axle flat behind in the woods so I strolled up the street to an antique shop looking for lanterns. I walked out and the gates were already going down so I had to make an ass outta myself to get back in position for this shot. Worth it.

Penn Central two RS3 (5351-5228) in CNR yard. I would guess that these two represent the New York Central's once very busy presence across the Niagara Peninsula, cutting a double track swath from Detroit to Buffalo. By this time, that presence was fading fast.

Peabody Coal Company RS3-467 has seen better days, but that will change for the better. Here, its been pushed off the track in the middle of a corn field. It was built in May of 1952 as Reading RS3-467. You can tell it was Reading by the drip strip above the cab window. Rich Jahn and company went to Peabody to rescue it. Rich says "In getting it back on the track they did serious damage to the truck by torching off all the brake hangers and pull rods. Anthracite Railroad Historical Society volunteers spent three hot days in their shop replacing all that they had torched!" Today, it has been restored to its Reading livery and is on display at Steamtown in Scranton, PA.

The lead unit of this northbound Delaware & Hudson train began life as D&H RS3 4122. Although it still carries a lot of its RS3 lines, D&H 505 was outshopped in 1975 by Morrison-Knudsen as a significantly different locomotive. With a 2000 horsepower 251 prime mover and electrical components replacing the original 1600 hp 244, an upgraded air system, and a chopped nose, railfans called this class RS3m’s or RS3u’s, but redesigner and rebuilder M-K termed the rebuilds as TE56-4A, and the units carried M-K builder plates with that designation. .

A three builder lashup of diesels is not an everyday occurrence, but four builders is a truly rare instance. If one can accept that the 505 is no longer the Alco that it once was, and is now a product of Morrison-Knudsen, this consist of the MK, an Alco C420, and EMD GP38-2, and two GE U23B’s has rarified air passing through its intakes.

I remember a magazine article from 40 years ago referring to the state of New York as the Alco Empire. A quick search and it was Railfan & Railroad's March 1982 issue. I probably ran across it in or around 1998 as part of one of the massive boxes of back issues I bought at train shows around the Hudson Valley. I still have many of those back issues in my library.

As has been documented amazingly little has changed. New York is still ground zero for Alco power. Although some roads can be grouped together via family affiliation (LAL & GVT roads) there are still at least 12 Alco operators in the state I can think of off the top of my head. Only one is a recent convert though, the Arcade & Attica.

This RS3 has spent the majority of it's life in New York. Born as a D&H locomotive, famous for it's run in bicentennial paint that lasted long into it's tourist hauling days on the Tioga Central and then painted into the NKP gloss black of the Blabey system before being sold to the Arcade & Attica last year to replace the use of their iconic orange centercabs in freight service.

After running lite to interchange the now ARA 114 is on the outskirts of the village of Arcade traversing trackage that doesn't serve tourists. Thanks Otto!

Between weekday work train duties on the former New Haven shore line, an Amtrak RS3 spends the weekend next to the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. The view is from the Fishers Island ferry slip.

New Haven was the maintenance base for many of Amtrak’s RS3’s. Here three of them idle in front of the former NYNH&H shops.

Business looks good for the Erie Western as the 1603 gets a train ready to take north out of the yard at Griffith. Just not good enough, as the ERES would not last much longer. Really a shame, as this railroad had great plans and style. But you always need that third item, money. I hope John Eagan's book on the Erie Western will be out soon; we need more ERES.

An RS3, an empty hopper and a classic depot. The Batten Kill Cambridge NY.

Operating on a tip from a friend of Otto's (Klingel?, anywho thank you very much!) and confirmation from Charlie Wood (thanks again dude!) Otto found out that the B&P's interchange run to the A&A was a day behind so we woke up early in the morning and worked our way over hill n' dale to Arcade NY.

Now, on the surface an RS3 might sound like a great photographic improvement over centercab GEs but man that orange paint goes a long way! Numbered sequentially behind the centercabs ARA 114 is the former WNYP 406, acquired by the LA&L system from the Tioga Central sometime in 2014. If you don't recognize her yet she's famous! This was the D&H bicentennial RS3 1976 after being rebuilt from D&H 4112.

To the point, iirc Wednesday is the day to get the freight on the A&A unless the BP runs late. We got to Arcade around 0800 and the 114 was out of the engine house within a few minutes and heading to interchange at Arcade Junction. With limited track space to use at the junction they come back into Arcade and build their train using a siding track a few blocks from downtown before turning the corner and heading for the mill while passing their engine house and a couple downtown scenes including this one lensed from the bed of my truck as the train begins to cross Cattaraugus Creek. The train in the backgound is 44 tonner 110 with the display train on disconnected track with a staircase to let people explore the cab and a Semaphore as well. The parking lot was filled to the brim and there's another parking lot hidden behind 114 that was also filled when I visited the A&A last October on a pumpkin train weekend.

The other charter of the spring trip wasn't my own but a Dynamo Productions event at the Arcade & Attica featuring their recently reactivated steam locomotive No. 18 spun to face south instead of it's usual north and working freight for part of the day. In the morning the chase train was RS3m 114 (the former D&H bicentennial unit) and the A&A coaches which more or less hauled attendees around a couple square miles of Arcade.

I managed to finish my EL RS3 yesterday, with a little help from Santa ;-)
